CES 2009 Press Conference: Sony live blog

by Adam Berger on Jan 7, 2009 at 06:45 PM

Like always Sony has made us trek all the way over to the convention center for their press conference. We are expecting the regular announcements LCD TVs, new OLED displays, cameras, new computers include the teased P series, new Blu-ray players and more. The one catch will be that Howard Stronger, Sony CEO, will be offering a keynote tomorrow morning and will surely save something for that time—so this can end up being a bit dry. Either way stick around to this page for live coverage of all the announcements (you can reload the page by hitting Ctrl+R or F5).

CES 2009 Press Conference: Samsung live blog

by Adam Berger on Jan 7, 2009 at 04:45 PM

How Samsung can fit all of their announcements into a 45 minutes press conference is amazing. If this is like previous years Samsung will be announcing new products across all categories: HDTVs, phones, cameras, camcorders, monitors, printers, portable audio, and maybe even some portable devices/netbooks to replace the Q1 line (maybe the rumored NC20).

We will get started in just a few minutes. Once the live blog starts you can refresh every minute or so by hitting F5 or Ctrl+R.

Netgear launches 3G Mobile Broadband Wireless Router

by Doug Berger on Jan 7, 2009 at 03:23 PM

At today’s Netgear press conference at CES 2009, the company introduced their new 3G Mobile Broadband Wireless Router to complement their other networking products.  The device connects to the internet using your existing mobile broadband card, and allows you to transmit the signal via Wifi so others can join in on the internet fun.  I’m sure the mobile carriers are having a field-day with this.  Check out the details from the product’s data sheet below.

BlackBerry Curve 8900 lands on T-Mobile USA

by Arnold Zafra on Jan 7, 2009 at 08:20 AM

BlackBerry Curve 8900 on T-Mobile

T-Mobile has snagged the BlackBerry Curve 8900 and it will be available in February.  This BlackBerry is the “thinnest and lightest full-QWERTY BlackBerry Smartphone.“  Who wouldn’t want to have this baby with its built-in GPS and support for location-based service?

The specs show a 3.2 megapixel camera which has image stabilization, digital zoom, flash and video recording features.  You can also use the Curve 8900 as a media player since it comes with a 3.5-mm stereo headset jack aside from its standard headset and support for microSD/SDHC memory cards up to 16GB.

Logic Wireless to show off cell phone with built-in projector at CES

Logic Wireless to show off cell phone with built-in projector at CES

T-Mobile and Logic Wireless are getting ready to roll out the Logic Bolt, which is what at first glance appears to be an overall basic looking candybar style handset, however the Bolt also includes a built-in projector.  According to the release, the Bolt will be the “World’s First Projector Phone.“  The projector will offer a 640 x 480 VGA resolution and can cast the image anywhere from 36 to 64-inches.  Using the projector, it was mentioned that you can expect a battery life of “more than 2 hours.“

Aside from the projector, the Bolt also features a touchscreen 2.4-inch QVGA display with a resolution of 240 x 320, 3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, GPS as well as QUAD band GSM/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900 coverage.

The Logic Bolt will retail for $100 along with a two-year agreement, or $600 contract free. No word yet on availability. Of course, the biggest question for me is, just which market this is expected to fill. It does not seem like it will win the hearts of Blackberry business users, and it may be more than your average home user would really need.

Motorola intros their first touchscreen phone

by JG Mason on Jan 6, 2009 at 08:02 PM

Motosurf new touchscreen phone from motoMotorola let three phones creep out this morning, one of which is a snazzy looking touchscreen phone.  I’ve been chastising Moto for their slow phone development, especially when it comes to replacing the RAZR with something worthy.  The three phones released today, while interesting, lead me to believe the companies troubles won’t be solved any time soon.

The MotoSurf A3100 looks like an interesting phone.  Featuring support for a 32GB SD card, two cameras, a skin GUI over Windows 6.1 (suggesting Windows Mobile 7 is a ways off still), a 2.8” display, a-GPS and good looks.  So what leads me to believe this won’t be the company’s standard bearer?

Wireless USB coming to Linux

by Shawn Ingram on Jan 6, 2009 at 11:08 AM

USB is possibly the most popular connection out there.  Though current models aren’t as fast as Firewire 800, almost every device supports USB in some form.  The main problem with USB, though is all the wires it uses.  Sure, one USB wire isn’t so bad, but when you start getting multiple cables they start getting more then a bit annoying.  Until now cutting those cables has been possible, but not in most devices.  Jungo and Wisair are working together to bring Wireless USB to Linux and Linux-embedded devices.

HTC unveils the S743 WinMo slider phone with full QWERTY keyboard

by Arnold Zafra on Jan 6, 2009 at 08:01 AM

HTC S743 Smartphone

HTC doesn’t want to be left behind in the CES 2009 frenzy and so the company is announcing the new HTC S743 slider phone featuring a 12-key keypad and a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard.  Upon seeing the S743, loyal fans and users of HTC mobile phones would immediately notice the S743’s striking resemblance to the previously released Touch Diamond phone.  Well, that’s because both phones sport what HTC calls as a “faceted design.“
