Toys ‘R’ Us says more PS3s, Wiis coming before Christmas

by Doug Berger on Dec 19, 2006 at 02:57 PM

Toys R Us

Today Toys “R” Us claimed they have “thousands” of Nintendo Wiis, and 6,000 PS3 units ready to be released before Christmas.  Do you think they know how awkward of a time it is to be releasing new units?  It’s unheard of to be releasing new shipments less than a week before Christmas.  But as bizarre a move as it is, consumers will still flock to the stores scrambling to get a unit for their kid (or themselves).  The company has not announced the real number of Wii units they will have in stock… because let’s be honest, “thousands” is quite vague.

Joystiq points out the “fast one” Toys “R” Us pulled on shoppers on Black Friday last month.

But that sounds consistent with previous fast ones Toys “R” Us pulled on consumers when the company baited-and-switched Black Friday shoppers, forcing them to purchase a $450 bundle if they indeed wanted the $250 console. Prospective buyers beware.

GameStop, Toys “R” Us chosen by Nintendo to host Wii launch

by Doug Berger on Nov 4, 2006 at 01:33 AM

Toys R Us New York

Nintendo America has just announced they have selected GameStop and Toys “R” Us for the official launch of their new Wii game console on November 19th @ midnight.  Terms of the partnership were not released, but we’re expecting the two store chains to have a ton more Wii supply and accessories than that of other retails store (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.).

The official launch events will be held at Toys “R” Us’ flagship Time Square store in NY, NY, as well as GameStop’s Universal CityWalk store in LA, CA.  The events will include live entertainment and a slim chance for walking out of there with a Wii.  If this is anything like the Xbox 360 launch last year, you’re better off going to a low-key Target or Wal-Mart for this one.
