When I was old enough to sit up on my own, my dad would give me the controller to play with, and I suppose that’s where my love for video games all began. - Hi Nicholas: In short - no. It's a direct port, so everything is pretty much exactly the same. There are a few additional loading periods from the original and the control scheme is slightly different, but other than that, the same. I didn't really hold the cheap scares against it because that is very much in line with the whole B-movie thing (and one of my favorite horror series, Fatal Frame, is occasionally guilty of the same thing), but they are still there. The multiplayer is also less scary, but I found more because of the lag than the patterns. Since things can move slower with a second person, you lose some of the suspense and shock value. If someone hasn't played Obscure: The Aftermath before, and could perhaps get it on sale or used, I'd probably recommend the PSP version though - Hydravision and Playlogic did a good job with the port. But it's still pretty much the exact same game.
- RE: Gamertell Review: Dawn's Light for PC [Gamertell]I think it'd be nice to see an old-school homage RPG on WiiWare. As much as I liked Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, I did like this more and I'd like to have a more traditional RPG on there. You're still early in - after an hour more you'll see just how funny and challenging it can be. :D Maybe not even that. I liked that brief little moment after Harvey saved the sheep from the Magubbins.
- @ lalala: I'm sure we'll start seeing some effort by homebrew people soon. There are so many intelligent and ingenious people out there, it'd be ridiculous to think that any device is foolproof and secure. I'm sure we will see a PSP2. I kind of think the PSPgo is a test by Sony. Perhaps the company is considering a download only portable for the next step, and wants to test people's reactions with the PSPgo. @ Mark: And no need to apologize. You did make some really great points and it was a well written commen that you left. :D I think you're right as well, that there is an audience for which the PSPgo makes a lot of sense and is exactly what some people want in a device. And I really liked the point you made about the cost of memory as well. When you factor that in and consider that, it doesn't seem as outrageous. I still would have liked to have seen a game voucher tossed in, or the European PSPgo rewards program implemented worldwide. Just a little extra incentive. I know when I get a console, I like to get at least some game with it. There probably are quite a few people out there who are eager for the PSPgo, and I'm positive it won't be a total fail (ex. Virtual Boy.) Personally, as long as Sony and companies still keep supporting the UMD PSPs, I'm happy. As long as I still have games to play, I'm good. I mean, I'm carrying a purse anyways, so tossing a few UMDs in with the PSP is no big deal for me.
- Hi Mark, Actually, I made no mention of the UMD/game price issue in the article at all. Well, I did mention that the surge in PlayStation Store sales could be due to existing PSP owners buying and not PSPgo owners, but that doesn't really pertain to the issue you're discussing. And the opinion article you suggested, "People with no internet connections get the shaft having to pay full price for games on UMD" would be quite difficult to defend. It costs more to sell a game that way, after all, and then the stores selling said UMDs have to make a profit. So it would actually make sense for UMD versions to cost more. (That isn't the case here, since games are pretty much the same price new on both PSN and UMD after launch. Of course, there are the inevitable UMD price drops that tend to happen 3-5 months after a release, but lets not get into that. :D) In a time like this, when many people don't have a lot of spare cash lying around, price is going to be an important factor when it comes to buying games. That's why I think so many people are quick to bring up the UMD vs. download issue. People purchasing UMDs do get a bit of an advantage. For example, the Prinny and SMT: Persona UMDs both came with soundtracks for $39.99. The digital releases don't include the soundtrack. Doesn't that seem unfair to PSPgo owners? Also, there's the resale option, which would allow for the purchase of a new game. You are right though - both sides have pros and cons and it's a matter of personal preference as to which medium to choose. (Personally, I have a collector mentality so I'd always choose the hard copy over the intangible one. :D)
- That's another great point Caid. Especially if you figure in the price of used UMDs. Another good point that I didn't mention is the PSPgo reinforces region protection. With my current PSP 2001 model unit, I can play games from anywhere, meaning I'm not forced to only accept what's released in the US.
- Action Replay Wii doesn't let you enter codes for specific games. It just lets you access and use game saves from Datel that are enhanced.
- RE: Angel Kirby cross stitch [Gamertell]Glad you liked it. No pattern. Just enlarged the image from the sprite database. :D
- RE: Fangbangers, get ready for True Blood game [Gamertell]What about a dating sim based on Sookie's experiences? It's hard to keep track of all the men she's been with in the books.
- I wish my local Japanese bookstore carried it. Alas, they only have the main Dengeki. That strap would look AWESOME on a DS or PSP. XD Did the latest issue (if you got it) mention Arabian's Lost DS? It sounds kinda cool.
- Yup! Joystiq was the site with the latest story. You can see it here: http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/12/there-are-22-802-words-in-scribblenauts/ And you're right! Rickroll is on the list!
- RE: Important Importables: Idolm@ster [Gamertell]@ dork at large: You're absolutely right! I forgot the Live for You OVA that was included with the Xbox 360 Live for You game. And it is a shame that there'll never be localizations. The guides available are great though. I used the Xbox 360 one to help me through my first playthrough of Perfect Sun. @ bleach1st: Thanks so much! It's really a surprisingly fun game. When I first heard about it, I wasn't sure I'd enjoy it, but once I played Perfect Sun I was hooked. I'm really looking forward to Dearly Stars now!
- Doesn't it? I think it was Joystiq that just reported that hackers have already gotten their hands on it, dissected the game and discovered it can recognize over 22,000 words.
- RE: How To: A modern guide to Sega's Dreamcast [Gamertell]Very informative! I'm going to download the checklist to keep for reference. Thanks for writing it! I ended up caving and ordering the Princess Maker Collection from Play-Asia. (I already know Princess Maker 2 is awesome, and I'm sure Princess Maker 1 will be good as well.) I think I'll end up going for one of the Pop'n Music's too before the year's out. I highly recommend the DC-IE Import Enabler. I stopped by this awesome game store in Chicago yesterday that had a few of them for sale. If you can't find a Gameshark, it's a great way to get import games to work and the sheet that comes with it lists some import games to check out.
- Cool! Thanks so much. I borrowed Power Stone from a friend (PSP version), so I'm not so sure about that. I think I'd rather hunt down Marvel vs. Capcom 2. I've heard good things about Sonic Adventure and JoJo's. I'm already keeping an eye out for a cheap GameShark cause I want the Princess Maker collection, a Sakura Taisen game, the Takuyo Symphony game and maaaaybe one or the Hello Kitty or Card Captor Sakura games.
- I just got a Dreamcast used at a local Goodwill, and Soul Caliber was one of the 6 games that came with it. I had no idea that the anniversary just came up. Can you recommend any good games? Shenmue, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, the aforementioned Soul Caliber, Crazy Taxi and a Tomb Raider were among the games it came with.
- Yup! It was released May 13, 2008. So it should be in a store near you now - maybe even used. :D
- RE: Amaterasu's legacy continues in Okamiden DS [Gamertell]@ Kei: It could just be the intro shots. After all, this is the first peek from Famitsu. @ Janine: Same here! I hope they don't have those STUPID puzzles where you have to get down to the bottom of a mine/well. I never finished the original Okami cause I couldn't get that rabbit/princess/girl Kaguya to the bottom of one of those!
- It doesn't really look all that tiny when you're actually playing. But I know what you mean. At first I was all weirded out by the Wii Harvest Moon's graphics. I've heard about that! I have the first Lunar game for both the PS1 and GBA, so I'll probably pass. I think I'd wait for Eternal Blue because, while I have the PS1 version, I never finished it. :P I'd be much more motivated to complete a portable version. Isn't that weird? I have no problem finishing portable versions of games, but can't seem to find the time to finish console versions.
- True, but what about combat and questing fun? I still haven't played the second one yet. XD Is it good?
- I wish it'd be a PC episodic game. Apparently each period of the character's life is somehow going to be an episode I gather? I'm kind of disappointed in the direction Fable III seems to be taking. I always thought of the Fable games as being about heroism and starting out with nothing and working up to having almost everything. But who knows? Maybe it'll work out well.
- RE: 5 Spirited Heart secrets to success [Gamertell]@ Joy: Exactly. Boost your character's stats so they'll fulfill the requirements of the advanced job. Then go to the basic job to unlock your first 3-4 visits with him. Then head to the advanced job to start seeing him again.
- RE: Hardcore Wii Franchise #5: Fire Emblem [Gamertell]You forgot to mention - if you have a GameCube Path of Radiance save file, you can load it before you start Radiant Dawn to have character relationships and (I'm pretty sure) level data for returning characters.
- @MsMuffin: Probably not. It's part visual novel, so there's plenty of reading required. If you can understand spoken Japanese, you should be okay as there's tons of voice acting and guides available online.
- Surprisingly, no. I only log on once a week to play. Though I do stop by the site to enter the codes for free stuff once a week.
- Nice addition to the game. I haven't tried it yet though. I'm too focused on the ninja job.
- There actually were two follow up posts on this Sara. :D Reviews of both the Heath and Mana energy potions. You can see the stories here: http://www.gamertell.com/gaming/comment/gamertell-review-harcos-health-energy-potion/ http://www.gamertell.com/gaming/comment/gamertell-review-harcos-mana-energy-potion/ Red is better than blue, btw.
- @ ... : This is a DS game so you can't download it. You can purchase it at Play-Asia, Himeya Shop and Yes Asia, if you're interested in it.
- @ Bronte: I'll try contacting Namco Bandai (since they own D3 now) and see if I can get any info on whether or not Vampire Knight DS would ever see an English language release. So far, there's no word on it. There's a lot of hirigana and katakana in the game, plus there's lots of voice acting. @ Lauren: I don't think English releases of the game are in the cards, but if one is ever planned, I'll be sure to report it! :D
- Even though I'm not a Star Wars fan, I have to say the chopsticks are quite nifty!
- @ bleach1st: I ADORE UVERworld! I have the BUGRIGHT and Timeless CDs.
- RE: 5 Spirited Heart secrets to success [Gamertell]@ Liiiine: The same thing happened to me, however Jessi (who commented above) was able to get his ending. Apparently, you have to get that scene before you turn 26 years old. Perhaps when your character is 24 or 25.
- @megz: Nope, there's no English language release planned. And it's only in Japanese. Most videogame import sites (Play Asia, Yes Asia, etc) carry it.
- I was just joking when I said that. Besides, better late than not at all! It's good to see Bethesda isn't excluding anyone.
- Pretty much the best advice I can give is talk to EVERYONE and try to say what you think they'd want to hear. Worse comes to worse, you'll always have Yuzu's sucky ending as an option. I'm absolutely hooked on it. I got Yuzu's ending yesterday and just restarted today. First thing I did was fuse Remiel and now I'm hopefully working toward's Gin's ending. (If it doesn't go well, I'll see if I can have Naoya or Kaido's endings open as well.)
- RE: Gamertell Review: Harcos' Mana Energy Potion [Gamertell]@ Jessi: We should drink them while wearing Snuggies! And looking at the Obama Chia pet. @Sythlia: Nope, no sugar in it. But it does taste abnormally sweet.
- It does, doesn't it? XD
- So far it looks like Annie just wins the Prince's heart by building a successful resort. It sounds REALLY funny. I was looking at Japanese sites for info and it turns out she doesn't want him because she loves him or anything. She's just exceptionally lazy and knows if she becomes a princess she'll be set for life.
- HI KMD: You should have no trouble playing against your friend, no matter what versions each of you have. However, save files are exclusive. You can only load a JP save file for a JP version game and an Asia save file for an Asia version game. Hope that helps you out!
- Hi Drake! Yup. When I saw this I remembered back to my PS1 days when a brief power outage totaled one of my PS1 memory cards.
- RE: Gamertell Review: The Sims 3 for PC and Mac [Gamertell]You just gotta keep an eye out at your local Goodwill. That's where I find my best bargains. Sometimes Salvation Army as well. EA just released a patch for the Sims 3 that seems to fix everything. At least now Story Progression can be turned off and ultra speed is actually speedy! I miss the community lots as well. You're right though, it'll probably be an expansion thing. I'd always make an all-purpose Sims 2 lot too! I kind of wish I could do that here as well, just to make things simpler.
