So we’ve all been there. That rush of panic when we’ve lost (or at least momentarily think we’ve lost) our cell phone.  When our phone contains lots of confidential data like bank info and emails, the panic level tends to rise even more quickly. Now we don’t have to just worry about Joe Finder using up our minutes, but now Joe Finder could access our bank accounts and read all those spicy emails we sent to Suzy at the office, uh-oh. This not even counting in the fact that the money spent on the phone is now down the drain.

Enter your possible savior, the cell phone Superhero! Nope, it’s not some guy sporting a cape and a mask (regardless of their logo), but a new service just launched yesterday in the US and Canada from YouGetItBack.com. Claiming to be able to protect your confidential data and aid in safely returning your gadget, YouGetItBack.com may just be a lost cell phone users new best friend.  The way it works is that once a phone is lost or stolen, subscribers of the downloadable software simply go online and remotely lock their mobile phone. This will prevent anyone else from being able to make calls or access information on the device. Subscribers are also able to retrieve contacts from the phone via the internet.

T-Mobile has begun to officially launch their 3G service. While we have already seen the reports beginning to come in over the weekend, its always nice to get that ‘official’ word, even if its not telling us anything that we did not already know. Better late than never, huh?

The short, and official story is that they have rolled out the 3G coverage in New York City with support for both voice and data. They are also expecting to have coverage become available “across major metropolitan markets” by the end of 2008, however did not mention exactly what those major areas were. While it is official, T-Mobile has activated their 3G service, but as expected from the rumor train, so far it is limited to just New York City. The good news is that the now faster service appears, based on user reports to be for both voice and data. Some are reporting speeds up to 300Kbps or more, a nice improvement coming from EDGE which is 2G and offers an average of 200Kbps.

T-Mobile has promised that the 3G service would be rolled out by this summer, but is expected to hit other major cities before the full roll-out. Hey at least some of T-Mobile’s users can now take full advantage of these 3G-capable handsets that they have been buying. Here’s hoping for a smooth, and quick roll-out.

We have been waiting a long time for T-Mobile to begin rolling out their 3G coverage and finally catch up with their handsets that are able to take advantage of the extra speed. This latest report comes as follow up from the recent rumor that 3G service will be available in 27 markets as early as May. It turns out, at least according a tip that BGR received that May 1 is the date for NYC.
