This Week in Gadgetell: 5/15/06 - 5/21/06
This week, like many weeks, was headlined by two big Apple events, the release of the MacBook and their new store (also known as the glass cube) on 5th in NY as well as Sony’s release of the VAIO UX, a hybrid between a Sidekick and Origami. We also got PS3 Europe pricing, saw the release of Super Mario Bros. of the Nintendo DS, RIAA sued XM, MS released the Vista requirement specs, Sony Ericsson dropped four new phones, Yahoo pulled a redesign as did Flickr and went from Beta to Gamma, Sprint and Verizon announced pricing and support for the Palm 700p, and Plantronics supports VoIP. We also celebrated the 10th anniversary of AIM with the release of Phoneline and Blur-ray hit in an internal drive as well as the Sony AR laptop.
Lets not forget our first look at the desktop software Deskloops and our reviews of the Maxtor OneTouch III Mini Edition (100GB) and the DLO Transdock Micro FM Transmitter. And finally, we had our share of Motorola Q excitement.

AIM Phoneline celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Buddy List
It seems like time did not exist before buddy lists and instant messaging, but my grandmother claims it did and pre-teens today may one day ask, “What a landline?” On the 10th anniversary of the buddy list AOL has introduced their new VoIP calling solution, AIM Phoneline. AIM Phoneline is a new service that offers all AIM users a free, local phone number to receive unlimited incoming calls online through AIM. The new service also offers free online voicemail. As a complement to its free benefits, AIM Phoneline also offers an easy upgrade for those who make lots of calls and want greater flexibility and outbound calling capacity, such as long distance families, long distance cell phone users, and small/home businesses.
AIM Phoneline Unlimited includes unlimited calling in the US, Canada, and more than 30 international destinations for one low fixed monthly fee. In addition to enhanced PC-based call management capabilities, it also offers industry-compliant, nomadic E911 support that will enable AIM Phoneline users to reach emergency services regardless of their location.
Plantronics has also released a new headset that supports Aim Phoneline.

Skype now lets you call free
We can only imagine that Skype is offering a preemptive response to AOL’s upcoming VoIP phone service, Phoneline, because they are now offering free outgoing calls. SkypeOut allows you to dial any regular phone from your PC or Skype access point. In the past it cost dialer’s a few cents a minute to make outgoing calls but these charges have been dropped for calls within the US and Canada (US-US and Canada-Canada). International calling will still costs some change but this is a great new option.
