Sprint offers up over-the-air update for LG Rumor

by Robert Nelson on Jan 30, 2008 at 01:45 PM

LG Rumor users are being encouraged by Sprint to download and install the latest software upgrade. According to Sprint the update will “provide important updates to text messaging and enhance the user experience.“ It will also fix that nasty keypress debug menu issue. Current users can either download and install the update by going to the main menu, settings/tools, tools, update firmware or by visiting a local Sprint retail store. Any new LG Rumor’s should have the latest firmware installed, but it may be wise to go ahead and give it a quick check.

LG Rumor: Debug menu corrected

by Robert Nelson on Jan 3, 2008 at 02:32 PM

The LG Rumor issue has been quickly and quietly corrected. The debug menu issue where the phone was able to be wiped and turned into a paperweight was fixed. Originally thought to have affected all, or at least a great number of LG Rumor’s turned out to only affect a small number of handsets.

It turns out that the Rumor was also never taken off the shelf and sales continued, however the phone itself is just selling so well that they are having a hard time keeping it in stock.

We are pleased to report that sales of Rumor by LG have exceeded our expectations. We knew would be a popular product and had every confidence in it, but the actual sales have far exceeded our projections. For this reason, we are facing inventory issues. We are working closely with our LG partners to get inventory levels back up and are hopeful that this will be available for our customers soon. This inventory issue does impact both colors. Let me also confirm that Sprint did identify a small technical error with this product that impacts a very low percentage of potential customers. A correction was addressed, please note that this issue has in no way impacted our inventory for this product - the two issues are separate and the issue was corrected with a simple fix as it was identified by Sprint. Sprint continues to have every confidence in this device and we are pleased to see such a strong response from our customers. - Michelle

Sprint’s LG Rumor includes debug menu that wipes phone

Sprint LG Rumor DeBug Menu Wipe

It seems that Sprint will be working overtime on a fix for the latest trouble with the LG Rumor. There is some code on the phone that will allow someone to wipe the whole phone, user data and firmware, leaving you with nothing but an expensive paperweight.

The access to the debug menu comes from a set of key presses during the phones boot up process. It is rumored that Sprint has temporarily stopped sales of the Rumor until a firmware update can be sent out, current users can expect an over-the-air update to correct the issue, in the meantime be careful who handles your phone.
