SanDisk announces MusicGremlin acquisition

by Robert Nelson on Jun 10, 2008 at 02:04 PM

SanDisk has announced they have purchased MusicGremlin, which for those of you who cannot remember, were perhaps way ahead of their time when they released their MusicGremlin Wi-Fi MP3 player a few years back. This terms of the sale were, of course, undisclosed and the details as to just what SanDisk has in the works remains a mystery. We do however know that the acquisition will fall under SanDisk’s Sansa audio/video business unit.

Daniel Schreiber, general manager and senior vice president for SanDisk’s Sansa audio/video business unit stated that;

“MusicGremlin’s digital distribution platform and capabilities will provide SanDisk with adaptive and innovative technology that will play a key role in the development of future Sansa products for consumers,”

While as far as we can remember the big catch on the MusicGremlin, although it was not well received at the time was the built-in Wi-Fi. It looks like SanDisk could be a making an attempt at a second shot with a Wi-Fi enabled music player. SanDisk tried in the past, with yet another acquisition that was the Sansa Connect.

4GB SanDisk Sansa Fuze in Red

The Sansa Fuze from SanDisk has shown its true availability, and while it may not yet be shipping, the listing on Amazon confirms it will be shortly. Well shortly may be a little generous, as Amazon currently has it listed as shipping “within 1 to 3 months.“

The Sansa Fuze will feature a 1.9-inch display, 4GB of internal storage, a microSDHC card slot for additional storage, FM tuner, built-in microphone and a battery life of 24 hours for audio playback or 5 hours for video playback.

It will, according to Amazon be available in black, pink or red and will retail for $99.99. While it would make sense to see other colors and additional storage sizes available, no details have been leaked or announced just yet.

SanDisk releases 4GB Sansa Clip, 32GB Sansa View

by Robert Nelson on Jan 7, 2008 at 06:51 PM

SanDisk Sansa Clip 4GB

SanDisk has upped the storage sizes on both the Sansa Clip and the Sansa View. Both models are expected to be available in February, the 4GB Sansa Clip will be available in silver and retail for $79.99 while the 32GB Sansa View is going to retail for $349.99.

The 4GB Sansa Clip will hold just about 1,000 songs and has up to 15-hours of battery life and an OLED display. According to SanDisk the display will allow “users to select the music they hear, not just wait for songs to come around at random,“ which is a great shot at the iPod Shuffle. With just a little hands on time, the Clip seems like a solid little player and should make a nice alternative. The Clip weighs in at a super light 0.9-ounces and the clip is detachable for those times when its not needed. The current Sansa Clip models, the 1GB in black and 2GB in black, red, pink or blue will remain available and retail for $39.99 and $59.99 respectively.
