Falcon 1 the first private craft to make it to space

by Shawn Ingram on Sep 29, 2008 at 04:15 PM

After three unsuccessful flights, the fourth finally worked.  SpaceX has managed to get their Falcon 1 space craft into space.  Taking off from Kwajalein Atoll, an island in the South Pacific the Falcon 1 was able to fly into space, soaring above the International Space Station at a speed of 5200 meters per second.  The flight of the Falcon 1 makes it the first ever private space craft to actually get into space.

Firefox usage spreads, its now found even in outer-space

by Robert Nelson on Apr 12, 2008 at 10:12 AM

Hubble Space Telescope shows Firefox Logo in space

People often say they look to the stars for inspiration and what a better message than this, we should be using Firefox. On the left is an image taken by the Hubble telescope and on the right is that same image with our favorite browsers icon over-layed. While not an exact match, they are strikingly similar.

While it does appear that there was some editing done to the original image, that seems to have been kept to a minimum. Keep reading to check out the original untouched image that was taken from the Hubble space telescope way back in February 2004.

NASA beams the Beatles into space; Aliens generally confused

by Ed Arnold on Feb 2, 2008 at 01:21 AM

NASA logo

NASA plans on beaming The Beatles Across the Universe into space making it the first song to be used in such a way. The transmission of the song will mark the 40th anniversary of the song’s recording. It will be aimed at the North Star, Polaris, 431 light years away from Earth, and it will travel across the universe at a speed of 186,000 miles per second. This will also mark 50 years of NASA, 45 years of the Deep Space Network and 50 years since the founding of Explorer 1, the first US satellite.

“Amazing! Well done, Nasa! Send my love to the aliens.” was Sir Paul McCartney’s reaction to the news.

Fans can participate in the event by playing the song around the world at midnight GMT on Monday night - the same time it will be transmitted by NASA. Still no word yet on when we might see the mysterious “Yellow Submarine” branded iPod. Perhaps the little green men can help Steve Jobs with that.

OrigamiPlane

The International Space Flight Center and researchers from the University of Tokyo have teamed up with members of the Japan Origami Airplane Association to develop a paper aircraft capable of surviving the flight from its base to the surface of the earth. Yes, you heard and read the news correctly, and the prototype will be 8 centimeters (3.1 in) long and weigh about 30 grams. Researchers began testing the strength and heat resistance a few days ago in an ultra-high-speed wind tunnel at the University of Tokyo’s Okashiwa campus.
