Asus teases us with a 42-inch LCD TV
During Computex, Asus not only previewed its latest Eee PC line-up but some other forthcoming products as well. One of these products was a 42-inch Eee TV which Asus did not specifically highlight, yet it was seen by attendees on display near the Asustek booth. If you recall, this Eee TV was first seen sometime in January and rumored to be released in September.
Still, the lack of detailed information and specifications coming from Asus make us wonder whether Asus will market this TV as your usual LCD TV or something else more special. Not even the people manning the Asus booth were cooperative enough to leak out details about the Eee TV. And so we are left to ponder about it, albeit suspect other possible details until such time that Asus officially announces it.
Some observers found some USB ports and a LAN input on the TV, while others suspect that it would have web-browsing and email capability. Sadly, until the official announcement and release we can only admire this picture.

LG intro’s two ‘stretched’ display monitors
LG has recently introduced two new LCD display monitors in the UK market. While there may already be a slew of LCD monitors available for UK consumers to choose from, LG’s monitors offer something else which makes them stand out from the LCD lot. For these two new monitors, the 29-inch M2900S-BN and the 38-inch MS3800S-BN, LG has stretched (literally) their screen resolution to 1366 x 480 and 1366 x 398 respectively. Both LCD monitors boast of a 1,000:1 contrast ratio and a response time of 9ms aside from their digital and analogue video input.
According to LG, these two LCD monitors are perfect for exhibiting information in large commercial areas, giving out high picture quality and are able to display horizontal or vertical data in large format and in their full color glory. LG is also giving consumers an easy time in controlling the monitors’ power, contrast, brightness and volume through a single computer when they connect each monitor with cables.
Release date and pricing details are not yet available but like we said, it will be made available to the UK market first.

AU Optronics introduces the Curved Display
In what might be a world’s first, AU Optronics has unveiled its touch-sensitive Curved Display at the 2008 Society for Information Display in Los Angeles. The Curved Display is manufactured by using a special thinning technology and a conventional TFT-LCD process on glass substrate. Sporting a 100mm curved radius, it utilizes a backlight system that is capable of providing a uniform level of brightness and contrast, with no loss in picture quality. AU Optronics hopes to bring its curved display technology to watches and car dashboards. No word on price or availability.
The company also has plans to showcase its ultra-thin 1.9-inch TFT-LCD for mobile devices, which is capable of offering 400nits in brightness. The new thin displays weigh 2.1g and measure a thickness of 0.63mm, 0.06mm skinnier than the company’s previous achievement a year ago. Other technologies AU Optronics will be highlighting are its in-cell multi-touch technology that adds touch functions to the TFT manufacturing process without the need for additional glass and its Grease Free technology that eliminates smudges and fingerprints on touch screens.

NEC to introduce heart-shaped TFT LCD monitors
This may sound ridiculous to some, but NEC is definitely serious about introducing a new line of LCD monitors that could accompany it’s future products. NEC has just announced that it has successfully developed the technology to manufacture a flexible design of TFT LCD panels. And for starters, the company has just manufactured a prototype TFT LCD using this technology to come up with a heart-shaped LCD panel.
The heart-shaped prototype TFT LCD module was formed using two half-circular arcs and two straight lines. It measures 4.0 cms. wide and 3.6 cms. tall with a pixel pitch of 174 micrometers (146 pixels per inch). NEC is set to present this new technology via a symposium on Friday. Until then, we can only wait until NEC successfully manufactures these heart-shaped monitors and has them ready for commercial production.

Samsung shows off its Quad HD 82-inch LCD
If you thought Westinghouse’s 52-inch 2160p Quad HDTV was impressive, check out what Samsung showcased at the 2008 Society for Information Display (SID) in Los Angeles—an industry first, 82-inch Quad HD LCD. Sporting a 3,840 x 2,160 resolution, the massive TV panel utilizes a red/green/blue LED backlight, which results in a 50% increase in color saturation. The new ultra-high definition TV features a 120 Hz refresh rate, which displays an image 120 times per second, effectively doubling the frame rate over today’s 60 Hz standard.
Samsung has not revealed availability details, nor pricing information, but if Westinghouse’s 52-inch 2160p panel costs $50,000, I’m sure Samsung’s 82-incher will cost way more. Likewise, the company says it will also introduce its ultra-high definition 82-inch “e-Board” at SID, which features a touch-sensitive surface that Samsung hopes would replace traditional white-boards.

AUO ultra slim 42-inch LCD TV; thinner, brighter, lighter than competition
We are all familiar with thin flat panel TVs but our perception of thin is about to change. In an industry that continually makes more by giving us less AUO has outdone themselves in the ultra department. I predict that the AUO 42-inch ultra slim LCD TV will draw a lot of attention from both buyers and other industry leaders.
How slim is ultra slim? Imagine the size of an ordinary marble (10mm). How bright is bright? Measured in Nits the 450 is far brighter than the ordinary 250 to 280 Nits found on most LCD TVs. Taking advantage of this increased brightness AUO uses a new technology called “High Dynamic Contrast”. This technology not only provides a contrast ratio of 200,000:1 but it also improves on luminance and uniformity (which simply means that the 16x8 Led blocks do not contrast differently from on the other.)
