FCC leaks the Sirius Starmate 5, with possible XM support
Another day another product leak from the FCC, the latest is the Starmate 5 from Sirius, which in by itself would not be that exciting. However in this case based on a memo that switched hands from a “testing firm and the FCC authorization staff” included the possibility of the Starmate 5 supporting Sirius channels as well as XM.
“We used the satellite radio signal coming from either XM or Sirius,”
Which assuming that happens, and note as of now its just speculation as nothing official has been announced, this would be the first hybrid satellite radio receiver. Sounds like a great move, however a very risky move, while the DOJ has given their seal of approval on the merger, its still pending FCC approval which is not expected to take place until sometime late in May or possibly into June.
Sirius announces Stilettos, Stratus, Starmates, and Sportster
Sirius has just taken the wraps off of their latest and greatest satellite radios: the Stiletto10, Stiletto 100, Sportster3, Starmate4, Starmate3, and Stratus. Here’s a quick rundown of the features.
Both the Stiletto 10 and 100 are the company’s first portables capable of playing live Sirius broadcasts. The 100 offers...you guessed it… 100 hours of total storage capacity and WiFi connectivity (10 hours for the Stiletto 10). The battery will last you 20 hours on both models. The 10 and 100 models will run you $249 and $349 respectively and will be available in the September/October time-frame.
The Sportster3 is a stripped down version of the already existing Sportster4, without the Replay functionality. This guy will be available in September for @119.99.
The Starmate4 (pictured above) is an “ultra-slim” device with a wide-screen display that replays up to 44 minutes of content. You can pause, rewind, and fast-forward the live music at your convenience. I’m just curious of how they came up with 44 minutes instead of say… an hour? The Starmate4 will be available in October for $119.99.
Next is the Starmate3, which is a scaled down version of the Starmate4 that we just talked about. It’s got all of the same features as it’s big brother except for the Replay functionality. Look for it in select stores in October. It will run $99.99.
Finally, the Sirius Stratus which features 10 button presets, direct entry tuning, push button controls, One-touch Jump, a built-in FM transmitter, and an FM-Receiver. The Stratus will be available in October for $59.99.
