  • RE: Verizon Wireless rumored release schedule for 2009, early 2010 [Gadgetell]
Without a WebOS phone product, it just may be the push I need to leave Verizon.
  • RE: Gadgetell Guide: Should I buy headphones or earbuds? [Gadgetell]
Personally, I believe that such generalities do a disservice to your readership. There is no way that blanket statements like headsets sound better than earbuds has any merit at all. There are a wide range of quality in both camps and they each have a unique place. As a long time audiophile, I use a pair of electrostatic headphones at home. The accuracy of these are unsurpassed, but they don't make any sense for portable electronics. When I travel on planes, I use a pair of high-end noise-isolating earbuds. These allow me to remove myself completely from my surroundings, but I need to read lips to have a conversation with them on. When I look for headphones or earbuds, I have three criteria: 1) Does the music sound natural? The equalization that manufactures think makes things sound better (i.e boosting the low or mid range) colors that sound. 2) Is it comfortable? Earbuds can irritate and hurt after a while. Headphones may not sit right and can get very hot and sweaty. 3) What's the fatigue factor? (1) and (2) contribute to this, but even headphones that are comfortable and sound great may have a characteristic that makes it hard to listen for long periods of time. I do the same type of test for any audio component and it has served me well over the years. The best thing to do is to have a few diverse tracks that you utilize for subjective listening tests. Always use the same equipment for these tests and try to equalize the volume when comparing. It solves problems like "but it sounded great at the store". If a friend bought a pair that you are interested in, see how it sounds on your playing device. There is a lot of interplay between the driving electronics and the headphones that will change the sound characteristics. Since many manufacturers forgo providing any meaningful specifications any more, subjective analysis is the only way.
  • RE: Gadgetell Giveaway: Father’s Day prize package [Gadgetell]
I owe my dad a lot. He owned and ran a electrical supply and lighting showroom and that's where I grew up. As a youngster I built forts using boxes of romex, assembled and hung thousands of chandeliers, and we eventually ran it together before I went off on my own career. He was an ethusiastic supporter of what I wanted and was always building or fixing things. He's not around anymore, but I'd like to instill the same values to my son.
  • RE: Microsoft could be launching phone and buying major tech company [Gadgetell]
Thanks for the reply... This is a much better position than the original. I stand corrected and agree that I might have over-reacted. Probably due to the recent sloppy "news" reporting on the smartphone and ebook fronts that's got my dander up. I'm not a fan of MS. My machines that run Windows are dwindling. That said, I believe that MS has the ability to produce superior products if they would just stop and think. They have put together an incredible collection of brainpower and cash. Working for various research firms, I've seen them grab the cream of the crop over the years. I see the main issue to be their obsession with control rather than innovation. Every now and then I see some real genius pop out among the crud. Then again, I'm not a big fan of Palm because they squandered away a lot of good will and opportunity over the years. However, the Pre has definitely peaked my interest and actually matches my concept of what is important to be in a smart phone. MS should take a lesson from this since it was a very bold step for Palm to abandon the PalmOS for a new concept. On one hand, Palm admits that they didn't have the ability to deliver the promised fixes to PalmOS. On the other hand, admitting it allowed them to move beyond it. If nothing else, Apple has spurred the smartphone industry into action and I love the recent innovations. I guess I'll just have to wade through the rumors and speculation until the dust settles. It makes for exciting and frustrating times.
  • RE: Microsoft could be launching phone and buying major tech company [Gadgetell]
My take is that this is just another wild speculation from a journalist that should know better than spread rumors. There is way too much of this on the net already. I'd really like to get hard facts instead. The twitter account is already exposed as a fake. As for MS taking over Palm... Anything is a possibility, but can you imagine the bad PR? It would be MS admitting that their Windows Mobile OS is an inferior product to WebOS. There is also too much overlap in resources in this area between the two companies so any merger/buyout would create internal mayhem.
  • RE: Web IM service is now open to Hotmail users [Gadgetell]
And this is news? AIM Express has been available for many years and has been a staple product for me when I had to use someone else's computer when I travel. MS is pretty slow to catch up.
  • RE: Gadgetell Giveaway: The Hava Gold [Gadgetell]
Cool, something else to do instead of work on my computer... I'm in.
  • RE: Sun of IBM? IBM in talks to acquire Sun [Gadgetell]
I guess we'll all just have to wait and see what happens. I don't see how IBM can really fit Sparc or other key technologies into their business plans. The worst case scenario would be like what GE did to RCA. Take NBS and then sell off or shut down everything else... the end of a legacy. I'd hate to see OpenSolaris lose momentum now.
  • RE: Blogger fight: Respond to the Pre or face becoming Motorola, Apple [Gadgetell]
Why multi-tasking? Talk to PalmOS users. Push email is near impossible without it. Chatteremail pushed the limit of the PalmOS with background email fetching, but even that was a bit clunky, and it would get the palm into a funky state which needing a reboot too often. So, if you want to receive notifications from RSS, or twitter, etc. in the background, you need to be able to multi-task. Otherwise it means that you have to continually switch between applications to retrieve them individually. That said, I'm sure that Apple is actually using multi-tasking already, but they just haven't opened it up to developers. The main reason is that background processing can sap the life out of your battery quick unless it is properly throttled.
  • RE: Blogger fight: Respond to the Pre or face becoming Motorola, Apple [Gadgetell]
Personally, I hope Palm get's the Pre right from the start. It's the first Palm product that peaked my interest in a long time. Not enough to switch to Sprint since there is a half-mile radius Sprint "roaming" area around my home. But they have to fight a lot of political and technological mistakes in their past plus produce something much more reliable than many of their products. That said, I'm still using a palmOS Treo because it still works best in my daily usage, but rooting for the Pre.
  • RE: Gadgetell Giveaway: Philips RC9800i universal remote [Gadgetell]
This is one cool device. Thanks for the giveaway chance.
  • RE: Gadgetell Holiday Giveaway: Palm Centro [Gadgetell]
I'd love to have this to replace my aging 700p. I've been a loyal palm phone user since the flaky 270 (clamshell). I could offer a nice comparison on this vs. my current phone.
