Blackberry gets remote office functionality thanks to Cortado

by JG Mason on Sep 17, 2008 at 12:45 PM

CortadoCortado (I had to look it up) is a company that is betting big the BlackBerry is staying firmly planted in the business world.  Their new application for BlackBerry Smartphones combines remote access to your files with printing/faxing options.  In short, Cortado is making your laptop a leave at home device.

Cortado Corporate Server Professional increases flexibility and lets users always have up-to-date information available while mobile. The easy-to-use software enables BlackBerry smartphone users to securely access and organize files and folders stored on the company network. In addition, users can print in original format to any Bluetooth-enabled or network printer, send faxes, or present documents on a computer or projector screen.

The heart of the matter really is how confident are you that you’ll be using a BlackBerry in one year, two, five?  With the slew of hot new phones like the iPhone and HTC’s offerings, can anyone be that confident?

Read on to find out if I think is something you crackberries ought to consider.

“push” sync for files is here: SugarSync

by JG Mason on Jun 10, 2008 at 08:27 AM

Online storage isn’t real exciting to me: I see a box online that I can put things and forget about them.  But the judges at this year GSMA’s Mobile Innovation Marketplace- Americas (part of the GSM show in Barcelona) saw something more in this year’s Top Innovator in the category of Most Innovative Consumer Application or Service and a Global Semi-Finalist in the Americas leg of the 2009 Mobile Innovation Global Award Competition.  They selected SugarSync, an intriguing new service that is pushing the concept.

I used “pushing” there for a reason.  Their patent-pending service brings “push” changes to your files in much the same way Exchange “pushes” new mail to your device.  Yes, change a file and it is backed up online just like that.  But that box online I envisioned isn’t a box at all with SugarSync, rather you can access your files online, you can even share them with others.

In the last few weeks, CNET ranked SugarSync with a five-star review and dubbed it the “most useful sync tool ever,” PC Magazine awarded it four stars, and Laptop Magazine gave it both its Editor’s Choice and Ultimate Choice awards, saying SugarSync “changed the way we look at online backup…this is online storage done right.”

I’ve been using SugarSync this week and so far, I am really liking what I am seeing.  I’ll have a full review up in the coming week.  Early indications are this is one to watch and the folks at GSMA agree.

GooSync adds Gmail contacts synchronization feature

by Arnold Zafra on May 25, 2008 at 07:01 AM

GooSync

GooSync, a useful tool that lets you sync your Google appointments and tasks to your smarthphone, has just added support for synchronizing your Gmail contacts as well. What’s even better is the fact that GooSync works both ways. That is, whenever you add new contacts from your Gmail accounts, it automatically updates your mobile phone’s directory the next time you run the syncing process and vice versa.

But before you get too excited and go on a syncing frenzy, there’s one catch however. Gmail contacts to mobile phone synchronization only works if you have a GooSync Premium account. To upgrade to premium account, just log-in to your GooSync account and hit the “Upgrade” button. If you’re not yet using GooSync, head over GooSync’s website and find out what you’re missing for not using this cool application.

Store your mobiles contacts and calendar securely on ZYB

by Adam Berger on Aug 31, 2006 at 09:09 PM

ZYBIf you are afraid of losing all the contacts stored on your mobile, try ZYB.com. ZYB is offering a new online service that allows users to store, manage, and share their mobiles contacts and calendar online. The service is free and works with almost all operators and more than 200 different phone models. It’s very simple to get started, just sign up on zyb.com, select your mobile phone model and in a matter of seconds you will receive a message (SMS) that automatically configures your mobile to your ZYB profile. Once configured, the mobile is now ready to be synchronised with ZYB. No installation of software required. After the first synchronisation the mobiles contacts and calendar can be edited from the user’s personal profile on zyb.com and all changes can be copied directly to the mobile.

ZYB allows users to store an unlimited number of contacts and calendar entries and access them online from anywhere in the world. As such ZYB also works as a backup, so if a user is unlucky and loses his mobile, all he has to do to get his data back is to sync a new mobile with his ZYB account.

So now when you drop your cellphone in the lake you don’t have to worry about your contact, you just have to figure out how to convince your wireless company that the red water dot is not actually from water and it is their fault.

[Thanks Tommy]
