Verizon’s new World phone, the Motorola Napoleon Q9 shows its face

by Robert Nelson on Jul 4, 2008 at 11:29 AM

Verizon Wireless branded Motorola Q9 Napoleon

It looks like Verizon will be introducing a third variety in their Q9 lineup, and as of now its being code named “Napoleon.” It does however have something special in store for worldwide business travelers as it will not only offer CDMA EV-DO Rev. A support but it will also include full GSM support, meaning you can take and use this worldwide.

The Q9 Napoleon will be running Windows Mobile 6.1 and feature a 320 x 240 display, 2-megapixel camera with flash, Wi-Fi, stereo speakers and ship with a 1500mAh battery. In addition to the added support on the inside, the new world edition Q9 has also gotten a little face lift with a new shiny bezel around the edges.

Also, just good measure they have included a fingerprint scanner on the back, I guess when traveling worldwide you should never have your data unsecured.

As of now, no pricing or release information has been let loose, but as usual we will keep you posted when we find something out.

New details, pictures of the highly anticipated Samsung i900

by Natesh Sood on Jun 5, 2008 at 10:47 AM

Samsung i900

Basically, there hasn’t been a lot of information known about the Samsung i900, just spy shots and some other uninformative pics. However, recently a Chinese website has released some better looking pictures and some more information regarding the Samsung i900.

So far, it is set to come with a 3.5-inch touchscreen display with a 240 x 400 WQVGA resolution, a 5-megapixel camera, quadband GSM, 3G HSDPA with speeds measuring up to 7.2 Mbps, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 16GB of internal hard disk space. All of these specs seem to be really nice and high end, you can’t really find similar specs in normal, average GPS. Additionally, it comes with a 1500mAh battery, microSD expansion, FM radio, runs on Windows Mobile Professional 6.1, 256 MB of RAM, miniUSB 2.0 connection, TV out, and measures out at 4.40 x 2.20 x 0.51-inches.

The $10 pre-paid GSM handset from Hop-On

by Robert Nelson on May 25, 2008 at 05:36 PM

Hop-On $10 HOP1800 GSM handset

The latest low-cost, practically disposable handset to hit the market comes courtesy of Hop-On in the form of the $10 HOP1800. The handset will be available to use worldwide as it will come in two models, the dual-band 850/1900MHz or the 900/1800MHz for Europe and Asia. The HOP1800 is just the handset and will require a local and working SIM card wherever you choose to use the handset. The Hop1800 will offer users up to 4 hours of talk time and 150 on standby.

According to the press release is being marketed as the “perfect iPhone traveling companion” thanks to the cost of “roaming fees going though the roof.” The HOP1800 is currently on the market and being sold just about everywhere to include “retailers such as drug and convenience stores, big box retailers and to businesses looking for a unique branding opportunity.” While the handset itself is selling for $10, Hop-On is also offering a $5 rebate should you choose to return the phone after using it in an effort to “keep it green,” which makes sense because at $10 simply tossing it in the trash after use, aside from filling up the landfills will not be a real loss to your wallet.

AT&T’s black Palm Centro spotted in-the-wild

by Robert Nelson on Mar 28, 2008 at 08:55 PM

AT&T Black Palm Centro In-The-Wild

Just as soon as everyone begins to wonder where the previously announced black AT&T Centro is, we have what appears to be the first in-the-wild sighting.

At least one customer, Brian was able to walk into his local AT&T Store in Salt Lake City, Utah and was able to make a quick and easy exchange with his current white model and walked out with black Centro in hand. So AT&T users and Centro fans who were holding out for the black model may want to head on over or give a call to your local store, you may just get lucky. It could be that AT&T and Palm, having already announced the model, opted for a quite introduction into stores.

Nokia Siemens to upgrade EDGE data speed

by Arnold Zafra on Mar 28, 2008 at 09:18 AM

Nokia Siemens Network

For iPhone and other mobile phone users who rely on EDGE technology to get connected to the web using their mobile phones, the start of Nokia Siemens EDGE Evolution program comes as a welcomed development. Nokia Siemens has announced that as an initial salvo to the EDGE Evolution program, data speeds for GSM/EDGE capable networks will increase to 524kbps. The current EDGE standard for data speed is set at around 262kbps.

Nokia Siemens is set to implement what it calls the Dual Carrier EDGE solution via software upgrade by the third quarter of 2008. So you, iPhone fanatics will have to wait a couple of months more before you get to enjoy the same data speed that 3G-enabled mobile phone users are enjoying right now.

Palm prepping the Centro in more colors?

by Robert Nelson on Feb 24, 2008 at 08:11 PM

Palm Centro in a rainbow of colors

After some digging around in the recently posted user guides, some have turned up a possible rainbow of colors for the Centro. If you follow the guide and click on the AT&T branded white Centro, you will be given a page that shows (pictured above) the rainbow of Centro colors. We have seen the “AT&T only” model, the white with green keys that seems to either be loved or hated, but included in the picture is also the white with the grey keys that we have seen, and previously thought was going to AT&T. In addition there is also a red, black and dark blue model.

We already know that we will see an ”obsidion black” Centro hitting AT&T within a month, but it seems like the other red, dark blue and white with grey could be additional unlocked GSM models. I think if Palm released the Centro in a whole selection of colors, especially with the $99 price tag you would see a whole surge in new smartphone and more important Palm users, could they be on to something?

AT&T Palm Centro in the wild

by Robert Nelson on Feb 16, 2008 at 08:15 AM

AT&T branded white Palm Centro

The AT&T branded Centro has not officially been announced yet, but that is not stopping at least one AT&T retail store from selling the phone anyway. A lucky user over on the Treo Central Forums was able to make the purchase at a Denver retail store. What else is there to do after you purchase an unreleased and unannounced phone, unbox it and post the pictures. We can only assume that the official release will come Tuesday February 19, unless you are also lucky enough to get yours early. As you can also see from the above image, the Centro appears to be running the phone app from the Treo 680. Looking good.
