Who’s on Crack in Tech: 10.03.2008 Edition

by JG Mason on Oct 3, 2008 at 01:20 PM

This is where we call out by names the actions and companies that seem odd, out of touch or just plain straight up smokin’ crack.  Technology is an odd realm where PR speak doesn’t hold a lot of water if the 1s and 0s don’t line up.  This week sees posturing, positioning and flat out insanity.  Here is what caught my eye this week:

HTC offers up the Ice White Touch Diamond

by Robert Nelson on Sep 18, 2008 at 09:09 AM

HTC offers up the Ice White Touch Diamond

HTC has recently introduced a new color for their existing Touch Diamond—Ice White. The new shade will join the current black and, of course, will remain the same feature wise. Overall, the new Ice White color is just a nice refresh, and perhaps a way to spur some renewed interest in a current product.

Now, potential Touch Diamond users can experience the same decisions as those looking to purchase an iPhone 3G. The choice to go with the black that may show more smudges, or go with the white that may be more smudge free but will most likely show some more dirt. Of course, it sounds like a personal choice to me, but I kind of like the white.

As a refresher, the Touch Diamond features a 2.8-inch VGA touch screen, 3.2-megapixel camera, 4GB of internal storage, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, GPS and is powered by a 528MHz Qualcomm MSM 7201A processor running Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional.

Rumored HTC Touch Opal officially unveiled as the HTC Viva

HTC has announced the successor to the HTC Touch, and although the recently rumored HTC Opal was pretty close on specs and design, the handset has officially been dubbed the HTC Viva.

Overall the Viva is a decent handset, that according to HTC will be affordable, of course a price has not yet been announced, so time will tell just how accurate that statement will prove to be. Otherwise the HTC Viva will feature HTC’s TouchFLO and be running Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional.

Sprint’s HTC Touch Diamond now available

by Robert Nelson on Sep 15, 2008 at 09:30 AM

Sprint's HTC Touch Diamond now available

As expected, Sprint has officially added the HTC Touch Diamond to its lineup. As of this posting, the Diamond is just available online, but retail availability is expected to begin soon, possibly as early as later today. All things considered, it is kind of nice to order online and have it shipped to your door anyway. The phone features are the same as we have come to love and expect, it even has that rumored red backside. Otherwise the Sprint branded Touch Diamond will have a “regular” price of $549.99, but that can be lowered to just $249.99 with a $200 instant savings and a $100 mail-in-rebate. Keep in mind that lowered price also requires a two-year agreement.

HTC Opal rumored to replace the current HTC Touch?

by Robert Nelson on Sep 9, 2008 at 03:27 PM

HTC Opal rumored to replace the current HTC Touch?

Still nothing official coming from the HTC camp, but it looks like the replacement to the Touch has been determined and it has been dubbed the HTC Opal. With the details coming from what is mentioned to be a leaked PDF from HTC, the Opal is stated to be running Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional along with the latest TouchFLO 3D interface.

So far, it sounds pretty good, but the specs are not all that impressive considering this is rumored to be a follow-up device. According to the leaked PDF, the Opal is expected to feature a 2.8-inch 240 x 320 QVGA display, 2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 and a microSD card slot. Additionally it will also offer 256MB ROM, 128MB RAM and be powered by a 200MHz TI OMAP 850 processor.

Keep in mind that this PDF is dated July 3, which means that its about two months old now and that these are not official or final. Which means that these specs could be changed in the final version, if they have not seen a few improvements already. As you would expect nothing has been mentioned about availability or pricing.

HTC Touch Diamond coming to Sprint on September 14

by Robert Nelson on Sep 5, 2008 at 08:22 AM

The Sprint branded HTC Touch Diamond, yet another handset that seems like the release will never come with rumored date after rumored date. The latest was calling for the Touch Diamond to be released in August, but as we all know now that has already come and gone, of course a new date has come up and this time we are pretty sure its accurate.

PC Magazine is reporting that the Touch Diamond will be available on September 14 and that it will be retailing for $249.99, which comes along with a two-year agreement and after a $100 rebate, we can only hope that its an instant rebate. Either way, it sounds like a decent price, thankfully the pending release date is not that far into the future, lets just hope it sticks this time.

Is the HTC Touch Pro landing with AT&T as the HTC Fuze?

Is the HTC Touch Pro landing with AT&T as the HTC Fuze?

It looks like AT&T will soon be adding will soon be adding the HTC Touch Pro to its already hot lineup, of course the latest HTC goodness is expected to see a name change and be marketed as the HTC Fuze.

Details are light at the moment, and keep in mind this is still based on speculation and rumor, however sources are claiming the HTC Fuze will be available “sooner rather than later.” As you would expect we have not yet found any information regarding price, but fear not we will keep you up to date as more information comes available.

Will the Sprint branded HTC Touch Diamond be red?

by Robert Nelson on Aug 15, 2008 at 02:02 PM

Sprint branded HTC Touch Diamond in Red

At this point, although it still has not been officially confirmed we are fully expecting Sprint to release an HTC Touch Diamond in the near future, however these latest images are showing off a newly colored red Diamond. Of course these are likely to be nothing more than a Photoshop hoax, so use your best judgment as to whether they are real or not. Personally they look a bit faked, but considering how many other handsets are appearing in various colors lately, you never know for sure. The latest rumored availability date we have come across is August 28, hopefully (for Sprint users) this date will hold true.
