Gadgetell Hands On Video Edition: The Microsoft Surface, Part 5

by Robert Nelson on Jun 27, 2008 at 05:29 PM

Bringing the hands on Microsoft Surface coverage to a close, we have the final set which consists of three videos. The first in this group, shows off just a little bit of the movement on the Surface top with the scrolling from side to side and choosing (or launching) the app you want. The remaining two then offer a little but of a behind the scenes look as to how the Surface tracks objects on the table.

Hopefully everyone enjoyed both the images and videos, I also wanted to send a quick thanks to the Microsoft Surface team members for taking time out of their busy schedules to spend some time with us bloggers. I can honestly say that the Surface, while I thought it was neat before, is now something that I cannot wait to get into the home. And don’t forget to check out the previous posts in this hands-on series.

Gadgetell Hands On Video Edition: The Microsoft Surface, Part 4

by Robert Nelson on Jun 27, 2008 at 08:01 AM

Next up we have a set of three videos, each short and sweet, but still offering a nice glimpse of the Surface and its functionality. The first video up offers a quick look at the water-like screensaver that will ripple as you touch it, offering a realistic look that you almost think your hand will get wet when you touch the table top. After that we have a short video of the Paint application and following up last is a quick video of the AT&T interface and some of the cool ways you can manipulate the view.

There are also a few final videos to come later in the day. And don’t forget to check out the previous posts in this hands-on series.

Gadgetell Hands On Video Edition: The Microsoft Surface, Part 3

by Robert Nelson on Jun 26, 2008 at 03:29 PM

Next up in the series of Microsoft Surface hands on videos shows off a little about how the team handles user testing. They demonstrate some unique methods for showing just how they make it clear what is hard and what is easy to do, based on the person (user) doing the testing. Overall it may not be an entirely unique process, but it is, albeit a simple system, much nicer than using an “easy-to-hard” scale such as 1 through 5 or 1 through 10.

There are also still several more videos to come over the next couple of days. And don’t forget to check out the previous posts in this hands-on series. Keep reading to check out the video below for a better understanding…

Gadgetell Hands On Video Edition: The Microsoft Surface, Part 1

by Robert Nelson on Jun 25, 2008 at 04:29 PM

Well we have wrapped up the collection of Microsoft Surface images, and now we can get down with some good videos. The first two videos up are demo’s of some photo applications. One is a photo viewer, while the second takes it a little deeper and mixes photo viewing with geo-tagging and virtual earth maps.

Overall they are both exciting applications on their own. I can see these in a household setting with family or friends gathered around and actually enjoying looking at digital images as opposed to looking at a bunch of images using a slideshow format where everyone is crowded around one display and more than likely just hoping that every image they are seeing is the last so they can sit down and relax again.

The second video, which shows the geo-tagging is really neat to see. It finally gives me a reason to think geo-tagging is (or at least will be) useful. This video is a little longer, but will blow your mind and I would consider it a must watch.

Continue on to check out the videos, there are also still several more to come over the next couple of days. And don’t forget to check out the previous posts in this hands-on series.

Gadgetell Hands On: The Microsoft Surface, Part 5

by Robert Nelson on Jun 25, 2008 at 08:10 AM

The latest in our Microsoft Surface hands on series, brings another set of images. Next in the series we begin with some video, but this set wraps it up with some images of the Surface table top. Mostly just some miscellaneous images, but a few showing off the AT&T interface, along with some testing and some of the tags (stickers) that are used to read the items that are placed in the table tops.

Keep reading to check out the pictures. Also don’t forget to check out the previous posts in this hands-on series.

Gadgetell Hands On: The Microsoft Surface, Part 4

by Robert Nelson on Jun 24, 2008 at 05:00 PM

The latest in our Microsoft Surface hands on series, brings another set of images. This set shows off how they do some of the stress testing on the machine. They are pretty solid and thorough, offering a stress test that runs a bunch of apps and simulates a lot of gestures down to a machine called “Petey” that looks sort of like a CAD table, but is really a fancy finger. They even (as seen below) have a webcam hooked up to “Petey” so they can set up the testing and make sure its running properly from a remote location. While it would not be the most exciting webcam to watch for hours and hours on end, it would still be neat to see, if at least just once to see how it works, but sadly they do not have that open for everyone to check out.

Keep reading to check out the pictures. Once we wrap up the picture part of this series, we also still have some video to show off, one of the videos will be of “Petey” in action. Also don’t forget to check out the previous posts in this hands-on series.

Gadgetell Hands On: The Microsoft Surface, Part 3

by Robert Nelson on Jun 24, 2008 at 11:10 AM

Continuing on with the Microsoft Surface hands on series, here is the latest group of images. These are from the collection of early Surface tables. As you can see, the Surface has come a long way from where it began. It was a neat arrangement to be able to check out. Personally my favorite style was the futuristic Jetson’s looking table, but some others were interesting as well. For example the lighter colored wooden table was actually made from an Ikea table, I guess you could call that a special edition.

The taller, red colored table (stand) was also a really interesting one to check out, built by hand, that table has a slot towards the bottom that a laptop slide in and out of. A laptop you ask, yup, a laptop because that is what happened to power that particular model. You can also clearly see the Dell box sticking out of the Ikea table, just goes to show you how much simpler they were when the project was first coming along. While they would not crack open a new (final) Surface for us to poke around in, I am quite certain that its quite a bit more evolved now.

Keep reading to check out the images, with appologies in advance for some of them being a little dark. Also, don’t forget to check out the previous posts in this hands-on series.

Gadgetell Hands On: The Microsoft Surface, Part 2

by Robert Nelson on Jun 23, 2008 at 04:35 PM

While I am still riding on a slight technology high after all the Surface goodness that I was able to experience last week, lets start showing off some images.

The first set is actually really just a few images, it also happens to be one of the images that I mentioned in my previous Part 1 Hands On post.

The first of the images is, and the man hidden behind the camera is Eric Havir, the Senior Marketing Manager for the Microsoft Surface and this, although simple was possibly my favorite image from the event. While maybe not the best photograph, it just captured what I took as an important message and that was to have fun. The following two images are a nice backdrop and a little sitting area outside their break room with a Surface set up for everyone to use and enjoy. Continue reading to check out the images…
