Asus officially announces the Eee Box

Asus has officially let the Eee Box out of the bag, an official press release has been posted on their website, and it gives most of the details. I say most, because in typical Asus fashion, the neglected to mention any release date or price. They were instead nice enough to give us a complete run down on the specs.
The specs were pretty close to the rumored set, so we can only hope the rumored pricing will be just as close, if so we can expect the Eee Box to retail for somewhere around $299. The Eee Box, according to the press release will be running Windows XP Home and powered by a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor. The mini PC will also include 1GB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, 802.11n Wi-Fi, a 10/100/1000 Ethernet port and built-in card reader.
While overall a standard low-cost, low-powered computer it does have a few positive points such as the exclusive Express Gate which promises the ability to “access the Internet, manage pictures, or communicate over IM/Skype just 7 seconds after boot up.“ In addition the Eee Box has a “unique heat dissipation module” which allows for a quiet computer that puts out just 26db of noise.
As we mentioned, the press release left off any mention of an actual availability date, however we expect it to be hitting the market sooner than later.

Asus Eee Box specs, pricing leaked

So far we have seen a fair amount of leaks and rumors about the upcoming Eee Box, everything from specs to the rumored EBOX name. Well, the latest seems to be the complete and official specs along with just how much this little desktop PC is going to set you back.
The pricing, as one would expect will vary slightly depending on the hard drive and RAM options that you choose. A 80GB hard drive with 1GB of RAM and Linux will run you $269, however adding Windows XP to that will up the price by just $30 to $299. A 160GB hard drive with 2GB of RAM and Linux will also set you back $299, no mention was made of a similar spec’d model with Windows XP. The Eee Box will also not include any optical drive, most likely due to the overall small size, which measures in at 8.5-inches x 7-inches x 1-inch.
Other features include:
Asustek will also launch the Eee Station at Computex next week

Ok, what do we know so far regarding Asustek’s plans for Computex next week? First, we learned that Asustek will be launching the Eee PC 901. This was followed by the desktop counterpart of the Eee PC which we later find out will be called the Ebox. Then, just yesterday Asustek hinted on the possible launch of another portable machine, the Eee PC 1000. Just when we are ready to sit down and wait for the Computex, here comes Asustek with yet another big announcement. It will also launch the Eee Station which is not only a powered-up version of the Ebox, but will also be a portable desktop PC with Blu-ray read and write functionality. Incidentally, if the Eee Station looks familiar, that’s because it’s the same as another one of Asustek’s mini desktop PC previously known as the Essention CS5110.
Rumor: Asus Eee Box to debut as the EBOX

While details are still emerging, it looks like it will not be much longer till we see the debut of the Asus desktop PC. The latest of the rumor mill has the desktop model still being announced during Computex on June 3, however instead of the now familiar Eee Box name, it is expected to be called the EBOX. As usual this report is still unconfirmed, but comes courtesy of the Inquirer. Otherwise the previously leaked specs still seem to be holding true, either way in just about a week we should be getting the remaining details when the official announcement (hopefully) comes as expected.
