Free Fridays: Free custom photo book from Snapfish

by JG Mason on Nov 14, 2008 at 08:02 AM

free snapfish photo book thanks to oprah I’d rather not tell you how I found this exclusive deal that will save you $29.99, but I can tell you to thank Oprah.  It seems odd to talk about her again after doing so a couple of weeks ago when she was pimping out the Kindle reader from Amazon.  This time, Snapfish.com was on her show on ways to unclutter your messy home.  Oprah touts getting rid of all your kids artwork and putting them into a keepsake book.

Um, sure Oprah, that is what I am going to do.  Nope, I am half way through making a book from the thousands of images my digital camera took on summer vacation.  Thank God for digital film.

So how do you get your free 8"x11” book free?

Here is the deal:

  • Visit this link.
  • Create an account or log in
  • The credit will be added to your account, so you’ll see it at check out.
  • upload photos, arrange, slap in some text
  • click “order this book”
  • pay shipping.  Sorry, Oprah doesn’t have any connections at the USPS.  Bummer.
  • get book while reveling in the fact you beat the man this one day.

The catch

Sweet, right (aside from paying for shipping)?  You must visit this link and get the coupon added today.  You have up to Sunday to create and order the book.  Not a huge catch, but act now.

I’ve made photo books with Snapfish before and have been happy with the results.  I’ll be even happier not shelling out $30.  A big thanks to Snapfish and Oprah!

RIP - VHS finally dies

by Christian Milsom on Oct 30, 2008 at 07:26 PM

VHSIn much the same way Blu-ray hopes to eventually ‘kill’ the inferior DVD, DVD has finally buried VHS.  “Old news!“ I hear you cry, and yes, I appreciate that the VHS has been facing this impending doom for a while, but the day has finally come where we can officially say that it is a thing of the past.

Up until now JVC, the developers of VHS, have been the only major company to still make standalone VHS players, with companies like Panasonic blaming the obviously empty market for them stopping production.  The last film to be released on VHS, “A History of Violence,“ was released in 2006, completing 30 years of VHS dominated home visual entertainment, which started with “The Young Teacher.“  Continued after the break.

Ready for the world’s first geotagging video camera?  It’s coming.

by Jodie Andrefski on Sep 30, 2008 at 10:16 AM

geotatecamera“Every breath you take…  Every move you make…  Every bond you break…  Every step you take..  I’ll be watching you.“  Is it the end of privacy as we know it?  People knowing where we are, and when we are there, seeing whatever it is we are doing.  Or, just a cool and fun new way to geotag?  Geotagging is nothing new and most of us are familiar with the term by now.  Take a photo, and “tag” your location to tell all your friends or family where you were at when you shot it.  But now, tagged single shots are going to seem like dinosaurs.

Paramount wants you to replace your DVDs with Blu-ray, and they are giving you $10 each to prove it

by Jodie Andrefski on Aug 27, 2008 at 06:20 PM

paramountoriginal

Trying to lure in customers to replace their DVDs or HD DVDs with Blu-rays, Paramount is offering ten bucks per title to do just that. Although Paramount and Dreamwork titles are involved in the offer, it isn’t good for just any Paramount movie.

According to HighDefDigest, the promotion will start with the release of Transformers on Blu-ray coming in just a few days on September 2nd. Hopefully you won’t mind messing up those boxes a bit though, since you need to include the proof-of-purchase tabs from both the DVD and the Blu-ray disk, along with the promotional certificate from inside eligible Blu-ray movies.  You also have to buy your Blu-rays before December 31, 2009 and have your rebate envelope postmarked before January 31, 2010.

Canon 50D; they say she is for real

by Jodie Andrefski on Aug 25, 2008 at 04:26 PM

canon50d

Supposedly confirmed as of a few days ago, however we are still awaiting official word from Canon on their newest baby, due any day now. Complete specs, (translated from Chinese) are here for the time being. Apparently there had been a big bru-ha-ha when a photo hit the internet apparently taken by the new Canon according to it’s metadata (and the info right on the web page itself), on what many believe to be a Media Temple client page. This being a big oops, since they are a web dev for high profile clients such as Sony, Adobe, ABC and others. The others, in some people’s mind’s, could include Canon. Thus, a page that had Canon photos which was leaked onto the net before it was discovered and subsequently password protected.

The Canon 50D is pictured here with what’s sure to be a kit lens option, the EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. A short list of what is most likely going to be key features is as follows:

A new way to punish YouTube offenders

by Christian Milsom on Jun 10, 2008 at 09:21 AM

Most criminals are stupid, but those who video themselves doing the crime and then post it on YouTube are in a whole new league. But to be fair it makes the lives of the police a lot easier as you already have video evidence of not only the person, but the crime committed. So surely moves to punish people for putting these videos on the internet are misguided (as they would then be less likely to put the videos on the internet and therefore making themselves harder to catch).

Anyway, it would appear one Judge has recognized this and come up with a different kind of punishment: where the offender must post an apology for their crime on the internet. Obviously this is not the only punishment that they will receive, but it does go some way as to making the offender look like a fool and to ensure that they lose any ‘respect’ they got for committing and posting the crime in the first place. An innovative punishment, and one that would probably work.

TiVo, Jaman partner to offer more films

by Chris Marshall on Jan 17, 2008 at 08:31 PM

TiVo

If you are a broadband-connected TiVo subscriber and like your American independent and international films, then you are going to be pretty excited about the fact that Jaman and TiVo have teamed up to add content from Jaman’s premier library, featuring films such as,  Oscar-nominated “Paheli,“ “Loverboy” (Sundance) with Kyra Sedgwick, “All About Lily Chou-Chou” (Berlin International Film Festival) and Dardennes Brothers’ “La Promesse” (Cannes/Toronto).

Not your usual TiVo offering, so this is either looking at a niche market or attempting to broaden the viewing preferences of the current subscribers. Described as “high definition, edgy and award-winning films” the deal extends Jaman’s broad cross-platform leadership with support for set-top boxes, PCs, Macs, SanDisk’s TakeTV and DivX.

“We’re delighted to introduce the availability of Jaman to our TiVo subscribers and we think it’ll prove to be an exceptionally popular addition to our already robust broadband offerings,“ said Tara Maitra, Vice President and GM of Content Services at TiVo Inc.  “This joint alliance significantly increases the selection of international and award-winning movies made available to TiVo subscribers, giving them more choices and easy access to premium content not available elsewhere.“

The films will be available for rent or purchase (starting at $1.99) with some free downloads on offer for a number of short and full length films.
