Firefox 3 RC 1 has ten critical Flaws

by Zach Flauaus on May 26, 2008 at 08:49 AM

Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 users, listen up. Mozilla has stated that RC1 contains ten “high-priority” bugs, which have been marked as “critical.” Released almost two weeks ago, RC1 was thought by the developers as a possible final product, but now that these flaws are coming to light, the company is debating whether to release Firefox 3 Final with the updates or ship out another release candidate for further testing from the community.

“We are making a go/no go decision early next week, as we are still collecting feedback.”

Some of the bugs include certain websites crashing the browser, Ubuntu 8.04 breaking “3.0pre’s addons,” the spell checker once disabled is not able to be re-enabled again, and drag and drop bookmarks not being usable. These bugs could also be fixed, if RC1 is the final release, in 3.0.1 (which would essentially be RC2). The bugs are currently undergoing testing and by May 27, we’ll have word if RC1 is in fact the final release or if RC2 will be compiled and released to the public for another round of testing.

Windows temporarily shuts down XP, Vista Automatic Updates

by Robert Nelson on Apr 30, 2008 at 09:37 AM

It turns out that April 29 was not the day for Windows XP SP3 to be officially released. However it was not just SP3 that was delayed, all of the updates for both Windows XP and also Vista have been stopped temporarily. The issue is due to another product called Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System, which was causing some incompatibility issues. In addition to XP’s SP3, the SP1 for Vista is also being affected. The update for XP was put on hold, while the update for Vista is still available, its just not available as an automatic item. Microsoft is encouraging anyone who is running Microsoft Dynamics RMS to not install Vista SP1.

Have lots of Twitter friends, don’t use your account, why not sell it?

by Robert Nelson on Apr 13, 2008 at 04:58 PM

Andrew Baron Twitter account for sale

Well it had to happen, someone had to be the first, after all we have seen other social service accounts hit the open market, but Andrew Baron of Rocketboom fame has put his Twitter account up for sale.

Andrew was kind enough to offer up an explanation to his loyal followers:

I really love my Twitter account but I feel like I haven’t been using it the way I want to. Quite honestly, I feel sorry for all of my followers because they wind up with my tweets in their timelines and I haven’t been able to utilize the medium the way I want to. I also participate in another Twitter account over on Rocketboom so I’m thinking I’ll post more over there and start up a new account to do what I want to do next.

Andrew Baron has around 1,500 followers and as of this writing (4/13/2008 at 9:15 am) the auction currently sits at $510 after 26 bids. My question is, who thinks this will be worth that kind of money? Twitter accounts, especially when based from someone’s name seem, well kind of personal, I wonder just how many subscribers will remain after the new owner begins to post. Just in case you want to follow the action, you can check out the auction over at eBay.

Live Search for BlackBerry, Windows Mobile to get new features

by David Gonzales on Apr 5, 2008 at 03:59 PM

Microsoft is going to add new features to the Live Search found on BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices, according to a keynote speech made by Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division, at CTIA wireless 2008.

One of the changes in the Live Search feature for BlackBerry devices is the addition of voice-enabled search, in which users will be able to talk at their phone to find businesses and get driving directions alongside results shown on interactive maps. On the other hand, Windows Mobile users will get the ability to view the addresses of contacts on a map, get directions and view custom maps of user-made locations and events. WinMo users will also be able to launch Web search directly from the client, and find Web pages, product comparisons, and other information on the Internet. Weather updates will also be included in the set of new features for Windows Mobile devices.

The updates for Windows Mobile are expected to be released by spring, while the BlackBerry update’s release date is still uncertain.

YouTube updates embedded video player, adds new control features

by David Gonzales on Mar 17, 2008 at 11:48 PM

YouTube embedded video player differences between old and new

You might not notice but YouTube has actually updated its embedded video players and added a few minor tweaks. I’m not sure if this feature was active in the old YouTube video player but the new one is now blatantly supporting keyboard shortcuts, including: space bar to pause the video and then resume it, right arrow to fast forward, left arrow to rewind/replay the video, and the up/down arrows to adjust volume. The overlayed YouTube logo from the old video player was also moved to the lower right corner of the player to replace the Menu button with essentially unchanged features (shows related videos and embed code when clicked). Not exactly the live video streaming option everyone was debating about recently, but still a cool update to the world’s coolest online video site.

Twitter seems to get a few reactions from users and/or potential users; those who love it, those who hate it and those who simply do not understand. While those of us who love Twitter may not be able to help the haters, the following 2.5 minute video may just be enough to convert those who cannot understand.

Keep reading to check out the excellent “Twitter in Plain English” video…
