Dell overtakes HP for highest US sales

by Robert Nelson on Jan 18, 2008 at 09:11 AM

Dell has extended their lead over HP with fourth quarter sales in the US. Dell was able to ship 5.35 million units in the US during Q4 2007, which is a 15.2% increase from the previous year and a 29.6% market share. The second place HP still had a very respectable 4.5 million units sold with 9.8% market share. Coming in third was Acer, who shipped only 1.5 million units, but showed a very impressive 294.2% increase. Acer overtook Apple for the third position, but that could be due in part from the purchase of Gateway.

The increased sales from Dell could be due to their increased direct sale approach in big-box retailers such as Best Buy and Wal-Mart. HP however remained on top for worldwide sales, but that just may change in the coming quarter.
