AOL Openride loads software to your PC, but this time it’s free
AOL is launching OpenRide, a new version of its software that enables simultaneous access to e-mail (including accounts that are from non-AOL domains), instant messaging, Web browsing and searching, and digital media entertainment on one interface (using a four-paned “Quad View” window); the panes change size based on the appropriate activity. AOL say that the program is optimized for broadband use and was designed to enhance a user’s ability to multitask online.
Toasted bread summed it all up:
- Mail Panel: If you have an account with AIM or AOL you can enter directly to it, just clicking on a button in the right part of the program called “Sign in”. AIM accounts are free and have 2GB of capacity and a very good spam detection system. The program also tells you if you have new mail. You can also see any account which has POP3 access.
- Explorer panel: Tabbed browsing, search-panel, etc. The only problem: it is based on Internet Explorer, although with the new BETA7, it goes really smooth.
- AIM Messenger: If you have an AIM account, then it will be really useful. You won’t have to open a new program for the Messenger.
- Media Panel: You can hear Music on the AOL Internet Radio -free-, search your files in your computer, etc.

AOL is free for all, changes their line to “You’ve got ads”
AOL has announced that its software and Email, as well as various other products will be made available for free to broadband users, just like everyone previous predicted. This will allows the company to maintain a high level of advertising revenue, a profit center that was in danger because of the decreasing subscriber base.
If you have a broadband internet connection you can get AOL’s software, AOL Email, instant messaging, a local phone number with unlimited incoming calls, social networking applications, and safety and security features, such as parental controls all for free. AOL is also trying to push AOL video and offering a personalized e-mail address: you@thenameyouwant.com—all for free. Finally, the company has unveiled plans to release a new version of software (it is unclear if it is the next version of what we know as the AOL portal or a new product) that is a “breakthrough” four-pane design that will, “revolutionize the way you use the Internet.”
Now aren’t you glad you spend $24.99 a month for the past 11 years?!?!
