Bye bye Blockbuster? Hollywood hearts YouTube? Um, no.
You’ve got to feel bad for YouTube. After becoming the Internet’s darling for such fun gags, it wants to get a day job. No longer content with just the clearing house for pranks and short clips, it wants to be in the full length movie business as well as the TV show business.
YouTube served up this kind of content at one time but was forced to take most of it down over copyright claims. Now YouTube is working with Hollywood to gain their trust and their content.
But it isn’t an easy road. Sure YouTube has the traffic, 81 million folks in September but they also have the baggage. And it’s more than just past indiscretions.

Who’s On Crack in tech: Halloween edition
Each year we are offered tricks and treats by tech companies. Some products turn out better than we hope and some far worse than we ever imagined. For this Halloween Who’s on Crack, let’s take a look at who has offered more treats than tricks.
As promised, I am not including Motorola in this list, though I think we all know they belong here. With that, I give you my trick or treat list.

Netflix is loose, dates everyone: now TiVo
Whoa, Netflix! First came the Watch Instantly on the PC, then dedicated boxes, then Mac, then yesterday’s announcement of Xbox and now this one: TiVo will stream Netflix content on series 3, HD and HD XL receivers and up (sorry DirecTV users, no soup for you). Hot dang, what is next for Netflix, streaming on my toaster?
For TiVo, this is huge news. TiVo’s loyal army surely has been considering their options as aged equipment, user interface and attractive alternative offers have been rolling in from providers. TiVo begins testing the service in select markets today and plans to offer it nationwide by early December so you’ll have plenty of time to go back and forth on deciding for a holiday gift.
No news yet on if the HD recievers TiVo offers will get Netflix HD content.

Live video streaming on Blackberry’s through Qik
It was a feature that Blackberry users have been longing to have on their handsets. Finally the wait is over as video web streaming service Qik has just released the alpha version of its mobile video streaming client for Blackberry devices.
The new Qik mobile video streaming app will let you live stream your video from your mobile phone to Qik.com and major social networking sites including Facebook, MySpace as well your personal blogs. Download the application from http://qik.com/dl/165. After installing the app on your Blackberry device, you can start streaming live videos by simply pressing the Stream button that will appear when you fire up the application on your Blackberry device.
Watch baseball at the airport
Do you like baseball? Do you spend a lot of time in airports? Well there’s a solution for you!
Like everything involving the MLB, they want to charge you a for a special four-hour pass to watch playoff baseball in the luxury of your own laptop. You will also need to have a Boingo subscription to get access to the MLB pass.
Never mind the fact that a lot of airports have sports bars where you can just watch the game. Maybe this is for that business traveler who hangs out in those mystical lounge/club areas because they have a special card.
Netflix streaming gets a little more interesting, Starz Play content added
Netflix and Starz have just announced a new partnership that will bring some additional quality content to the “Watch Instantly” category. The Starz partnership will add a total of 2,500 movies and television shows, about 1,000 titles will be made available immediately with the remainder coming over the next few weeks.
This new content from Starz will be made available to all Netflix subscribers under the terms of the “Watch Instantly” category, meaning that your subscription level will determine how many hours of streaming you receive each month. In addition they will also be offering a Starz only package for $7.99 a month that will allow subscribers to only view content from the Starz Play package.

MySpace Music gets monetized
Today, MySpace unveils the all-new MySpace Music alongside new BFFs: EMI Music, SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group (NYSE:WMG), and Sony ATV/ Music Publishing.
Users can do all the playlist making, swapping, downloading, streaming, etc. to their hearts’ desires. Expect to be enticed by MySpace Music partners McDonald’s, Sony Pictures, State Farm, and Toyota. We can expect free downloads from Mickey D’s, State Farm playlists and Toyota Tuesdays where anything can happen.
Alltel wants to make your phone an iPod for $5 per month
Alltel, the owner of the
world’s
America’s (meaning USA) largest wireless network, announced today they will be offering the nuTsie service on select phones bringing customers their iTunes music wherever they are, just like an iPhone. nuTsie says they’ve got over 1 million happy users and the Alltel deal gives them direct access to even more. Alltel will become the first wireless carrier to offer the service to their customers.
Forget syncing, nuTsie works via low-bandwidth streaming. No downloading, sideloading or waiting. Seems like a simple idea. In addition to offering access to users iTunes music, a clever “Serendipity Slider” allows music recommendations to be be played as well opening up users to new music. Customers can also share playlists, check out lyrics and view YouTube videos, if the phone supports these features. Alltel is offering the service for $5 per month or $19 per year.

YouTube won’t be going live any time soon
Despite previous statements declaring that their online service would be offering live video streaming some time this year, a source inside now states that YouTube won’t be going live after all. There goes the business plans of several planning to make a buck off the live streaming idea, like the somewhat cult-popular lifecast justin.tv. Some outsiders have thought this was the next expected step for YouTube, being that they make a killing in the market for pre-recorded Web video. Even Steve Chen, Co-Founder of YouTube, lent plausibility to the leap to live streaming when the idea first hit the public’s ear by telling Pop 17’s Sarah Meyer’s “Live video is something we always wanted to do but haven’t had the resources to do it correctly, but now with Google, we hope to launch something this year.“ Well, that was in February, and it isn’t happening, and sources say it won’t be happening next year either.
Kodak is coming out with an HD Player, just who is gonna buy it?
Get ready, here comes Kodak into the TV set-top box market. Due to hit stores in September, their Theatre HD Player is a Wi-Fi equipped TV set-top box that can stream music, videos, and photos from any computer that is connected to the same network right to your HDTV. It offers 720 playback, HDMI and component output ports, and a USB port.
Sounds decent, right? Sure. Until you take a look at the price tag and then compare it to what is already on the market and comparable. We have the PlayStation 3 and AppleTV. These two alone offer the exact same features and more. The Theatre HD Player will run you $300. Now, while a 40GB PS3 is a little pricier at $400; it also has a Blu-ray player and the obvious video game console included. The AppleTV costs less than the Theatre HD at $229, and it even allows you to store media.
