Optoma Pico Projector PK-101: Project wherever you are

by Jodie Andrefski on Nov 14, 2008 at 09:23 PM

picoprojector
Looking for something that will allow you to have totally portable images for use anywhere?  Check out the new Pico Projector PK-101.  You attach this tiny device (it is smaller and lighter than a mobile phone even!) to either your smart phone (and yes, it works with iPhones too) or media player, and it throws an image onto a nearby screen or white surface.  Pretty cool.  Continued after the break.

Samsung announces the new P3 PMP, successor of P2

by Natesh Sood on Nov 12, 2008 at 09:24 PM

Samsung P3

Samsung recently announced their successor to the P2 PMP, the P3.  The P3 is set to be formally introduced at CES 2009, but they have announced a few details to keep some of their fans excited for the new device.  It is similar to the P2, but does bear several differences.

First, the device measures out at 102mm x 52.7mm x 9.9mm and weighs 85g.  It also comes with a 3-inch WQVGA screen with 480 x 272 resolution.  A nice thing about the P3 is that you will most likely to find the model that fits your needs because it comes in models such as 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, and all the way up to 32GB.  So, whether you just need a small storage device, you can get the 4GB model, or if you have a lot of media, you can get the 32GB.  Continued after the break.

Obama, technology and the future - Part Three

by Christian Milsom on Nov 12, 2008 at 03:03 PM

Barack Obama and his technology position
So far I have looked at two sections of Obama’s policies: an open Internet and his aim for a connected democracy and infrastructure so it comes the turn of the final section: teaching adults and children of the world of technology.

But what does teaching children and adults actually mean?  Let’s first address the children.  The first thing that Obama will put in place is to make teaching Math and Science a priority and although this may not seem like it will affect IT, not only will this have subsequent effects to this industry, but remember that we are talking about technology as a whole, not just IT.  Keep reading for the conclusion of this series.

G10: The latest in the Canon Powershot line

by Jodie Andrefski on Nov 11, 2008 at 09:19 PM

Canon Powershot G10

I’m a firm believer it’s pretty hard to go wrong with a Canon.  So, I was curious to see how the latest in their G-series measured up to its predecessor, the G9.  It seems as though they did pretty well.

Canon’s latest in their Powershot family is the G10.  It has some changes from the G9, although some of the problems that existed with the G9 are still present.  But, if you are looking for a good prosumer camera, without a “pro camera” price tag this one just may fit the bill nicely.

So what separates it from the G9?  Keep reading.

8 GB of music in packaging the size of a matchbox.  Go SanDisk.

by Jodie Andrefski on Nov 11, 2008 at 10:58 AM

sansaclip8gb
And with SanDisk, the hits just keep on coming.  They have the 1GB, the 2GB, the 4GB Sansa Clips, and now the 8GB flash-based player.  It may be teeny-tiny in size, but it certainly isn’t in the capacity of songs this baby can hold.  Try up to 4,000 on it’s rechargeable battery which will run for 15 hours.  Not bad, eh?

The player obviously gets its name from the clip it sports on the back.  It lets users attach it to their clothing, backbacks, etc., which is great for when you are on the go.  However, if you want to detach the clip, you have that option as well.  Another nice thing about the Sansa Clip is that is has an OLED color screen, which lets you pick which songs you want to listen to; you don’t have to listen at random.  More after the break.

Mintpad slips under PMP radar

by Christian Milsom on Nov 10, 2008 at 07:53 PM

Mintpass
PMP (personal media players) are becoming increasingly popular for their versatility and array of features, but less so for their often over exuberant price tag.  So when the new Mintpad from mintpass was unveiled (after a long enough delay for us to wonder where it had gone) for a reported price of around $160 people were instantly interested.

Not only does the price tag attract attention, but the interesting shape and design also draws eyes. Looking like a modern electronic version of a Post-it, it it operated by stylus which instantly creates attractions and problems.  But beside that, on the physical side it is incredibly competitive, with a small sleek design that looks suspiciously like a blend between the Nintendo DS and a square Apple iPod Touch.

Obama, technology and the future - Part Two

by Christian Milsom on Nov 8, 2008 at 01:05 PM

Technology - Obama
Hopefully you all read the first post on President-Elect Obama, technology and the future (if not, it is here) in which I started addressing what Obama’s election means for the world of tech.  Having looked at how Obama will work for an open Internet, I will now delve into Obama’s plans for a connected democracy and infrastructure.

The first thing that Obama has promised to do is to create a more transparent government, a policy that has probably been prompted by the manner in which the Bush administration has been very secretive.  He will attempt to do this by “creating a new level of transparency, accountability and participation for America’s citizens” through the use of technology.  Presumably, this will be done by extensive use of the Internet, as well as other technology such as mobile phones, as shown in the selection of Joe Biden as his second man.

Obama, technology and the future - Part One

by Christian Milsom on Nov 5, 2008 at 03:18 PM

Barack Obama and his technology position

So, the elections are over and Obama has won, but what does this mean for the world of tech?  In the run up to the election, Obama set out his priorities for what he will do in regards to technology if he got into the white house, but how will this affect the average American?

This is the first of a three part series about how the election of Obama will affect the tech world, which fit in to three categories: open Internet, connected democracy and infrastructure, and teaching children and adults.

This year saw technology take a very important place in elections with texts, YouTube and television playing massive parts.  But it was also present in the policies that the two candidates put forward and due to the nature of the massive industry it was a big part.  So what are his policies?  Keep reading.

Roku to get HD Netflix streaming by year’s end

by Indraneel Purohit on Nov 3, 2008 at 01:18 PM

roku hd
In the wake of the Xbox 360 receiving Netflix streaming High Definition, Roku has announced, on their own forums, that they will have HD streaming on Roku boxes before the end of the year.  Roku boxes were, in fact, the first devices to offer the Netflix “Watch Now” functionality, straight to your TV.

On the Roku Labs Forums, “RokuTim” (Tim Twerdahl, VP of Consumer Products at Roku) told the masses that “Roku will be delivering Netflix in HD by the end of the year.“  This is great news for everybody who hopped on the Roku bandwagon early, however he also mentioned that “Roku will be using Advanced Profile encodes which will deliver HD at substantially lower bit-rates than what Xbox is offering.“  Uh oh.  Looks like the Xbox 360 has the upper hand here, and that your Roku HD movies may be a tad on the choppy side.

So is Blu-ray really dead?

by Jodie Andrefski on Oct 29, 2008 at 04:22 PM

rip_bluray
Well, we all knew Steve Jobs’ view of Blu-ray (remember when he described it as a “bag of hurt?“), but it seems he is not the only one who thinks Blu-ray just may be drawing its last dying breaths.  Robin Harris proclaims “Blu-ray is dead” and makes some points that might just make some folks sit back and say hmmmmmm.

Granted, it took a while for DVD to make it into mainstream when it was first introduced, like 5 or 6 years, or so.  You still had diehards hanging on the their VHS.  Heck, I still also own a VHS player.  It’s practically a relic.  So, you have people arguing, give Blu-Ray a break—it’s only been out a year or so.  Continued after the break.
