British government loses sensitive data

by Shawn Ingram on Aug 24, 2008 at 09:03 AM

flash drive

Think your government is technologically inept?  If you happen to live in England, you’d probably be more correct than the rest of us.  Sometime last week it seems the British government has lost a flash drive containing data on all 84,000 prisoners in England and Wales and “30,000 people with six or more criminal convictions in the past year.” Theoretically this wouldn’t be such a horrible thing, you’d think a government would have several layers of security on a flash drive in just such a case.  Apparently, this flash drive had none, it was completely unencrypted.

Amazon product page says Windows Vista SP1 to be released tomorrow

by David Gonzales on Mar 17, 2008 at 07:08 PM

Windows Vista SP1 Amazon Leak

Microsoft’s Windows Vista SP1 OS gets an “unofficial” release date via Amazon’s Windows Vista comparison page. Though Microsoft has failed to issue an official statement concerning the said release date, Amazon had this to say:

You can pre-order Windows Vista with SP1 or Windows Vista with SP1 Upgrades now to get SP1 included in the box. Or buy the current versions of Windows Vista now, then update to SP1 online--free of charge--when the new versions are released on March, 18, 2008.

Well, it was bound to be released someday, and it’s already past mid-March so this news shouldn’t come as as a surprise. It always proves interesting to see when another company leaks a release date, lets see if this one holds true.

Palm cuts the antenna from the Treo

by Adam Berger on Jul 7, 2006 at 03:48 PM

Plam Treo Lennon Nitro HollywoodHere are some supposed leaked shots of the next generation of Palm Treo’s. Currently codenamed Lennon and Nitro, the main difference we see here are Treo’s with their antennas cut off to deliver a sleeker form factor. My guess is that these next generation versions add built-in WiFi, a higher megapixel camera (or an option of no camera), have a faster processor, and a few other goodies that probably very few people will use. Previously a image of this new model was taken and dubbed Hollywood, which can be found here. Finally, we expect all future models to be released in both Palm OS and Windows Mobile versions in addition to the possibility of a Linux version too.

Update: We became aware of the following leaked image of a Cingular roadmap showing the Nitro and Lennon for October.

Cingular Treo Palm Roadmap

The Treo Lennon is listed as having UMTS and Class 10 EDGE, a 1.3 megapixel digital camera, WiFi (built-in, one can only hope), and sports Windows Mobile 5.0 with MSFP. Not quite as many details about the Treo Nitro, but it is listed as having a 1.3 megapixel digital camera and appears to be running the Palm OS.
