Silver PS2 now officially announced

Silver PS2Sony is trying to make the PS3 a little lighter on folks by announcing the release of a new, limited edition silver Playstation 2. The console will sell for $130 and include a silver PS2 controller, yes the rumble controller which will soon extinct. To date Sony has sold more than 111 million of the consoles and 1.12 billion games for it.

“Six years after its initial launch, the PlayStation 2 continues to enjoy nonstop success, outselling all other consoles,” said Jack Tretton, executive vice president, co-COO, Sony Computer Entertainment America. “The introduction of this limited edition model is sure to be a hit this holiday season with die-hard PlayStation fans and new gamers alike.”

Sony plans support the PS2 for a few more years

If you’re worried that all the new games systems will make your current consoles obsolete, it seems it’ll be quite a while before Sony retires either the Playstation 2 (PS2) or PSP. Sony will continue to release new games for both system and allow the PSP to interconnect with the PS3.

For example, the original Playstation (that’s PS1 to gamers) games that are/ will be available for download will be transferable between the PSP and PS3. The PS2 has already been around for 6 years and, according to Sony Marketing SVP Peter Dille, Sony expects the PS2 to survive a “solid 10-year life cycle.” Here’s to four more years!

Glow Gaming to release glow-in-the-dark controllers

If you’re still playing your old school PS2, Xbox, or GameCube, you probably need a way to spice it up a little.  A company called Glow Gaming is coming out with glow-in-the-dark controllers for those systems in time for the holiday season.  The glowing “charge” will last users for about 30 minutes in the dark.  Additionally, controllers have a few other features that the company is touting - including longer data cables for connecting them to the console, and a soft-touch “ivory” feel.

According to the company, there are plans for next-gen console (Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, PS3) versions as well.

Update: The units will cost about $20 and according to the company are “coming soon to a retailer near you!”

Sony inducts new titles into “Greatest Hits” collection

This past Friday, Sony announced the induction of five new titles into their Greatest Hits software collection. For any games to be included in the collection, they must meet a standard of popularity and sales. Peter Dille, Senior Vice President of Marketing of Sony Computer Entertainment America, says

“From Grand Theft Auto to Gran Turismo 4, the Greatest Hits program offers something for everyone, and consistently provides consumers and retailers with best-selling games while further extending the PlayStation 2 value proposition. The new Greatest Hits additions provide an incentive for new gamers to purchase PlayStation 2 and core gamers to add classic titles to their existing libraries.”

The five titles to be inducted include Socom: U.S. Navy SEALs, Shadow of the Colossus, Ratchet: Deadlocked, Jak X: Combat Racing, and Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves. Their induction into the collection will put them in the ranks amongst titles like Grand Theft Auto, Devil May Cry, and SSX. PS2 vs. PS3 graphics on NBA Live ‘07

We all know that the PS3 has better graphics than the PS2, or at least it better be, but the real question is how much better? EA Games showed off the difference in design, graphics, and movement capabilities side-by-side between the two systems. Check it out.
