Samsung; testing geek pulse with conceptual OLED laptop due in 2009

by Debbie Cook on May 18, 2008 at 05:21 PM

Samsung OLED laptop

If Samsung is testing geek reaction to it’s sleek and extremely thin laptop slated to appear possibly in 2009 (or hopefully sooner) this picture does the trick. Wow!

At first glance this shiny black (accented with racy red) laptop elicits increased heart rates and drool. When composure returns however there are important questions that have to be asked. What is that 3rd piece leaning against that 12.1-inch gorgeous razor thin OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display? My guess – it is a protective cover that doubles as a support. How to you control the cursor? Is there room for a battery? This is a laptop – right?

The touch-sensitive keyboard continues the sleek appearance but some worry that the non-tactile feel will be a real let down. Let down maybe but probably not a deal breaker.

Numerous unanswered questions have not squelched anticipation. Samsung has turned up the heat a bit by mentioning a 15.4-inch model in 2009 as well. Does that mean we will see one of these beauties in the near(er) future?

LG upgrades the LH5000 into an ice cream phone

by Arnold Zafra on Mar 31, 2008 at 10:41 AM

LG-LH5000 Ice Cream

LG has upgraded its previously released mobile phone LG-LH5000 with 3 new exciting flavors – vanilla, strawberry and pistachio. I know it sounds ridiculous and you might think that I must be kidding, but actually I’m not. LG has really introduced three new colors flavors for the LH5000. Hopefully, you don’t get it to it thinking that you are actually holding an ice cream.

The LG-LH5000 ice cream phone is a thin flip-phone that boasts 3G connectivity, a 2.2-inch color display with QVGA resolution and 2.2-megapixel camera. The LH5000 ice cream phone lasts through 140 hours of standby time and 150 minutes talk time. The LG ice cream phone also sports an LED lighting in the keypad area which complements the different colors of the phone.

Other than this, there’s not much information available for the LG ice cream phone. The LG-LH5000 is currently available only in Korea.

Samsung to cut off the speaker and call it the K3?

by Doug Berger on Dec 12, 2006 at 04:21 PM

Samsung K3Remember that beauty of an MP3 player - the Samsung K5?  There’s a bit of a mix of rumors lately about a “scaled-down” version of the device in development.  The new YP-K3 will rid itself of the attached speaker that the K5 sports, and take the form of your typical audio player.  Included is a 1.8 inch OLED screen and FM tuner.

We can’t vouch for the photo or specs at this time, but if they’re legit, expect some more info to follow in the near future.

Optimus goes from sick to boring with black and white

by Adam Berger on Nov 28, 2006 at 07:02 AM

Optimus black and white keyboard oled ledOptimus, the makers of the most hyped keyboard, have taken one step backward. Your computer is not broken and your eyes are not deceiving you—the Optimus LED keyboard is no longer in color.

Recently this keyboard featured a regression when it lost its 10 hot-keys and now it will loose all of its color. The keyboard will still be available for pre-order on December 12th but with monochrome keys.  A color version will only be released “later at a greater price.”

So not the coolest peripheral out there anymore.

Optimus’ full OLED keyboard gets a pre-order date

by Doug Berger on Nov 20, 2006 at 06:10 PM

Optimus-103The much hyped keyboard that we announced back in January, the Optimus keyboard, finally has a pre-order date - December 12, 2006.  The device, designed by Russian company Art. Lebedev Studio, will have a small OLED display behind each of the keys, making it so you can see the function of each key in an application.  For example, in Word, when you hold down control, we’re expecting the device will have little copy/paste icons on the [C] and [V] keys.  The new Optimus-103 does not yet have a price or a delivery date.  Expect a hefty price-tag, because OLEDs are still far from cheap.

Optimus Upravalator keyboard, a VGA display with buttons

by Glenn Wolsey on Oct 23, 2006 at 01:56 AM

a The Optimus Upravalator is a new type of keyboard from the design company that brought the customizable OLED keyboard and mini three. Encased within the device is a 10.8 inch LCD Screen, with a resolution of 800x600 pixels. On top of the screen there is a board with 12 transparent buttons. Each button features 4 contact points (top, bottom, left, and right), pressing the button head on ("fifth contact").

Besides power, Upravalator uses 2 cords for the connection to a computer, USB and VGA. You’ll need to use a second monitor port, or a second video card (the video card is up to you, as it will not be included in the standard package). Upravalator works in both Windows and OSX and is expected to be available for sale in the second half of 2007. This is definitely great for designers, as the keyboard is fully customizable.

Sony Ericsson OLED Z610 camera phone

by Adam Berger on Aug 23, 2006 at 10:02 PM

Sony Ericsson Z610

The Sony Ericsson Z610 is a super stylish 3G phone that blends performance and design in one shiny package. The mirror finish on the front cover gives the phone a jewel-like quality that is complimented by a hidden ‘magic mirror’ (a.k.a. OLED) display which can only be seen when in use. Don’t let this Paris Hilton phone fool you, it has a 2.0 megapixel camera for snapping shots of your favorite celebrity friends, moblogging, an integrated RSS reader, push email, a Memory Stick Micro slot up to 1 GB, and of course the soon to be standard 3G, high speed connectivity. Their will be three mirror iterations – Luster Black, Rose Pink & Airy Blue.

FOLED: Flexible OLED display

by Doug Berger on Aug 22, 2006 at 10:38 PM

FOLED

Someone seems to have gotten their hands on a FOLED display - Flexible OLED that is.  If you’re unfamiliar with OLED displays, they are essentially paper thin digital displays that can show anything...and cost a siginificant amount less to fabricate.  For more on the technology, check out the Wikipedia entry.  This technology could be applied to portable gaming consoles, cameras, keyboards, and more.  Check out the video after the break.

8GB Sony Walkman

by Adam Berger on May 13, 2006 at 07:24 PM

Sony Network WalkmanIt seems that Sony may beat Apple to the punch (with the announcement at least) with an upgraded flash based portable audio player. Their new 8 GB Network Walkman will be the highest capacity in their lineup as well as compared to other major competitors in the market. The NW-A1200 will share similar specs with existing models, including that impressive 20-hour battery life, OLED display, quick charge, and other standard portable audio features. The player will ship with Sony’s newly announced SonicStage CP software, which incorporates support for the AAC music (the format used by the iPod but not the copy protection). The player will launch in mid June in the UK and hopefully so thereafter.
