Vizio launches Connected HDTV platform, brings Netflix, Amazon, Pandora, more to HDTV’s
Posted January 8, 2009 at 12:31 PM by Robert Nelson
Section: Video, Content, HDTV, Video Providers

Vizio has recently announced the new Connected HDTV platform and with it comes options to stream content from numerous providers. The services are numerous, as as one would imagine Netflix is one of those content providers, however in addition users will also have access to content from Amazon OnDemand, Blockbuster OnDemand, Pandora, Rhapsody, Flickr and more.
To begin using the service, simply connect your Vizio Connected HDTV-enabled TV to your home network and begin to enjoy the available content. As of now an exact release date was not mentioned other than that Vizio plans to have these in the stores “later this year.“ No word yet on what the cost will be for the Connected HDTV models. Personally, this sounds like a great platform, it offers numerous content providers and is all done without adding numerous other set-top boxes and further cluttering up your home entertainment center.

Immersion showing off the expansion of haptics at CES
Posted January 8, 2009 at 10:02 AM by Shawn Ingram
Section: Communications, Gadgets / Other, Miscellaneous, Trade Shows, CES
With the dawn of the latest generation of smartphones, especially ones geared towards everyday people who might not need them, one thing is clear: touch screens are becoming almost a new industry standard. Look at the iPhone, BlackBerry Storm, G1, LG Dare, and HTC Fuze among others. Sure, some have keyboards as well, but aside from inputting text, users seem to love everything about touchscreens.
Immersion, the company behind the haptic screen on the Voyager, LG Dare, and Samsung Instinct is putting on quite the display at CES. Possibly the coolest of these is the inclusion of Immersion’s haptic controls inside of a car. Presumably it will mainly focus on in-car controls such as A/C, heat, stereo and whatnot, but it is certainly a welcome idea.
Immersion is also announcing its technology is being used in a new digital media player, which will be the first to include haptics according to the company. The company will also announce that its technology will be ready for use by the Open Handset Alliance for implementation in the Android platform.
The difference between haptics and other touch screens such as those in the iPhone, is that haptic technology allows for tactile feedback. The preference is mainly personal, some people prefer to actually feel like their pressing a button on the screen, and others don’t care so much as long as there’s visual feedback. But, either way, haptic controls are a welcome addition to any device, and should be a good thing for Android and other systems that use them.

CES 2009: Monster announces Turbine In-Ear speaker headphones
Posted January 8, 2009 at 06:00 AM by Natesh Sood
Section: Audio, Accessories, Headphones, Home Audio, Portable Audio, Speakers, Trade Shows, CES

Headphones are very important nowadays especially with the emergence of PMPs and MP3 players being so popular. There are many headphone manufacturers out there, and so knowing all the facts and perhaps even testing out headphones before purchasing them is always the safe way to go. Let’s take a closer look at Monster’s newest headphones, the Turbine.
Speakers always sound better than normal headphones because the device is a lot bigger and can provide deep, rich sounds. Monster decided to call the Turbine In-Ear speakers because they believe the quality of their headphones are nearly speaker-like. The Turbine was designed by Noel Lee, head of of Monster. In fact, he spent three years conducting research, playing with prototypes, and perfecting the design for their launch. He wants these to be the headphones that all people wanted.
The Turbine headphones boast 8mm drivers that were created to deliver high quality sound, detail, bass, and clarity normally found in speakers. Again, one of Monster’s main goals was to make these headphones exactly like a good speaker system. Monster also created several eartips in order to ensure good sounds, keep out unwanted noise, and have a comfortable fit.
Noel Lee, Head of Monster, had this to say about the headphones he designed:
“Life is too short to listen to bad headphones. Unfortunately, ordinary headphones simply can’t reproduce the deep bass and rich highs of full-size speaker systems. Monster is on a mission to make headphones sound better, and our new Turbine In-Ear Speakers allow people to hear truly remarkable sound from in-ear headphones. Hearing is believing. After all, the human ear can discern much more than any technical measuring device, and the performance of Monster Turbines needs to be heard to be believed.”
No word on when these are set to retail, but the MSRP is $149.95.
Sharp’s offering the combo deal: AQUOS LCD + Blu-ray

Section: Video, DVD/DVR/Blu-ray, HDTV, Trade Shows, CES
Throwing caution to the wind, Sharp is making the move to sell us their TVs combined with a Blu-ray player - meet the AQUOS BD series. Their thinking is with fewer dollars in our pockets, we’ll want one simple combo, just like at your favorite fast food joint. Any problems with this approach?
Yes. Despite Sharp’s insistence that Blu-ray is making inroads in leaps and bounds, I don’t see it. Consumers like me are having trouble justifying the added benefit of a finite amount of clarity. And even when they are, there is the specter of another format that we’ll just have to have over the horizon. For comparison, who wants to be driving around with an 8 track player in their car not trying to look ironic?
Low dollar winsUsing their logic, if I am strapped for cash making the purchase amount higher doesn’t help. One step at a time big guys. Will consumers see value in buying both an LCD and Blu-ray together at the same time or will most consumers make a one stop, two step purchase: first the TV then the player? My money is on the purchase in parts.
The AQUOS BD series will come in 32, 37, 42, 46, and 52 inch versions. Pricing and availability will be released in February, so we should know soon enough.

Sling introduces SlingGuide

Section: Video, DVD/DVR/Blu-ray, Portable Video, Video Providers, Trade Shows, CES

Sling just introduced “SlingGuide” which works with Dish DVRs. Echostar owns both companies and now their products are working together. After you hook up your Dish DVR to a broadband connection, you can access your DVR through the web using SlingGuide for free. You can see live programming, schedule recordings, and find new shows.
Sling touts the ability to find new movies and shows by doing searches of the actors. The SlingGuide has a list of favorites which you can search.
If the DVR is “SlingLoaded” or connected to Slingbox, you can watch video through your SlingMedia software like you normally could. This also works with iPhone or iPod touch and turns these Apple products into a super-remote with the ability to view a program guide along with regular remote control functions.
This was a long time coming. This could make Dish seem like a more attractive option to those who want things to work well.

Garmin announces new service of map updates for life
Posted January 8, 2009 at 04:08 AM by Natesh Sood
Section: Gadgets / Other, GPS/Navigation, Trade Shows, CES
I’m sure many of you own a GPS, because they have rapidly become very popular. Now, whether you own a Garmin GPS or not, I’m not sure, but if you do, you’ll be pleased to know that they announced a new map service at CES.
The announcement in a nutshell is that Garmin made it so that if you paid one payment, you will receive map updates for life. Dubbed the nüMaps Lifetime Program, you will get new POI’s, streets, and addresses, whenever they are made available which is every quarter. After you make the initial payment, which I’ll cover in more detail in a moment, you will receive e-mail updates when a new map is available to download. All maps are provided by NAVTEQ.
Dan Bartel, Garmin’s VP of Worldwide Sales, had this to say about their nuMaps Lifetime service:
“Having the most current and up-to-date maps help our customers get the most out of their satellite navigation device. With nüMaps Lifetime, access to the latest maps is just a few mouse clicks away. For just one single fee, our customers can be certain they’re traveling with the most current maps.”
Now, the nuMaps Lifetime program is available in three different versions based on where you live:
nüMaps Lifetime is available in three different versions:
* City Navigator® North America NT ($119.99) * City Navigator Europe NT ($139.99) * City Navigator Transatlantic ($149.99)
Lastly, as long as your GPS works, you will always receive the map updates, unfortunately, if you sell your GPS, or it breaks, you lose your service. To get this service, you need a USB cable and a high-speed Internet connection, which I’m sure many of you already have. The service will be made available on January 21 of this year and if you want to learn more about this or check it out, be sure to hit up their CES booth.

The Beats Tour by Monster, Jimmy Lovine, and Dr. Dre
Posted January 8, 2009 at 03:35 AM by Natesh Sood
Section: Audio, Accessories, Headphones, Home Audio, Portable Audio, Trade Shows, CES
At the Monster Liveblog, one of the new products they announced was the Beats Tour. At the time of the liveblog, not much was known about the tour, but we got our hands on a press release, so let’s take a closer look at the Beats Tour by Monster, Jimmy Lovine, and, of course the man himself, Dr. Dre.
The newest addition to the Beats by Dr. Dre headphones are the Beats Tour, which are like in-ear speaker headphones. In addition, they are currently available at leading retails such as Apple, In Motion stores, Best Buy, Fry’s Electronics, Apple.com, Amazon.com, and beatsbydre.com. To gain some more recognition of the Beats Tour headphones, Dr. Dre and Jimmy Lovine plan to hold a private listening session at CES, in which you get the opportunity to give them a listen.
The Beats Tour hopes to further reduce external noise, be able to produce deep bass sounds, have superior audio quality, and overall deliver the full, rich sound put into every song. They also come with three custom-fit ear tips to ensure a comfortable fit and to block out more external noise. In addition, the headphones are capable of delivering the best sound when it comes to R&B, Rock, and Hip-Hop, which can sometimes be hard on headphones. To ensure this, Dr. Dre made sure they worked exactly as he imagined.
The wires on the headphones use Monster’s exclusive Tangle Free Cable, that will never tangle up when you pack up the headphones or use them. Lastly, Dr. Dre had this to say about the Beats Tour:
“Artists and producers work hard in the studio perfecting their sound, but people can’t really hear it with normal headphones. Most headphones can’t handle the bass, the detail, the dynamics. Bottom line: the music doesn’t move you. With Beats, people are going to hear what the artists hear and listen to the music the way they should – the way I do.”
They sell for $149.95 and come with a carrying case for your convenience.

Hands on with the HP Mini-Note 2140
Posted January 8, 2009 at 02:52 AM by Robert Nelson
Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Laptops

Walking the show floor tonight at Digital Experience we were able to chat with a rep from HP and get some hands-on time with the new HP Mini-Note 2140. The 2140 is the follow up to the existing Mini-Note 2133 and seems to have improved on anything that was lacking on the 2133, while keeping all of the good.
Just to give you an idea, the display size has been increased from the original 8.9-inches up to a nice (and what I consider usable) 10-inches. The near full sized (92%) keyboard remains the same as do the ports and connectivity options. One noticeable difference is the speaker placement, which moves them from the left and right of the display to below it. That move allows for the extra room to accommodate the slightly larger display.
Another nice point, which may only affect those looking to upgrade from a 2133 is that the battery is interchangeable between models. Similar to the 2133, the 2140 is available with either a 3-cell or 6-cell battery. It was also mentioned that we can expect to see a better battery life on the 2140 as compared to the 2133, which based on my use with the 2133 was already pretty good.
Finally, and perhaps the change that I am most excited to hear about is in regards to the processor, gone is the VIA C7M and in comes the more netbook familiar Atom.
Microsoft, Ford add GPS, real-time traffic to SYNC service

The president of Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division, Robbie Bach, announced today that the company and Ford are updating SYNC. SYNC was announced at last year’s Consumer Electronics Show and is touted as a mobile entertainment and communication platform for your mobile devices and digital audio players. Later this year, the companies are adding real-time traffic and location information into the mix as well. In addition, users’ customizations will now stay with them when they move from SYNC car to car. Apparently the new real-time services will be free for the first 3 years, but are going to cost you beyond that time frame. No word yet on what those subscription fees will be like.
The updated SYNC features will launch later this year on “select 2010 models” of Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles, and will hit all of their autos by 2011.
· SYNC with Traffic, Directions and Information provides personalized, real-time information to help drivers get to where they’re going with information they need. New services come with no monthly subscription fees for the first three years.
· Users’ customizations stay with their phone and can be used in other SYNC-equipped vehicles and can be upgraded free as new services are available.
· New features launch later this year on select 2010 models and will roll out across the entire Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury lineup by 2011.
· SYNC sales expected to top 1 million in 2009.

The beta will be available beginning in English, German, Japanese, Arabic or Hindi and each (except Hindi) language version will be available in both the 32 and 64-bit version. Hands on: MotoSurf touchscreen phone
Posted January 8, 2009 at 01:58 AM by JG Mason
Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile
Tonight I got some one on one time with the just announced MotoSurf from Motorola. Lately, I’ve berated Moto for being slow in developing new, relevant devices. For example, Moto was proudly showing off the Aura $2k+ phone they announced just a couple of weeks ago, plueeez! Earlier this week, I noted interest in this phone destined only for Asia and Latin America and after playing with it, it still holds my interest.
The phone is quite light. The parts that look like metal are all plastic. While this makes for a light phone, it also reduces a solid feel in the hand. And it is real small.
The phone runs Windows 6.1 but is skinned to make the user experience better than your average unskinned WinMo smartphone. The skin wasn’t real thick but seemed to be responsive.
Currently all the applications are written by Motorola for the phone. The company spokesperson could not comment on if an SDK was in the works, though I think not.
As I said earlier in the week, Moto isn’t so sure about this phone. Not launching in the US market is proof positive of this position. The rep was careful to point out she could not comment on a US release.
I mean, come on, the phone has a stylus, need I say more?
That said, I’d like to see where Moto takes this and where it is priced at, pricing for Asia and Latin America is not available yet.

A new multiple routing feature customers can see a map preview of the proposed fastest route, shortest route and off road route prior to choosing to navigate it. Sounds like Garmin has another hit on its hands.
The Zumo 660 features Garmin Lock, a 4-digit PIN security program that renders the unit inoperative for an incorrect answer. We can expect the Zumo 660 in Q1 of this year for $799.99.
New in Windows Live Mail: Search for and insert address info into emails

At Steve Ballmer’s CES keynote, an innovative feature was introduced for Windows Live Mail. Here’s the situation: you’re meeting up with a bunch of friends for dinner and you need to send out the name of the restaurant, address, and link to a map to them. Currently, this takes a bunch of steps: 1) do a local search on your favorite search engine, 2) click on the link to the correct restaurant, 3) copy / paste it into the email. What the new feature in Windows Live does is allow you to search from within the compose screen of your webmail. Then, instead of having to copy / paste, you just click the link that says “insert”, and it throws the map link, rating, etc. right into the body of the email message.
Why didn’t Google think of this?
New products unveiled by Targus for 2009-January 8
Posted January 8, 2009 at 01:30 AM by Heather Wood
Section: Computers, Laptops, Trade Shows, CES
In the past, Targus was known for their functional and easy to use notebook cases. As a way to stay competitive, the company plans to release a line of more fashionable notebook cases. This includes models: Intersection, Echoes, Rio and Madrid. For travelers, the Venture will make going through airport security with your laptop a cinch. Other planned products from the company include a line of cooling accessories for notebooks.
One of the main trends in notebook cases is a streamlined look. Users don’t want to carry around a bulky bag. This is why it’s expected that the Intersection will be a very popular choice. This slim case will come in three different styles: backpack, slipcase, and slip attaché. If you’re concerned about protecting your notebook, then you may want to choose the backpack. This model comes with extra foam lining.
The Echoes notebook case has more style and color choices than the Intersection. This fashionable rippled style bag is available in black, gray, and teal. Besides the backpack, slip attaché, and slipcase, the Intersection has a Netbook slipcase style available.
For buyers looking for leather cases, you can select Targus’ Madrid or Rio models. The Madrid is fashioned out of black genuine leather with a magnetic enclosure as well as additional padding in order to avoid damaging your notebook. The Rio has similar features, but also comes in white leather.
Although the notebook cases will look better, they will still obtain Targus’ signature checkpoint friendly design. Carriers of the Venture will simply need to flip open the top in order to pass through airport security. The design separates the laptop in order to provide a clear view on x-ray machines. The Venture fits notebooks with screen sizes 15.6” and lower and comes in black, tan, or navy.
So, what else is new from Targus? The company also plans to launch a line of cooling accessories for notebooks. Overheating is a common problem for laptops and Targus hopes these products will prolong the life of the user’s notebook. The three new cooling products include: the Chill Mat, Chill Mat XC, and Coolwave. The Chill Mat uses dual USB powered fans to keep the laptop cool while the XC version will allow users to control the fan as well as an integrated 4 port USB hub. The CoolWave is a stand that has been designed to maximize airflow around your laptop in order to avoid overheating.
Targus plans to unveil the new line at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. They will be made available to the public in the spring of 2009.

iPod touch faces stiff competition from this upstart: GiiNii Movit

I didn’t see this coming, though I should have. The iPod touch has found a competitor thanks the the ecosystem that presented the first real challenge to the iPhone, Android. Electronic gear maker GiiNii, whom I had not heard of until tonight showed me a prototype of a mobile entertainment device running Android with a 4.3” screen. This could get real interesting, here is why.
This thin device features connectivity through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, which one ups the Touch. Skype not only becomes a possibility but a reality as long as your in Wi-Fi range. I chatted with a company exec who said they are not putting too much thought into equiping the device with a sim card just yet. They want to keep the devices simple and are working hard to do that.
CameraOh how many times have I wished my touch had a camera. While the prototype I fondled had one, they’ve not decided on a Megapixel size yet. This feature is a big selling point.
EcosystemOne of the big advantages of the iPod is the App Store. With Android, there are many useful applications and more coming. And being open source, anyone can write an application specifically for the device. Exciting.
Price and DistributionI’ve learned to ask questions the company reps can’t answer. One such question was price. The rep groaned, not wanted to give me the answer on his tongue; but I broke him and he fessed up: “much less than the iPod touch.“ You’ve got to figure they are not paying for the open source OS so there is a possibility he is right. GiiNii currently sells some of their product through the mighty Wal-Mart and hinted this may end up there too.
Excited yet? They expect a release in Q3 (according to the company rep) and have a 7” screen version in the works. I’ll be watching.

Last year we saw Panasonic launch a 150-inch Plasma TV. This year they’re talking up their new 3D 1080p HDTV. The first 3D Blu-ray won’t be launched until 2010, so there’s still a lot of work to go to perfect the concept. The company mentioned that they are working with famous director / producer James Cameron on his future film Avatar on the 3DHD elements.
Head over to the Panasonic Live-blog for some of their other new products.
