Leaked image of the upcoming Fujitsu Siemens Amilo netbook

by Robert Nelson on Jul 16, 2008 at 02:48 PM

Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Netbook

The above picture features both the existing 17-inch Amilo notebook, which is along side Fujitsu’s upcoming entry into the netbook market. The 8.9-inch netbook is rumored to be coming this autumn and is expected to retail for €400, which is currently around $640 US.

Specs are still unknown, but based on the keyboard it looks like it will be running, or at least have the option for Windows Vista. One thing that we can tell for sure is that if Fujitsu is truly looking to compete in this market, they are going to need to pack something really special inside to justify that price, especially with the Dell E rumored to be coming in at $299.

August launch speculation for the Dell E mini-laptop continues

by Robert Nelson on Jul 15, 2008 at 11:48 AM

Dell E mini laptop

The Dell E mini-laptop has been previously rumored to be coming this August, and while an announcement still has not come officially from Dell that does not seem to be stopping anyone.

DigiTimes has become the latest to add some ‘proof’ to this launch timeframe, claiming that “according to the market sources” this has been confirmed. The Dell E, will enter what has become an overflowing market, however even with their fairly standard offering they should prove to do better than some of the competition just because of the name factor.

The Dell E is expected to be powered by a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor and be running Linux. The Dell E will feature an 8.9-inch 1024 x 600 resolution display, 512MB of RAM, a built-in 0.3-megapixel webcam, Wi-Fi 802.11g and a 4GB SSD.

While the specs are not anything that we have not seen before, the price is expected to be nice, coming in at $299.

Elonex announces the budget-priced One T netbook

by Robert Nelson on Jul 10, 2008 at 06:21 PM

Elonex One T netbook

Elonex has just announced their One T netbook and it not only comes in at an affordable price, but it also has a somewhat stylish look to it. The One T features a 7-inch display with an 800 x 480 resolution, 1GB of on-board storage, SD card slot for additional storage space, Wi-Fi 802.11g, three USB ports, VGA output and is powered by a 400MHz processor.

While its certainly not the most powerful machine on the market, the price tag does make up for that. The Elonex One T is priced at £129 (around $255 US) and is expected to only be available in the UK. Although pricing has not been announced there is also a One T+ model that comes with 2GB of on-board storage.

ECS to release the 3G-enabled G10IL netbook in September

by Arnold Zafra on Jul 9, 2008 at 12:22 PM

ECS G10IL

The US netbook market has never been as active as it is today. While MSI and Asus are busy with their head on battle, some other companies are on the side waiting for the right moment to come into the fray. For ECS, September seems to be the right moment to release their own netbook, the ECS G10IL.

Having to follow some seriously tough competition, ECS had to make sure that their netbook would offer something new that others don’t offer. For the ECS G10IL it has to be the 3G network capability as it will have EDGE, HSUPA, and HSDPA mobile broadband support. It will also come with either an 8.9-inch or a 10-inch LCD display. In addition, this netbook will either have the 8GB SSD with Linpus Lite Linux OS or an 80GB hard drive running Windows XP.

ECS is planning to release a white version of the G10IL in September while the black model will come at a later time. The G10IL is expected to have a tentative price tag of $399 and is geared more for business use rather than for educational purposes.

Gigabyte releases the M912V Atom-powered notebook

by Arnold Zafra on Jul 5, 2008 at 07:03 AM

Gigabyte M912V

Gigabyte has just released the M912V notebook in Taiwan. This tablet style notebook features a touch sensitive swivel LCD panel with a 1280x768 resolution, a 160GB 2.5-inch SATA hard drive,1GB of RAM, an express card slot, a 1.3-megapixel webcam, Wi-Fi, and even has an option for built-in HSDPA support.

The M912V would have been a good competitor to most of the netbooks around if not for its high price. This M912V is expected to retail for around $890 and it will come pre-installed with Windows Vista. Unfortunately for us, there are no words yet as to whether the M912V would be released internationally.

Fresno United School District to receive 7,000 HP Mini-Notes

by Robert Nelson on Jul 2, 2008 at 11:20 AM

HP has announced that they will begin deploying more than 7,000 HP Mini-Note PC’s to K-12 students in the Fresno United School District in California.

“The HP Mini-Note is a powerful laptop that is small enough to fit on students’ desks along with their textbooks and papers, allowing them access to the Internet and educational content from around the world without leaving their seats,” said Kurt Madden, chief technology officer, Fresno United School District.

Certainly a nice perk for students in that district, it seems like they will be given regular access to the computer, which should in turn make them a little more computer literate, especially at the younger ages, but also be able to be used as a tool to aid in their education.

No information was given on what OS these Mini-Notes will be running, or just how they are being spec’d out. I would imagine that the school district would have them running Windows, but if you remember the Mini-Note offers an option to have either Linux or Windows installed.

Hopefully we will see some additional announcements coming from HP.

Rumor: Asus Eee PC 901, 1000H hitting the US on July 8

by Robert Nelson on Jun 27, 2008 at 07:31 PM

Asus has already launched both the Eee PC 901 and 1000H in Taiwan, and have announced a July 1 launch for the UK, but up till now the US release date has remained a mystery.

However, according to an Asus pre-sales department rep, both the 901 and 1000H will become available in the US on July 8. While still not an official announcement it is at least a date to hope for. Of course, this would not be the first time that Asus has had to push a launch date back. Hopefully for their sake they will hit this one, because with the impending launch of the MSI Wind, which is expected to retail for $479, Asus is going to have some competition.
