Motorola SLVR L9 slimphone due out Q2 2007
Motorola is making its presence felt at this year’s 3GSM. Among the devices they’ve introduced this week is the SLVR L9. The L9, which follows the SLVR L7 in the company’s lineup, is a GSM phone with GPRS/EDGE class 10 data, and now has even more of a focus on entertainment.
The new L9 has a built-in FM radio with RDS - so you can see the title and artist of the song you’re listening to. The L9 shows support for MP3, AAC, AAC+, AAC+ enhanced, AMR, and WAV. It also packs A2DP stereo Bluetooth, a 2 megapixel camera with MPEG-4 video recording, microSD and MegaSIM slots, 400 minutes of talk-time, and 350 hours of standby. The SLVR L9 should be available sometime in the second quarter of this year.

Verizon to launch Motorola SLVR L7c, maybe next time, Sprint
We all thought Sprint was going to take the lead in launching the Motorola SLVR L7c when they announced it back in October - but unfortunately for them, Verizon has once again beat them to the punch. Verizon will be the first national carrier to launch the CDMA version of the popular slim-phone. The device sports the same feature-set as its GSM cousin with 262,000 color display, VGA camera, microSD support, and Bluetooth. No pricing details have been announced yet, but we’ll have them to you as soon as they’re available.

Sprint to launch RAZR, KRZR, SLVR in time for holidays
Sprint has finally made all you Motorola-lover’s dreams come true. How’d they do this? They just announced plans to launch the Motorola RAZR V3m, SLVR L7c, and KRZR K1m on their network...that’s how! The RAZR and KRZR will be almost the same phones that are already on Verizon except for differences in GUI and of course Sprint’s live TV and Movie services.
The SLVR L7 is traditionally known to sport iTunes, but since Sprint’s got a competing music store, they’ve replaced it with their own interface and called it the L7c. It will also have EVDO, and the rest of the Sprint high-speed offerings. Included are a VGA camera, Bluetooth, and a microSD slot.
According to our friends at Gearlog, Sprint’s Michelle Leff says that prices will be “incredibly competitive.” And they’re going to have to be to compete with Verizon’s versions of these phones. Verizon is currently selling the KRZR for $199 with contract and RAZR for as low as $69. The phones are all expected in November in time for holiday shopping.
Peep Show: Samsung Trace t519 for T-Mobile
The Samsung Trace (t519) is being sold exclusively at T-Mobile, and has added to the busy release calendar the company has had in the month of September. This handset sports a SLVR-like ultra-slim design, claiming to be the thinnest phone on the planet. It is wrapped in a campaign colored plastic shell with a 1.3 megapixel camera on the backside. I’m not sure if it is due to the ultra-sharp screen or the camera itself but the picture come out above average. The speakerphone is good enough but the standard speaker could be louder—it did not pass the “I’m in a club and can’t hear you” test. The microSD slot comes in handy as does Bluetooth when you are on the go. For the price ($99.99) it is a great option for those of you looking to keep your pockets light and turn some heads. Those of you looking for true luxury should check out other models.

Motorola joins RED to help eliminate AIDS
Motorola will be releasing the first in a brand new portfolio of mobile handsets created to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. RED is designed to deliver a sustainable flow of private sector money to the Global Fund to fight AIDS. Mobile operators and retailers from across the UK (BT Mobile, Carphone Warehouse, Fresh, O2, Orange, Tesco Mobile, T-Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Vodafone) have all united behind this initiative. The first product in Motorola’s new (MOTO)RED portfolio will be the ultra slim, red MOTOSLVR.
“RED is a 21st century idea. It’s an amazing thing that these companies are doing—lending their creativity and financial firepower to the Global Fund’s fight against AIDS in Africa, the greatest health crisis in 600 years. I think doing the RED thing, doing good, will turn out to be good business for them,” said Bono, co-creator of RED.
The proceeds of selling just three handsets can provide a year’s worth of school materials and daily hot meals for a child orphaned by AIDS, while 5% of the average yearly phone bill can provide 180 treatments to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
The new red MOTOSLVR will be available to purchase in stores throughout the UK from today. Current partners are American Express, Armani, Converse, Gap and Motorola. We expect Apple to announce RED iPods sometime soon too.
