Bills USB flash drive protects your data with a combination lock
Posted February 9, 2010 at 05:10 PM by Cheng Hung
Section: Peripherals, Storage
Designer Yun Hwan Sung came up with a concept USB flash drive called the “Bills USB” (Bills as in Bill Gates?). Ditching the whole idea of encryption, Yun opted for a combination a lock instead. The USB connector remains hidden and retracted until you get the right combination to unlock it. That is a pretty neat idea, but the USB drive seems to be a little too big for me. Some people may find the size to be just right; it won’t get lost easily. It would’ve been better if the drive had some sort of software-based encryption built into it as that would provide double protection for your important data!

iPhone, now an SD card reader

Section: Audio, Portable Audio, Video, Portable Video, Communications, Accessories, Smartphones, Mobile

Today, zoomMediaPlus announces the zoomIt, a SD card reader dock for iPhone and iPod touch. The attachment allows the Apple products to access data on an SD card and share this data to and from the SD card. The unit will be available in April and will sell for a reasonable $59.99.
Whether it’s giving your digicam images a way to get to Facebook or Flicr or off-loading your iPhone’s images, even casual photographers should see great benefit in this product. Made to work with all memory levels of iPhones and iPod touch SDK 3.0 and above devices, the zoomIt will allow access to iPhone OS file types including photos, music, videos, and documents (.PPT, .XLS, .DOC, .PDF, etc.). Users can forgo connecting to a computer to get access to their images and just connect to their iPhone or touch.
“We’re excited not only by what zoomIt does for user-generated content but by what it can also do to create alternative methods of content distribution other than optical CD/DVD and downloadable,” said Richard Sfeir, CEO, zoomMediaPlus. “With the iPhone and iPod touch being the dominant portable multimedia platform, we’re excited about enabling preloaded content on SD cards to give the industry and consumers new ways to distribute and consume protected content.”
Currently, protected content such as licensed movies, music and images will be supported in a future release. The zoomIt team is working doubly hard to make that a reality as the company believes it can follow in the honored footsteps of Slot Music and the like for content sales on a SD card. Sweet. I kid here but the ability to load up several movies on a card for say a long flight would be welcome, especially to users who opted for an 8GB device.
Pre-orders are being accepted now.

Bad Kitty app launches, brings another Twitter client to webOS devices
Posted February 9, 2010 at 02:56 PM by Robert Nelson
Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile
In my recent quest to learn and use webOS as much as possible, one of the must have apps on my handset is Twitter related. So far I have checked out Twee as well as Tweed and settled in using TweeFree. As a side note, I am using the free version of Twee simply because I am using a review handset and do not want to pay for apps.
Anyway, in my searching I discovered that another Twitter app has recently launched for webOS devices. The app is called Bad Kitty and will work on either the Pre, Pre Plus, Pixi or Pixi Plus. Basically it will work on all webOS devices that are running 1.3.1 or later.
I will say that the app itself has gone untested by me personally, again because of the price. It is selling for what seems to be a reasonable $2.99, but again, I am on a review phone.
Feature wise, the Bad Kitty app is listing as having support for multiple Twitter accounts, auto-refresh with background notifications, image previews, list support and the ability to choose your font-size. Of course, these are in addition to the normal features that you would expect to find in a Twitter app such as posting tweets, checking your timeline, replies and messages. Additionally, the app is using oAuth to authorize your login, which means you are not sharing your Twitter password with anyone other than Twitter.
All things considered, Bad Kitty seems to be a nice alternative, and who knows, should I decide to get a webOS phone in the future I will have to check it out.
To download the Bad Kitty app on your webOS device, just visit http://bit.ly/badkitty.
Finally, I did find a nice video walkthrough of the Bad Kitty Twitter app on YouTube, which you can check out below…

T-Mobile’s BlackBerry trackball replacement program delayed

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile
Late last month we mentioned that T-Mobile was preparing to offer a trackball replacement program for select models of the BlackBerry Pearl and Curve, and sadly this latest post is to let you know that the program launch has been delayed.
Thankfully though the delay is fairly short, well, fairly short assuming your trackball is not completely messed up. Anyway, the program was originally expected to kick off on February 15, 2010, but has now been pushed back until February 24.
Basically, its a one week delay. And just to recap, this trackball replacement program is going to be open for T-Mobile customers that are using the BlackBerry Pearl 8100 or 8120 or a BlackBerry Curve 8320.

Palm Pixi Plus now free on-contract with Wirefly

I will say that since having received the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus review units—I am enjoying using the Pixi Plus quite a bit more than I originally expected. Given that I started to search around trying to find the best price available. Well, it seems that depending on where you shop, the Palm Pixi Plus can be purchased for $49.99 or even free. Both of those are on-contract of course, and they are also much nicer than the current price that you will pay directly with Verizon. Getting right down to the best price scenario, the free offer comes courtesy of Wirefly, which also throws in free shipping. The $49.99 offer is coming by way of Amazon. The nice part with both of these deals is that the prices shown are after instant discounts, which means no messy mail-in-rebates to worry about. And just for those keeping track, the Pixi Plus is currently selling for $99.99 directly with Verizon.

LG and Samsung to roll out first 3D TVs next month
Posted February 9, 2010 at 11:19 AM by Cheng Hung
Section: Peripherals, Displays/Projectors
Both Samsung and LG, the two giants of flat-screen TV manufacturers, will be releasing 3D TVs starting next month. Samsung will launch its LED 9000 LCD featuring a powerful 3D processor, while LG rolls out LED LCDs with sizes ranging from 32” to 55” (Infinia LE9500). Competition in the 3D TV industry is certainly strong as LG stressed that it will be the industry leader in 2011, selling 3.4 million units. Samsung’s forecasted figures are just a humble 2.6 million, which is not too far behind LG. With such intense competition, I do hope that it will lead to lower prices of 3D TVs.

Google to introduce potential Twitter/Facebook competition
Posted February 9, 2010 at 10:02 AM by Hunter Clarke
Section: Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking, Google
Google’s Gmail has been the king of e-mail for several years now. But new means of communication through social networks such as Twitter and Facebook have eliminated a lot of the social communication that e-mail once had. Let’s all be honest it’s 10x easier to DM your friend on Facebook and Twitter because you are already on them and it doesn’t require you to look at all of the work in your inbox.
However, it has now been reported that Google plans to try and win back that social aspect that e-mail used to have. A new plugin for Gmail will implement an interface similar to your Facebook news stream or Twitter stream, containing updates about people they choose to connect with. This stream, I assume, will contain various types of status updates directly from the users, as well as the updates from various other Google services such as Picasa and Youtube.
This new update’s success really all depends on if people will be willing to mix work with pleasure again. E-mail inboxes have notoriously become a pain to filter through and trying to now make a “fun” experience out of it is like your parents telling you to make a game out of cleaning your room when you were little.
As for me, I’ll probably use it. And since Google already owns all of my contacts as well as just about everything on the web, I figure handing them my social life is no big deal.

Motorola Droid to receive Android 2.1 upgrade this week

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Google
Motorola chose to announce some pretty exciting information via Facebook earlier today. Rather than issuing a formal press release, Motorola has stated the Motorola Droid will be receiving an Android 2.1 upgrade sometime this week. Unfortunately, it is not known whether all Droid users will be lucky enough to upgrade to 2.1. Motorola plans to have additional announcements about other software upgrades later this month as well. We will keep you updated when our Droid receives the upgrade, or when we hear about other users receiving it. Android 2.1 is the version of the Android platform the Google Nexus One smartphone runs on, so it has been available for quite some time.
According to Engadget, the 2.1 upgrade for the Droid will include a multitouch browser, pre-installed Google Goggles and upgraded news and weather widgets. However, no animated wallpapers nor 3D app icons will be featured in the upgrade. Check out Motorola’s Facebook message below.
Motorola: Hi all—we know you are frustrated with the lack of details regarding Android software upgrades and we sincerely apologize for not being able to share info sooner. We’re happy to relay the 2.1 upgrade to DROID will start to roll out this week, and we will have more information to share on other device upgrades later ...this week as well. Thanks for your patience and continued support.

Google lowers ETF on Nexus One
Posted February 9, 2010 at 07:41 AM by Shawn Ingram
Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Google
The Nexus One is a strange device. It is the only cellphone of any kind that has two Early Termination Fees, one from the carrier (currently only T-Mobile), and one from Google itself. That alone was enough to get the FCC asking Google about why it charges an ETF for the Nexus One. We haven’t yet seen those answers, but we do know that Google has responded in another way.
Before today, the Nexus One came with a $350 ETF from Google, what it calls an “Equipment Recovery Fee,” that went into place within the first 120 days of ownership. Without saying a word, Google today updated the Terms of Sale for the Nexus one, cutting the ETF by $200 to $150. That fee still comes on top of the $200 ETF from T-Mobile. That’s $350 if you buy a subsidized Nexus One, which will cost you $179 to begin with. So, with going by that idea, the Nexus One will cost $529, the same price it would cost you to buy one unlocked and use as you wish.
It’s still unclear why Google would even charge for the Equipment Recovery Fee, and hopefully we will get an answer sometime soon. Until then, it makes more sense to just buy the phone unlocked and get any plan you could want. Given the way many have been talking about it, the price might just be worth it.

HTC Legend pictures surface, looks pretty much like previously released renders

Finally, some real photos of the HTC Legend have surfaced. They look pretty similar to renders which were previously released. It looks like the Legend will sport a pretty durable build, as can be seen from the back photo. The aluminum-like exterior looks like it will be very comfortable and solid when held in the hand. The area around the camera and flash looks incomplete, as expected from a pre-production build. From the looks of the dots, it probably houses speakers or video recording mics. While nothing has been confirmed yet, it seems to use the Sense UI which is a pretty sweet choice.

Inbrics to reveal Android-based M1 MID at MWC

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Gadgets / Other
The folks over at Pocket-lint scooped up some really interesting info about the upcoming announcement of Inbrics’ Android-based M1 MID, scheduled to be revealed at the Mobile World Congress next week.
The M1 is really a little bit of everything. It is a “smartphone-like device” sporting a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen display, a 3-megapixel camera and a front-facing VGA camera (probably for video calls). It also has a slide-out 5-row QWERTY keyboard. Other specs are GPS, 16GB of internal flash memory and a microSD card slot. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G or WiMAX. Inbrics aims to make the M1 a media controller as well. It sees media convergence from TVs, DVRs, mobile phones, digital cameras, laptops and desktops, where the M1 MID acts as the controller that pushes data to any device the customer chooses.
If all goes well, the MID M1 will be introduced in Europe in 2010, or early 2011.

BenQ launches world’s slimmest LED monitor
Posted February 8, 2010 at 02:44 PM by Cheng Hung
Section: Peripherals, Displays/Projectors
BenQ’s V2220 21.5” LED LCD monitor seems to have bagged many world titles, from the “world’s slimmest” to the “world’s highest dynamic contrast ratio.” Boasting a thinness of only 15mm, the monitor is also very green. Power consumption is reduced by 28.6% compared to traditional CCFL models. When you switch to Eco mode, it further saves power by up to 52%. Not only does it help you save electricity, it is also very environmentally-friendly.
The dynamic contrast ratio is very, very high as compared to mainstream monitors. At a dynamic contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1 (that’s 10 million to one), it can display truer blacks and give you a more detailed display in darkly lit areas. The V2220 is scheduled for a Taiwan launch in February and March, along with the 18.5” and 24” models. The 23” model will be launched in June. The products will then be available worldwide. No words on the pricing, though.

The EeeTop ET1610PT is really nothing to shout about; other specs include an Intel Atom D410 processor, integrated Intel GMA X3150 graphics, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, six USB ports, a 5-in-1 card reader, 0.3-megapixel webcam and an Ethernet port. It doesn’t come pre-installed with a Windows 7, though. Asus somehow decided to include Windows XP with this nettop. You can, of course, upgrade it to Windows 7 by buying it yourself. It should be coming to Europe soon, with a price tag of under 400 Euros ($540)

Gadgetell is looking for a few bloggers, apply now to join the team
Posted February 8, 2010 at 12:00 PM by Robert Nelson
Section: Features, Gadgetell Announcements
Listen up, Gadgetell is looking for a few quality tech/gadget bloggers, well more specifically we are looking to fill two positions.
The first being someone who can contribute often, and by often I mean on a daily, or at least an almost daily basis to include weekdays and weekends. I would say this person would average roughly 10 posts per week.
The second being someone who wants to write primarily on the weekends. Of course, anyone who fills this role will be welcomed to post during the week. But the main focus is for weekend coverage. This person would most likely average about 4-6 posts per weekend.
Assuming you are ok with those roles and posting expectations—we need someone who loves tech/gadgets. You know the type—the person who loves tech so much that other people get tired of hearing them talk because that is all they talk about. Or the person who sits at the dinner table with a laptop, tablet or smartphone because they cannot part with the Internet for even a few minutes. In short, we are looking for the tech obsessed.
If you are interested, here is what you need to do to apply. Send an email to robert (at) gadgetell (dot) com and include;
* For new bloggers, three sample posts that would fit on Gadgetell. Don’t worry they will not be used, but we want to see what you are capable of. * For experienced bloggers, show us some links to other writing that you have done. These should be relevant to tech/gadgets and should also be current.
Also tell us a little about you, what you currently do, how much time you can realistically dedicate to Gadgetell and why you think you would be a good fit. And make sure you let us know how to get back in touch with you just in case we like what you submit.
And yes these are paid positions.

Google Contacts, otherwise known as my first big issue with the Palm Pre Plus, and a simple fix
Posted February 8, 2010 at 10:53 AM by Robert Nelson
Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Websites, Google, Features, How To
The folks at Verizon Wireless were kind enough to send me a Palm Pre Plus and a Palm Pixi Plus to play with for a little while. And because of them sending out a few review units, I will in-turn be able to offer some hands-on posts about my use and experience as well as answer any questions that you may have.
That said, being a Google fanboy user, the first thing that I did upon receiving the phones were to install gDial Pro (a Google Voice app), and login to my Gmail account. With that Google login I should have had access to my email, calendar entries and contacts. Well, the first two items worked like a charm, but the contacts were an issue.
After a little use, I noticed ‘some’ of my contacts were missing, so I went into the Contacts app on the Pre Plus and hit up the Preferences section. From there you can click on your Google account and it will tell you the number of contacts you have synced with your phone. Mine said 47—wrong, incorrect, not even close.
I should have had 155 total. So I tried a few things—mostly the obvious. I deleted the contacts from my phone and tried to resync. Still 47 and nothing more.
I did a few Google searches and found that I am not the only person having this issue. And most searches said the same thing, either delete and resync or fix your contacts to not include certain characters. Not willing to go through 155 contacts and “fix” them, I continued to look thinking there had to be a better (simpler) answer.
It turns out there was a simple fix, which I found on the Palm Support Community website. Here are the details;
Go to Google Contacts (on the web) and go to your “My Contacts” group. Once there, do a Select: all, and then a Remove from…My Contacts Then grab your Pre and resync that account. This should bring the contacts on your Pre down to 0. Then go back to Google Contacts (on the web) and add the contacts that you want to sync back into your My Contacts section. Then grab your Pre and resync those contacts again. This should bring the contacts on your Pre to match the amount in the My Contacts section on the web. After that, I had, and still have my 155 contacts on the Palm Pre Plus. Big issue, simple fix. Of course, I would highly suggest that you make sure your data is backed up before making any big changes, just in case.

Michael Jackson to sell Samsung 500GB external drive

Section: Computers, Security, Peripherals, Storage

If you live in Europe, are a fan of Michael Jackson and need a storage device, check out the new Samsung S2 Portable HDD. This special edition external drive is preloaded with Michael Jackson’s “This is It”, timed with the release of the DVD and Blu-ray Disc release on February 22nd. Samsung did not release the price.
Keen to help users building a movie collection on their PCs, the 500GB drive connects via USB. Interestingly, Samsung seems to orient it’s product for those building content libraries they’d rather keep hidden, with the addition of “SecretZone™ that encrypts and stores data on a virtual drive as well as SafetyKey™, a powerful data-security function that offers dual data protection through a password.” It seems like some high-powered protection for keeping the Star Wars saga safe.
The unit is quite brazen in gold with the “This is It” logo silhouette featured prominently on top.
A quick check online finds you can find a similar non-special edition Samsung S2 HDD for as low as $69.99. We’d suspect the special edition would be just a bit higher.

IBM demonstrates speedy graphene transistors
Posted February 8, 2010 at 07:33 AM by Cheng Hung
Section: Business News
IBM has recently made a breakthrough by making graphene-based processors achieve a speed of 100 GHz. By comparison, silicon-based processors max out at 40 GHz. What’s more, an IBM researcher, Yu–Ming Lin, said that it is possible to fabricate graphene transistors with existing processes used in the semiconductor industries. This should speed up commercialization of the technology, if it ever happens. Just when things seem to look good, Lin said graphene-based microprocessors cannot substitute silicon-based microprocessors used in today’s computers, at least in the near future, due to some inherent properties in those materials. Graphene is possible to be used in analog transistors like signal processors and amplifiers, though.

Dropbox, a file sharing app, coming to an Android phone near you
Posted February 6, 2010 at 08:10 AM by Natesh Sood
Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Web, Web Apps
There are many services available that allow users to share files over the Internet, such as documents, photos, videos, and music. These services become much more efficient and popular if they create an app to be used on smartphones such as the iPhone, Palm webOS, BlackBerry, or Android phones. Well, Dropbox has recently announced in an email that a Dropbox app will become available for Android and BlackBerry soon.
The email wasn’t really specific as to a time the app would become available. But the fact that it is coming is sure to make paid and free users happy. Basically, you upload whatever media you want to your own account and give away a link that can be used to download it. The app on an Android or BlackBerry phone makes sharing media files that much simpler and effective. Currently, a SugarSync app is available on the Android market, which is similar to Dropbox. Both services allow free accounts to use 2GB of online space, and paid accounts receive higher storage.

Google Maps gets multitouch support on the Motorola Droid
Posted February 5, 2010 at 08:41 PM by Natesh Sood
Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Web, Google

It seems Google has finally updated Google Maps to feature multitouch support. Since the Droid runs on Android 2.0, the capability for multitouch was always there, but the program was never written to encompass multitouch.
If you own the Motorola Droid, go to the Android Market app and find the Google Maps app, then press install updates. The 3.4.0 update is about 3.01MB large and takes around 10 seconds to download, depending on your connection. Since I have the Motorola Droid, I was able to check out the latest Google Maps update, and the ability to pinch and zoom into the map definitely makes it easier to use.

Samsung rolling out products using transparent AMOLED display soon
Posted February 5, 2010 at 06:23 PM by Cheng Hung
Section: Peripherals, Displays/Projectors
I don’t even know where to begin with this one. Transparent AMOLED displays are awesome in so many ways, I think my geekiness is about to reach record highs. Just imagine the possible applications of transparent displays, you can replace your windows with it and probably use them as HUDs on your vehicles’ windscreen!
Samsung dropped some tidbits about launch details on upcoming products using transparent AMOLED displays. The first device rolled out by Samsung that uses the technology is an all-in-one MP3 player called the IceTouch. The product functions as a hybrid music player, radio, DVD player, picture viewer and portable storage unit. A demo video is displayed at the bottom of this post.
Samsung isn’t planning to take a time off any time soon, as they are also planning to launch a laptop featuring a 14-inch see-through colour OLED screen within 12 months! Not only that, they are looking to apply this transparent screen technology onto any other devices they can put their hands on, even the ones they don’t currently manufacture. Could my windscreen HUD dream come true? Well, Reid Sullivan, VP of audio/video and digital imaging marketing at Samsung Electronics America, admits that they are also considering to place GPS systems on windscreens. That pretty much answered my question. As promised, here’s a demo video of the Samsung IceTouch:

The Hachette Book Group becomes the latest to challenge the $9.99 Amazon ebook pricing model
Posted February 5, 2010 at 05:19 PM by Robert Nelson
Section: Gadgets / Other, ebooks

In the past week we have seen what could be the end of Amazon’s $9.99 pricing model for ebooks. First was the spat between Amazon and Macmillan, then Rupert Murdoch chimed in with Harper Collins and now the Hachette Book Group looks to do the same—sell ebooks at prices higher than $9.99.
This news comes by way of an email that was sent from Hachette Book Group CEO David Young who stated that;
“At Hachette Book Group, we have been considering a new pricing model for some time, and have decided to transition to selling our e-books through an agency model.”
Bottom line, the Hachette Book Group seems to be joining forces with Macmillan and Harper Collins. I just wonder how long before we hear similar news coming from Penguin as well as Simon & Schuster. It seems the iPad, at least in the case of ebooks and the iBook store has (despite not being available for at least two more months) already had a dramatic effect.

Hulu to stay free - for now
Posted February 5, 2010 at 04:08 PM by JG Mason
Section: Video, Content, HDTV, Gadgets / Other, Household, Web, Online Music/Video
According to Disney EVP Kevin Mayer , Hulu isn’t transitioning to a paid model of any kind any time soon. Hulu, a video content distribution website partnership between Fox, NBC and Disney, has rocketed in popularity. Mayer did add that Hulu will be asking it’s customers to pay, though it is unclear how that will work or when it will happen.
Mayer suggested it will come in the form of subscriptions, one-time rentals, or perhaps movie rentals. The company hopes to augment it’s ad-supported free content with a revenue stream to capture dollars as some consumers consider transitioning to an online TV entertainment scheme. The perhaps dangerous question for Hulu quickly becomes: will forcing consumers to choose between traditional cable and satellite TV subscriptions and online subscriptions hasten the transformation of their current business model?
It is interesting to note that Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, is on the Board at Disney and is a staunch advocate for removing Flash (on which Hulu is based) from our future. Both the iPhone and coming iPad lack Flash support and that stance doesn’t look to change as more companies embrace HTML5.

Microsoft posts, then pulls ‘buy Office 2007 get Office 2010 free’ offer

A leak on the Microsoft website has revealed some details in regards to how those who purchase Office 2007 between March 5 and September 30 of this year will be able to get a copy of Office 2010 for free upon release.
Of course, that page was also quickly removed, which means that Microsoft was either not ready to make that deal official or that the offer may still be subject to change.
Either way, what we can tell you is what was on the page when it was showing—and that was that any customer who purchases Office 2007 between March 5 and September 30 will be able to get Office 2010 for free. The catch here is that you will need to not only purchase the software, but also make sure you activate the software and also save your dated receipt.

Who’s on Crack in Tech 2.5.10
Posted February 5, 2010 at 12:48 PM by JG Mason
Section: Audio, Home Audio, Communications, Computers, Gadgets / Other, Features, Originals, Columns, Who's On Crack

Welcome to this weeks look back at the dumbest moves in tech I could find. The thrum of iPad talks are dying as we enter the Apple waiting game for a few months while hot phones are expect to show up in Barcelona later this month. Here are the nominees for tech moves sponsored by illegal narcotics:
nook says customers come last Sony to build Walkman tablet Kindle stumbles Our Editor pays for IT
This week a leaked memo revealed a firmware upgrade for the nook, version 1.2. Our Editor, Robert Nelson wrote, “Unfortunately, while the memo revealed that the in-store display units would be receiving the update, it also revealed that they would be receiving it before the customers.” The memo made no note of when existing users can upgrade, other than it won’t be first.
This is actually a good business practice, as I hold the “buyers are liars” and customer is #453. That is the model you should build on as alienating your early adapters can only bring good things. Witness the iPhone: charge them an early adopter fee, then pull the rug out and drop the price - and the iPhone went on to win us all. You can’t fault the nook folks for following such grandiose steps. Also, can’t we just stick to normal capitalization rules. Not capitalizing the nook seems disrespectful, crackheads.
Gadgetell writer Cheng Hung posted this about Sony, “Can Sony make one that’s on par with its rival? Oneda (Sony’s CFO ) admits that they are lagging “a little” behind Apple, but given their track record, Sony is usually a year behind Apple in terms of handheld devices. “
3 things bug me right there: 1. As a marketing rule, you don’t let the CFO intro new product directions or concepts. CFO’s follow money and while that is dandy they usually don’t buy into marketing vision or product vision. So you end up with “we’re making this freakin’ awesome tablet that is going bring in bucket loads of cash.”
2. Sony is lagging “a little” behind Apple; a year behind Apple in handheld devices. From the CFO’s POV perhaps. But from everyone else’s view, um, no. The easiest comparison for me is the XPERIA vs iPhone. Sony’s come a long way but still isn’t there. Maybe by little, he mean like how there were little dinosaurs that were as big as my house.
And 3. Facts I can tell you about Sony’s tablet: it will look pretty and be expensive. Can they build something amazing? Maybe. The new XPERIA X10 looks handy with Android and they could parlay that into a tablet form that might work. It will take a lot of work to get it to Sony standards (and by that I do not mean something that is liable to catch on fire). A Sony tablet with nothing new to offer (aka most of Sony’s products for the past 15 years) will fall short of their and probably my expectations. Don’t get me wrong Sony, I want to love you, it’s just you need to get off the rock and realize Sony doesn’t mean today what it meant in the 80s, in consumer products anyway.
It was a good run, Amazon. The dream of all books $9.99, peace and harmony in the world. Well, that’s gone down the crapper: Our Robert Nelson writes, “Macmillan was upset because of the $9.99 pricing with Amazon, Amazon pulled their content, Amazon then later allowed them back in at the prices they wanted.”
Much has been writ in the media about Amazon blew this or Amazon won this. The truth is Amazon got beat up in the school yard with everyone watching. Now, Amazon doesn’t even both bringing in lunch money as it knows everyone is coming for a similar beating. The cocky and possibly high, cool kid just got served, to use the vernacular of kids of 5 years ago -I am phat like that.
Amazon’s big plan is in turmoil, pricing is expected to go fruity, the Kindle’s next gen device can’t get here fast enough and now the king of integrated buying (iTunes) is coming to play. Competing on price looks to have failed for Amazon, so what’s next?
Our Editor pays for IT.
I like to pick on Robert, mostly because (a) I knows he reads this and (b) because he can take it. Last week, Robert revealed what he is willing to pay for in terms of web services.
“Personally I have never been one to shy away from a paid service, that is, assuming I actually use it and find value in it. The services that I pay for vary from time to time, but there always seems to be a core group that I keep.”
In looking at his list, so many are paid for options for more storage. Photo storage, Evernote storage, MobileMe storage, SugarSync storage… Good God man, how prolific a writer/phototog/digital content creator are you? You’ve got more storage than a fleet of U-Hauls!
Not that I want you to change, heavens no. Your generous contribution to all these paid offerings mean you shoulder my weight at most of them. I take the freebie road and max out. Then I add another alias and max that out. You get a goodwill feeling for flashing the cash while I get a free smugness on how I am gaming the system. That’s a win-win - so thanks Robert. Even though I think you are on Crack for having that much storage. Maybe that will change now that you’ve fallen for a pink Pogoplug?
Barnes & Noble currently rolling out update 1.2.0 for nook owners
Posted February 5, 2010 at 12:02 PM by Robert Nelson
Section: Gadgets / Other, ebooks
Earlier this morning we saw the leaked memo detailing the software update plans for the nook. That memo stated that the stores would be receiving the update “this week” and that the employees would be able to side-load the version 1.2.
Well, it seems that this week is here for the customers, because reports of the new update rolling out have begun to roll in. According to Matthew Miller from The Mobile Gadgeteer, his nook was updated earlier this morning. At least in his case, the update, which brought he version up to 1.2.0 came over-the-air on a 3G connection. Some of the changes that he pointed out included;
Newly designed icons are present in the lower color display The navigation up and down button in the lower touch display are bigger (one of my favorite improvements) You can sort you My Documents library by title and author The Lend Me icon is clearly present so you know which books can be loaned out There are no longer weird title issues in content I side-loaded myself from other ebook stores Overall response to touch and navigation seems snappier with

Spotify vs iTunes: the coming war
Posted February 5, 2010 at 11:32 AM by JG Mason
Section: Audio, Home Audio, Portable Audio, Communications, Smartphones, Web, Web Apps
Spotify looks to woo music labels with the idea that the album is not dead, as iTunes would have us believe. In fact, Spotify says 30% of music download on their site is albums. Spotify uses a subscription method that looks to transform users buying habits and it is using this concept to muscle into the US market.
According to Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, Spotify launch is looking “pretty good” and he expects to launch inside of 2 months time. The CEO stressed that Spotify is more than just a medium to sell music, it will be a way for artists (and labels) to touch their customers, to learn more about their demographics and open a direct line of communication to them. So much more than that other sales tool, iTunes.
Says Ek, “we’re not only an ad-supported music company. We’re a subscription music company. And we’re a download music company, too. In certain territories, in downloads we’re number two or three after iTunes. So, through our platform there are different monetizations that are happening.”
When asked how the company will set itself apart, Ek replied, “I think if we start getting the entire music industry with us on this, we can see them experimenting on things like putting lyrics next to every track, or videos, or behind-the-scenes videos if you actually buy the album. Or you might be getting a playlist with the live set list of the show you saw.”
Spotify inked a deal with Telia in Sweden that preloaded Spotify on devices and even 3G data cards. Not only did this grow Spotify, but according to the company, reduced churn for the teleco. That is something Spotify will use to get it’s hook into the US market. Reports have suggested even Google is on board.
Clearly, Spotify is looking to gain support from music labels and mobile carriers as they know consumers will follow. With iTunes seen as the backbone of the iPhone, Spotify could be a welcome competitor.

Nook firmware 1.2 update plans revealed by leaked internal memo
Posted February 5, 2010 at 10:22 AM by Robert Nelson
Section: Gadgets / Other, ebooks
A recently leaked internal memo has revealed some update plans for the Nook ereader. The memo highlights how the stores will be receiving version 1.2 of the software sometime “this week” and that they will be able to “easily side-load” the update. Unfortunately, while the memo revealed that the in-store display units would be receiving the update, it also revealed that they would be receiving it before the customers. There was nothing in terms of what users can expect feature (or fix) wise. Additionally, new Nook units that are going to be making the trip into a store will start coming with version 1.2 pre-loaded. Bottom line, I guess Nook owners should be on the lookout for a firmware update, lets just hope that it is not to far into the future.

Samsung’s E61 ebook reader revealed, complete with not-so-nice looking keyboard
Posted February 5, 2010 at 09:11 AM by Robert Nelson
Section: Gadgets / Other, ebooks
Aside from the fairly obvious similarities with the Kindle 2, at first glance the Samsung E61 has a keyboard that does not look all that nice. Of course, that is just based on looking at an image, so we are going to have to reserve a final opinion until we get some hands on.
That said, otherwise the Samsung E61 appears like it could be a competitive device in the e-reader market. But again, that is based on specs and the opinion of someone else.
So far there has not been anything mentioned in terms of a release date or pricing, although it seems logical that if people are getting hands-on the release cannot be all that far off.
Details about the E61 reader include a 6-inch display with a 600 x 800 resolution, removable battery, 2GB of internal memory, microSD card slot, Wi-Fi and support for epub, PDF and plain text.

LG’s X20 netbook makes the required FCC appearance
Posted February 5, 2010 at 08:01 AM by Robert Nelson
Section: Computers, Netbooks
A new, and still unannounced LG netbook has recently been spotted in an FCC listing. The model in question is the LG X20, and so far it looks like we have a pretty complete set of specs but nothing in terms of when it will be available, or for how much.
Spec wise, the X20 will have a 10.1-inch (1366 x 768) display, a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, Intel 3150 GMA graphics, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, a 1.3-megapixel webcam and Bluetooth. Additionally, the X20 appears to be able to support up to 2GB of RAM and have 3G capability, though the later will likely be included as an optional accessory.
Other details include that the X20 will be running Windows 7, ship with a 4-cell battery and weigh in at 2.6-pounds (with the battery installed).
Due in part to the 3G mention, it would appear likely that this will end up with a mobile carrier, but again no clue as to which one.

Sony wants to make its own tablet, to rival the iPad
Posted February 4, 2010 at 09:33 PM by Cheng Hung
Section: Business News, Computers, Mobile Computers
Sony’s CFO Nobuyuki Oneda announced their desire of entering the tablet market at a post-earnings report news conference earlier today. Although not in a rush to start churning out tablets any time soon, Sony is pretty content with the success of its ebook reader, the Reader Daily Edition. From the looks of it, they aren’t too worried of the iPad affecting sales of their ebook readers.
What sets the iPad apart is the elegant and seamless OS. Can Sony make one that’s on par with its rival? Oneda admits that they are lagging “a little” behind Apple, but given their track record, Sony is usually a year behind Apple in terms of handheld devices. There’s no official confirmation on when the Sony tablet might start appearing, though. If you’re looking for a spec sheet, well, there’s none. Sony’s just in the talks of making one, they haven’t actually designed or produced any prototypes. Will the upcoming Sony tablet be a spin-off of Sony Dash?

Nikon’s latest batch of small cameras hit the scene
Posted February 4, 2010 at 07:10 PM by Greg Billetdeaux
Section: Imaging, Digital Cameras
According to Nikon, the “S” in their new S series of cameras represents stylish, slim design with superior performance and lots and lots of zoom. Sounds good to me. But seriously, the S series are Nikon’s tiny cameras that still manage to zoom like crazy and shoot HD video.
The S8000 is the pinnacle of their performance. Boasting a 10x zoom lens, a 3-inch, 921,000-dot, Clear Color Display, and the ability to shoot 720p HD video at 30 frames per second, all in a tiny tiny package. This camera is built to impress. Plus, look at the elegant black coating that covers its slender body. Beautiful. The camera itself is a 14.2-megapixel camera that includes a new feature called the Creative Slider. This feature simplifies adjusting brightness, saturation, and color tone by utilizing the Rotary Multi Selector. Plus, a new feature on the flash, called “Advanced Flash Control”, allows the photographer to make a more natural looking flash shot.
You will be able to pick up the S8000 this month for $300 in your choice of black, red, bronze, and champagne silver.
Sporting a 14.2-megapixel display like the 8000, the S6000 goes for the slim look with an inch-thick frame. The S6000 also has a 7x zoom with the ability to shoot 720p video at 30fps just like the 8000. Not to be completely outdone, it has a 2.7-inch, 230,000-dot Clear Color Display LCD. Similar to the 8000, it also has the additional feature of Advanced Flash Control.
The S6000 will set you back $250 next month in either black, red, bronze, or champagne silver.
Going down the line, we get to Nikon’s newest touchscreen camera, the S4000. The S4000 features a 12-megapixel camera with a 3-inch, 460,000-dot, touch-panel Clear Color Display. As it should, the S4000 has many special, touch-screen related features, one being the Touch Shutter. With touch shutter, users can select the main subject of the photo by just tapping it on the screen. Also at the tip of your fingers, is the ability, just like the others, to record 720p HD video.
Having a few less features and some interesting new colors, you can pick one of these up next month for $200 in your choice of plum, silver, pink, red, or black.

The New COOLPIX S6000: High Performance Is Always In Style The new COOLPIX S6000 digital camera blends performance into an elegant camera design to create the ideal accessory for wherever life leads. ARM CEO has high hopes for netbooks

ARM CEO Warren East, made a very bold statement recently by saying that netbooks will dominate at least 90% of the PC market over the next few years. He also went on to say that ARM intends to power up more netbooks with ARM-based CPU architecture. It is widely known that Windows does not support ARM processors, but ARM is confident that ARM processors will succeed even without Windows support. While technically, most devices nowadays are powered by at least a couple of ARM microprocessors, the CPU remains dominated by Intel or AMD.
ARM seems pretty positive in Linux’s progress as a whole, and plans to use Linux all the way whether with the support of Windows or not. I, for one, am skeptical of ARM’s high expectations. Take for example AMD, even with Windows support, it can barely beat Intel in terms of market share. Intel’s marketing campaigns are very effective, therefore non-technical customers who are not aware of the wide range of options available to them will most likely go Intel. Asked if Microsoft may one day provide support of Windows on ARM architecture, East said “It’s really an operational decision for Microsoft to make. I don’t think there’s any major technical barriers. Microsoft’s well aware of the technical support we can provide to them, but it is an operational challenge for them, and one that only they can work out. We can’t really help them with it.”

Nearly 200 million people a day log on to Facebook
Posted February 4, 2010 at 01:22 PM by Sue Walsh
Section: Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking
Facebook has doubled in size in the last year, boasting a whopping 350 million registered users, and what’s even more impressive is that fully half of them-175 million-log on everyday. By this summer it’s predicted that over half of all Internet users will visit Facebook.
Last year Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg said they were working towards lifting the current 5,000 friend limitation that’s currently in place, possibly anticipating the current popularity of the site, but it hasn’t happened and honestly, that’s not a bad thing. Who on earth really wants thousands of Facebook friends? It would make for an out of control newsfeed and make the personal connections that make Facebook so great next to impossible.
Are you on Facebook? Do log on everyday? Consider yourself an addict? I admit I love Facebook and I do log on everyday, several times a day. I also have the BlackBerry app and the iPhone/iPod Touch app. I network with colleagues, hang out with friends and connect with far flung family members. Facebook has become an important part of my life.

I have used the Pogoplug for all of 20 minutes now (5 of which were to set it up) and I have to say that this seems to be a device that I am going to wonder how I ever lived without. Of course, that is just a first impression, but as of now I am super excited. It also goes to show just how easy the Pogoplug is to set up and have running. Honestly it took me longer to find a spare external USB hard drive in my office. I do plan on offering more of a full-featured review after I actually use it for a while, but for now I wanted to share some images of the unit itself, the packaging, the cords it shipped with and what it looks like setup.

Google gives Android a disadvantage? Ups security for Apps on iPhone, WinMo

To make their products more appeasing to IT security mangers, Google has added some security to their Google Apps. Google is looking to provide a similar security experience to Microsoft’s Exchange. These changes make smartphones accessing company data much more secure.
The new security settings allow IT admin to add layers of security to smartphones that access company data. Google has given power to the IT department to remote wipe, enforce password protection, style and size, and lock devices when idle. IT will be able to push these requirements out to users devices.
Initially, the only supported devices will be iPhones, Windows Mobile and Nokia E series. No word on BlackBerry yet though Android and Nexus One were mentioned to have “similar features” soon. Premier and educational users should start to see these features added today. Admin can access these settings from the Mobile tab in the Google Apps dashboard.

Official: JooJoo tablet will “reach consumers at the end of February”

Yesterday we heard a few last minute details about the JooJoo, and now it looks like we have some confirmation in the form of an official press release. Basically, just to sum it up, the JooJoo tablet is going into full production and will be shipping soon.
According to the press release;
“Fusion Garage today announced that its category-creating JooJoo Internet tablet has moved into full production with initial shipments expected to reach consumers at the end of February.”
There you have it, the end of February. Well, at least for those that were brave enough to place a pre-order.
The good news here, is that the JooJoo tablet will support Flash at launch. Which for most will ultimately mean that the JooJoo will turn into nothing more than Hulu watching device.
Still a $499 tablet that offers support for Flash sounds like it could be an interesting device.

FUSION GARAGE MOVES INTO FULL PRODUCTION OF BREAKTHROUGH JOOJOO Tablet Innovative Manufacturing Agreement and Investment from CSL Group Helps Reinvent Consumer Electronics Business Model
SINGAPORE, February 3, 2010 – Fusion Garage today announced that its category-creating JooJoo Internet tablet has moved into full production with initial shipments expected to reach consumers at the end of February. Helping fuel the JooJoo’s arrival and Fusion Garage’s next phase of corporate growth is an innovative manufacturing agreement and strategic investment from mobile device OEM and distribution giant CSL Group of Malaysia.
Fusion Garage is expected to announce a second round of investment within the next two weeks which would augment today’s investment from CSL and the company’s initial round secured in November 2009. CSL, established in 1998, has rapidly grown to a major conglomerate, with sales of nearly $300M USD, and the organization is one of the largest manufacturers of cell phones, mobile devices, netbook and notebook computers in SE Asia.
The strategic relationship between the companies calls for CSL to absorb all up front manufacturing costs associated with JooJoo production. This agreement virtually eliminates the normal high cost of mass market entry – often in the tens of millions – for any emerging Consumer Electronics (CE) hardware developer. In exchange, CSL will receive a revenue royalty from each JooJoo sold globally. Additionally, CSL has made a strategic venture investment in Fusion Garage which will help the company to move to the next phase of its corporate growth and product development.
“This is landscape changing manufacturing agreement in the CE hardware market in much the same way Dell changed the PC business model with its direct to consumer sales approach back in the 1990s,” said Fusion Garage founder and CEO, Chandrasekar (Chandra) Rathakrishnan. “CSL’s confidence in JooJoo and strategic investment enables us to concentrate on the expansion of our organization, software development and, ultimately, building a world class CE company.”
“We are justifiably bullish – not only on the promise of the JooJoo and the Internet tablet market’s potential but also on Fusion Garage’s forward looking vision,” said Dato Eric Chuah, Chairman of the CSL Group of Companies. “We have an opportunity to expand our business via this relationship, enter a hot market with a trusted partner and turn the traditional CE hardware manufacturing model on its head. We are betting on volume here and firmly believe our bet will be a winner.”
About JooJoo JooJoo, officially introduced in December 2009, is the category-creating Web tablet that provides near instantaneous Internet access and the best online experience. The African word “joujou” means magical object and Fusion Garage’s JooJoo brings users into an online world where everything on the Internet is just a single touch away. Powered by Fusion Garage’s innovative browser-based operating system, JooJoo enables users to quickly and easily tap into Internet applications, news, music, high definition video, social media and web services. JooJoo has revolutionary hardware, including the largest capacitive touch screen of any device on the market – 12.1 inches –providing full screen content viewing. Its ultra-portable, ultra-thin design offers the best Internet experience anywhere – on the couch or on the go, standing or sitting. JooJoo’s gesture-based user interface allows easy transitions between Websites and turns pages in a digital publication via the movement of a finger. A full-size touch keyboard appears when users need it, and disappears when viewing content or paging through digital content. JooJoo is available directly from Fusion Garage at www.thejoojoo.com.
About Fusion Garage Fusion Garage enables the best Internet experience through innovative software and hardware devices. RIM rumored to have begun work on BlackBerry OS 6.0

The rumors are flying that RIM has begun working on their BlackBerry OS 6.0. No details, but you can bet BlackBerry lovers are hoping for something truly groundbreaking. Tour owners however, would be happy if 5.0 was finally released. That’s not RIM’s fault though. 5.0 is done and was sent to the carriers. It’s now up to them as to when it’s pushed to customers. If I were to guess as to why they are dragging their feet I’d say it has to do with sales. They would rather customers have to buy a new phone to get 5.0. Since RIM is also working on 5.2 and intends to release it later this year, it’s a safe bet the carriers will finally release 5.0!

Amazon buying Touchco to compete with Apple?
Posted February 3, 2010 at 09:09 PM by Shawn Ingram
Section: Gadgets / Other, ebooks
It should come as no surprise that Amazon is looking to compete better with Apple’s iPad, especially given the recent MacMillan issues. It looks like the company’s move now is to acquire other companies that could help bring Amazon’s products closer to Apple’s. It looks as if Amazon has acquired the New York-based startup Touchco to help.
According to the New York Times, Touchco may have been acquired by Amazon to be folded into Lab126, the Kindle hardware team. Touchco’s main product is a thin, flexible touch sensitive surface. The technology is called interpolating force-sensitive resistance, which sounds like a fancy way of saying multitouch resistive screens. It uses resistors to determine the pressure applied to any number of points, and is designed to be easily integrated into LCD screens.
Obviously we can’t yet know what Amazon is planning on doing with Touchco, though a touchscreen Kindle seems logical. Although, the big appeal to many people for the Kindle is the fact that it uses the e-ink display rather than the LED-backlit screen that the iPad will use. If Amazon can use the Touchco team to create it’s own touchscreen e-ink display, and sell it for less than the Que, it might be worthwhile. A Kindle 3 with an LCD screen just doesn’t seem like the right way to go, and could end up losing more faith than it lost after last weekend’s MacMillan debacle.

Palm’s Mobile Hotspot on the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus not so hot [UPDATED]

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Broadband Cards, Mobile
I guess I should file this under “good to know” because I had been thinking about replacing my MiFi with a Palm Pre Plus now that it has the Mobile Hotspot app available. But after reading a recent article over on jkOnTheRun I am pretty glad that I have been dragging my feet about making the switch because it seems that the data speeds from the Palm Pre Plus and Pixi Plus are not nearly as good as that of the MiFi. I guess device convergence is not always a good thing.
According to the testing, the results were said to be “disappointing to say the least.” As far as the testing, it was noted that multiple tests were done with the MiFi, Pre Plus and the Pixi Plus. Additionally, the tests were done only in areas that offered full 3G reception.
As for the results;
Palm Pixi Plus - Test 1 - 167kbps down and 263kbps up Palm Pixi Plus - Test 2 - 127kbps down and 376kbps up Palm Pre Plus - Test 1 - 166kbps down and 235kbps up Palm Pre Plus - Test 2 - 155kbps down and 158kbps up MiFi - Test 1 - 867kbps down and 355kbps up MiFi - Test 2 - 931kbps down and 558kbps upI think the above description of disappointing would be entirely accurate. I guess that also means that I will be keeping the MiFi, at least until I begin to see some additional test results.
[UPDATE] I was able to confirm that I am going to be receiving a Pre Plus and Pixi Plus here in a few days, which means that I will be able to do some testing of my own.

Get ready to read textbooks on your iPad

Several textbook publishers have secured deals to have their books digitally converted for devices like Apple’s iPad. ScrollMotion, Inc., has inked a deal with several publishers to develop textbooks, test-prep reading materials, and study guides for digital devices. Scroll Motion, which has already developed iPhone apps, will likely adapt the books to include a search function, dictionaries, glossaries, and quizzes. Companies involved in the project include McGraw-Hill Cos., Houghton Mifflin Harcourt K-12, Pearson Education, and Kaplan, Inc., major publishers of educational materials. I recognize more than a few of those names from my days of buying overpriced books from my college bookstore. The deal has obvious promises for a new style of education. Though college students have yet to fully embrace e-textbooks, analysts believe that portable devices could change that. It’s much easier to read on a fast-loading tablet you already own than to carry a laptop every time you need to read a new chapter between classes. The iPad could even deliver the ability to integrate and link multimedia content to text. Anyone who has been on a college campus in the past 4 years knows that Apple products are commonplace. More education-focused content on the iPad could lead to even further Applemania. Read [Wall Street Journal]

Hitachi achieves a storage density of 2.5 Terabits per square inch
Posted February 3, 2010 at 03:18 PM by Cheng Hung
Section: Peripherals, Storage
Let’s face it, we can never have enough storage space on our hard drives. Current hard drives that use perpendicular magnetic recording technology already have densities of 300-400 GB per square inch, and they are capable of achieving up to 1 terabits per square inch density. The technology is being pushed to the limits and alternatives need to be considered to lift the theoretical density limit.
Hitachi has achieved a density of 2.5 Terabits per square inch with the heat-assisted magnetic recording technology, which has a theoretical limit of up to 50 terabits per square inch. 2.5 Terabits per square inch is 5 times higher than the one currently met in commercial HDDs, which means commercial hard drives with capacities of over 10GB is possible. Unfortunately there is no news on when Hitachi might implement this commercially. For all we know, flash drives might actually improve and render HDDs obsolete.

Hasselblad introduced the new H4D-40 “entry-level” camera to its existing line of H4D medium format camera systems. Touting a 33 x 44mm CCD sensor, which is almost twice the size of a full-frame 35mm DSLR sensor, the H4D-40 shoots at a whooping 40MP. If you ever need more megapixels to work with, you can count on the higher-end models in the H4D line of medium format cameras.
This entry-level model also features the True Focus AF system, which is commonly found in the higher-end models. With True Focus, photographers can work with shallow depth-of-field compositions more effectively. The H4D-40 is priced at $19, 995, which isn’t much of a surprise considering the kind of specs you get with the camera. For $ 19, 995, you get the H4D-40 kit, including the camera body, 80mm lens, viewfinder and the company’s Phocus 2.0 software. It is available for shipping now.

Verizon announces Motorola Devour Android phone, available in March

Verizon and Motorola today officially announced the Motorola Devour, an Android-powered phone set to be released for use on the Verizon network next month. The Devour, which runs Motorola’s custom-version of Android, MOTOBLUR, comes with a QWERTY slider and a 3.1-inch capacitive touchscreen. The phone runs Android 1.6 and includes an 8GB microSD card to take advantage of the following specs:
3.1-inch touchscreen display with 320 x 480 resolution 3-megapixel camera EVDO Rev.A, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and aGPS Bluetooth with A2DP HTML5 compatible browser Speakerphone microSD card slot Talk time: Up to 340 minutes, Standby time: Up to 440 hours 4.55 x 2.4 x 0.61 inches, 6.35 ouncesVerizon announced that the Devour will appear in store beginning in March. Unfortunately, that debut will include the relatively stale Donut build of Android rather than the newer, fresher Eclair. Motorola has said that it will upgrade its MOTOBLUR social-networking system to Android 2.0, but it seems they won’t be able to do it soon enough to get their new phone with the latest version of Android. Let’s hope that they’ll be able to make an adjustment quickly and push out the update soon.
The Motorola Devour requires a Verizon Nationwide Talk plan of at least $39.99 and a data plan of $29.99.

Rupert Murdoch sees weakness in Amazon following Macmillan deal, wants “room to maneuver”
Posted February 3, 2010 at 10:39 AM by Robert Nelson
Section: Gadgets / Other, ebooks
The whole mess with Macmillan and Amazon seems likely to spread to others at this point, which ultimately sounds like it will be bad news for Kindle customers in the long run. Just to recap, Macmillan was upset because of the $9.99 pricing with Amazon, Amazon pulled their content, Amazon then later allowed them back in at the prices they wanted.
Now it seems that others are taking note of this and sensing some weakness in the whole $9.99 Amazon pricing deal. The latest is Rupert Murdoch and his Harper Collins and he has recently stated that he sees Amazon is now “willing to sit down” and “renegotiate.”
The important part here is nothing has changed, but that seems to come with a big ‘yet’ at the end because Murdoch also went on to state that the Apple deal “does allow some flexibility and higher prices.”
On a slightly positive note, he did continue on to say that the ebook pricing will remain lower than print editions. Seems to be a small concession.
The kicker here is that I love reading on my Kindle, but at the same time I do not want to pay more than $9.99 for a ebook, and I also do not want to have to start reading regular paper books again.

Bottom line, if you were looking for a Zune HD, now may be a good time to make a purchase.

Nokia releasing Symbian V3, Maemo 6 in second half of year
Posted February 3, 2010 at 08:11 AM by Shawn Ingram
Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile
Nokia has yet to catch up in the US smartphone market, though it could be argued that they don’t need to. Most of the complaints against the companies phones are that they aren’t subsidized by carriers, and lack capacitive screens and multitouch features. With Google introducing multitouch to the Nexus One, this is even more of a loss to Nokia, though one it could overcome by the end of the year.
Digitimes is reporting that Nokia will be skipping Version 2 of Symbian, and skipping straight to V3 by the third quarter of 2010. Symbian V3 will finally add multitouch controls to the mobile OS, which is could be argued are much needed. Nokia is also said to be releasing phones running Maemo 6 sometime in the second half of the year. It is rumored that after these, either in late 2010, or early 2011 we’ll see Symbian V4, which is thought to allow for cross-platform applications to be written for both Symbian and Maemo.
Adding multitouch to it’s phones could finally bring Nokia to the feature set that most Americans seem to want from their smartphones. Adding cross-platform apps to Symbian and Maemo would be a great help for future Maemo phones so they could access more apps. It’ll be exciting to see where Nokia brings these phones, and if they’ll be a bit more affordable to Americans. Either way, more Maemo phones would be interesting, especially if multitouch could be worked into them.

Nexus One gets official multitouch support in latest update
Posted February 3, 2010 at 07:09 AM by Greg Billetdeaux
Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile
Whoa… a company… that listens to what the people want… and gives it to them in a timely manner? That’s unheard of! But Google has done it. Last month, people were so disappointed with the fact that the Nexus One didn’t support multitouch, that hackers worked furiously to get it on there. And multitouch was probably the biggest hacking breakthrough on the Nexus One so far.
But now, Google’s latest software update for the Nexus One rids of all that hard work and brings multitouch functionality to its Browser, Gallery, and Maps applications. Not even a month after its release, Google already rid the phone of its weakest point. Now if only they could get the sales to match…
The software update not only has multitouch support, but it includes a few other things as well. First and foremost, they have added a Google Goggles application directly to your device. Now you can search with your camera, how simple!
Next, they released Google Maps 3.4 onto the Nexus One that will add some much used features onto the application. Now, you can synchronize your favorite places between your web browser (at maps.google.com) and your phone so you can show off to your friends where you love to eat your ice cream. It also syncs with your maps.google.com’s history so it can suggest places if they compare to ones you have searched for recently. And finally, they have added what they call night mode. Not much description is given except that it changes color at night for easier viewing. I can only assume this changes the normally white background to black or a darker blue.
The updates will be rolled out gradually throughout the week so don’t worry if you haven’t gotten it yet. In fact, Google states that most users probably won’t receive this update until the end of the week, so your going to have to be patient and wait for you ability to pinch-to-zoom.

Microsoft investigating battery problems in notebooks running Windows 7
Posted February 2, 2010 at 07:48 PM by Greg Billetdeaux
Section: Computers, Laptops, Netbooks, Software / Applications
Many Windows 7 users are complaining about the severe loss in battery life in their notebooks after only a few weeks. Cases like a previous battery life of two hours cutting down to 30 minutes or less are common. Other cases involve their notebook actually telling them they need a new battery after upgrading to 7, even though Vista said it was fine. Many complaints similar to those above have been put onto Microsoft’s TechNet forum; and Microsoft has decided to investigate into this problem.
So far, Microsoft’s only reasoning for these problems is compatibility issues with its hardware. A spokesman from Microsoft states that it might be a problem in communication between the BIOS and Windows as that is where 7 gets all of its data on battery life. Other than that though, no official cause has been found. But Microsoft did state that as soon as one was found, they would update the community on their TechNet forum.
Be sure to check back for more information regarding this issue.

A Portuguese company has come up with a technology called the projective capacitive touchscreen. Unlike the typical multitouch screen on your gadgets, this touchscreen is a thinner-than-paper polymer film that when applied to glass, plastic or wood turns the surface interactive. Due to the nature of the polymer film, it can even be applied on curved surfaces.
It currently supports16-finger multitouch on a 50-inch screen, and they expect to improve it to support up to 65 fingers! The screen also interacts with airflow, which means that you can blow the surface and the screen will be able to detect it.
They are already working with a number of manufacturers to bring this technology to market, and if things goes according to plan, we may be able to see Displax-based applications this July!

Cardo Systems introduces new method of communication for motorcycle riders

Section: Communications, Accessories, Cellphones, Gadgets / Other, Transportation
If you ride on a motorcycle often for travel, then you probably know how difficult communication is of any sort, whether it be on the phone or talking to the person next to you. Recently, Cardo Systems announced a new product based on Bluetooth to help motorcyclists communicate with one another, or multiple riders.
The scala rider G4 allows up to two riders and two passengers to communicate all at once, or three separate riders, or just two people as long as everyone is within a one mile radius. If you and a group of friends are all traveling to the same place, the ability to communicate at once is definitely helpful. In addition, the scala rider G4 can connect to any other Bluetooth device, such as a MP3 player, GPS unit, and cell phones. In case your devices are not Bluetooth-capable, the scala rider G4 still has a jack that can connect to those devices.
It sports a FM radio, voice activated controls, automatic volume control based on surrounding noise, a weatherproof design, 10 hour battery life on constant usage, and a noise canceling microphone. It it set to retail for $279.95.

The Fujitsu LifeBook UH900 has just been released in the US, for $999. It comes with a 5.6” multitouch display, features an Intel Atom Z530 1.6GHz processor, 2GB RAM, a 62GB SSD, GPS and it runs on Windows 7 Home Premium. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth. The LifeBook UH900 weighs at just a little over 1 lb, sporting a Lithium ion 2-cell polymer, 7.2V, 1800 mAh battery. No words on its battery life, though.
The US version of the LifeBook UH900 is slightly cheaper than its Japanese counterpart, which is priced at approximately $1100. The LifeBook UH900 is not exactly the cheapest UMPC in town, but with the $50 off and a $100 mail-in rebate, it brings down the price to $849. As part of this special offer, Fujitsu is also offering a free 160 GB Backup Ultra Portable Hard Drive, or a free Lexmark X2650 All-in-One Inkjet Printer, as well as free shipping.

JVC announces new $500 Everio GZ-HM340 HD camera
Posted February 2, 2010 at 03:08 PM by Cheng Hung
Section: Imaging, Camcorders
JVC has just announced a new addition to its newly formed Everio line of HD cameras, the GZ-HM340. The Everio line-up of cameras features three sub-$500 HD models, including the GZ-HM340. The GZ-HM340 features an internal flash memory of 16GB, and an expandable SD/SDHC card slot. The camera utilizes a 1/5.8” 1.37 Megapixel CMOS Sensor, a lens capable of up to 20x optical zoom, Advanced Image Stabilizer and face detection. The camera allows you to shoot continuously using dual SD cards or flash memory by automatically switching between those internal media without any interruptions to your recording. It comes with a feature called Face Flow Thumbnail, which displays thumbnails of your videos by using human faces automatically cropped from sections of your video.
Another interesting feature included in the GZ-HM340 is the Time-lapse recording option. It allows for one to 80 second intervals of recording. It is unknown whether a power conservation feature (such as auto off and on) is available when recording a time-lapse video with long intervals. Perhaps the camera needs to be powered up by an AC adapter throughout the time-lapse recording.
The GZ-HM340 also features integration with web services such as YouTube and iTunes. The bundled Everio MediaBrowser software automatically converts, downscales or upscales SD and HD videos for immediate upload to YouTube. The software also allows files to be exported to iTunes, and synced with an iPod or iPhone, or burned to a DVD.
For only $499.95, I think this camera is definitely worth the buy. It will be available later this month.

Samsung goes green with the EcoGreen F3EG 2TB HDD

Section: Peripherals, Storage
Samsung has just updated its EcoGreen HDD line with a new green hard drive called the EcoGreen F3EG, boasting a massive capacity of 2TB with a 3Gbps SATA interface and 16MB or 32MB buffer memory. It has 4 platters of 500GB each, totaling up to its 2TB capacity.
What’s green about this HDD is that it features low-power consumption, low-noise, and an eco-friendly design which meets environmental regulations including RoHS (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment). Samsung claims that the hard drive uses 40% less power in idle mode and 10% less power in read/write mode than competing drives. Although there isn’t much difference in power usage when in read/write mode, every bit helps in going green. The F3EG also features Samsung’s proprietary technologies such as SilentSeek and NoiseGuard to achieve quiet operation. The F3EG is available for $179.99.

Several Twitter users have reported that their accounts have been locked out of Twitter, and are forced to perform a password change. They have received an email notifying them of possible phishing attacks on their accounts, sparking rumors of a wide-spread phishing attack. Some of them have even suspected that the official notification emails sent out by Twitter are actually attempts at phishing, however, the email is genuine. The staff at Twitter may have discovered something fishy is going on, and decided to take precautionary steps. For now, it would be wise to heed Twitter’s advice on changing your passwords. Here is an excerpt of the email:
Due to concern that your account may have been compromised in a phishing attack that took place off-Twitter, your password was reset. Please create a new password by opening this link in your browser: [PASSWORD RESET LINK].
As a reminder, you should be extraordinarily suspicious of any third party that offers to artificially inflate your follower count. We do not endorse any of these sites.

iPad won’t affect netbook/notebook sales says Acer

Acer won’t play that. According to DigiTimes, Acer Taiwan President Scott Lin says he won’t follow Apple down the rabbit hole to tablet computer land. Instead, he says the company will focus on ultra-thin notebooks.
Lin reportedly explained the while creating a tablet is child’s play for Acer, creating the ecosystem around it is Apple’s forte and is not easily repeated. Lin hinted other companies will try to duplicate the hardware, but will fall short in software. Therefore, Acer will focus on what it does best notebooks and ultra-thin notebooks.
Lin noted he expects the iPad not to draw sales away from his product line. He believes the iPad will draw from a very different customer base than those that seek Acer products. It will be interesting to see if Apple can convert netbook buyers or even notebook buyers into iPad buyers or if Lin is correct and they’ll pull from a different base.

JooJoo: the iPad alternative with Flash, 16:9 and it’s shipping this month

According to a phone interview with Venturebeat, the JooJoo tablet computer will begin shipping to pre-orders later this month, within the time promised by the company. With all the hype behind the Apple iPad tablet, the timing could be perfect for Fusion Garage to launch the JooJoo as Apple has done the hard part of whipping potential customers into a frenzy for the next great thing. The JooJoo is listed for sale at $499.
Revealed during the call is manufacturing assistance by a phone manufacturer in southeast Asia. Though Fusion Garage refused to name the company, the move will reduce the high up-front costs of small run manufacturing in exchange for a royalty of each JooJoo sold. This should help keep the company stable throughout the launch cycle. Fusion Garage raised $3 million in first round funding and expects to announce a new round shortly.
When asked point blank about the JooJoo’s chances over the iPad, Fusion Garage CEO said, “t has a much larger screen, 12.1 inches instead of 9.7 inches. The resolution is 1368 by 768 pixels instead of 1024 by 768. There are an extra 300 pixels of length, so it’s 16:9 widescreen resolution instead of 4:3. Watching video on it is a joy. And the Web browsing experience is even better than the iPad, because of the size of the screen.”
JooJoo started as a partnership between Michael Arrington of TechCrunch and Fusion Garage. The relationship has since deteriorated with both partners bringing legal claims against the other. It is unclear if those claims will delay shipping to customers that have pre-ordered. The pre-orders reportedly have surprised Fusion Garage.
The JooJoo won’t have an app store according to the interview, believe that the web can provide much of the content brought about by these applications.

What could be a first look at a Google tablet

The iPad may be the hot topic at the moment, but I am sure that the iPad is far from the last tablet that we are going to be seeing this year. We already know that Google is planning to do something with Chrome OS and now we are being given what could be described as a first look. Below we have some images, along with a concept video which come courtesy of Google Chrome designer Glen Murphy. Keep in mind that the tablet shown here is likely just one of many (multiple) as we have already heard that Chrome OS will not be limited to just one device. Anyway, its an early look, but still an interesting video and set of images.

Free tax help: TurboTax team tackles tax trouble on Twitter

As tax time rolls around here in the US, TurboTax has jumped on the Twitter bandwagon and will answer questions tweeted from taxpayers. TurboTax is using Twitter to answer general tax questions as well as support questions for their tax software, TurboTax. TurboTax is the nation’s best-selling tax software.
“People are increasingly going online to file their taxes. Now they can just as easily go online to get answers from @TeamTurboTax on Twitter,” said Scott Gulbransen, lead for @TeamTurboTax. “This expands the options people have to get answers – whether it’s on Twitter, on the Web or on the phone.
TurboTax looks to have a team of 13 on Twitter responding to questions. So far, there looks to be a lot of activity and the team seems very responsive. It’s an aggressive move by the TurboTax team and as we’ve seen from some companies, a very handy well to assist customers. You can get your tax questions answered at @teamturbotax.

Motorola Devour promo shows Verizon logo

The long rumored Motorola Devour that has been popping up on blogs randomly for the past year or so has finally shown a step towards hitting shelves. Verizon’s shelves that is. The latest evidence shows the Devour on a promo box that will likely be shipped to Verizon retail stores.
The rumored specs on this device have been blurry but usually come to a middle ground at a 600 MHz Qualcomm (the same as the recent Pixi), 3.1-inch capacitive touchscreen display, 3-megapixel camera, and will run Android 1.6 with Motoblur. Motoblur will be the interesting new addition that Motorola has thrown on top of Android.
Based on the image in the promo material, the device sports a Razer gray color (not my favorite), and a full QWERTY keyboard minus a D-Pad. Well now that the cat is out of the bag, all we can do is wait.

Zune Phone reportedly set to debut at MWC

According to a source over at MuyComputer, Microsoft will be unveiling the Zune Phone, which will run on Windows 7 Mobile, at MWC later this month. While Microsoft has not come forth and confirmed this assertion, Jesus Diaz at Gizmodo says his source, Javier Pérez Cortijo, confirms this 100%, and Diaz believes him.
The Zune Phone is somewhat of a misnomer; it will not be a Zune with phone capabilities. Instead, it will be a Windows 7 Mobile phone featuring Zune software. Microsoft is expected to announce Windows 7 Mobile at the Mobile World Congress anyway, so it makes sense to announce a phone that will run it. The phone will run on a NVIDIA Tegra chip, and the screen is said to have a 480 x 272 resolution with HDMI out capability. I’m sure we will learn more in the coming days about the MWC and Zune Phone.

Microsoft introduces the new SideWinder X4 gaming keyboard

Section: Computers, Hardware, Gaming, Peripherals, Mice / Keyboards

If you are a hard core gamer, then you probably already know having all of the high end peripherals are necessary, such as a good mouse and keyboard. Today, Microsoft announced the latest addition to their lineup of gaming keyboards, the SideWinder X4, which boasts anti-ghosting technology. Essentially, many keys can be pressed at once and all of them will register, allowing players to use complex combos.
The Applied Sciences Group is responsible for the new technology in Microsoft’s latest product. The keyboard can register up to 26 different keys being pressed at once, just to give you some perspective on how well the anti-ghosting technology works. Players can associate one key with a combination, called macro recording. If you keep pressing that single button, the combination saved will continue to occur. Similarly, automatic macro repetition will repeat the same macro as many times as you wish. In addition, users can switch between different profiles with ease, in case you switch between different games throughout the day. The backlighting is also customizable to your specific needs.
It is set to be available sometime in March 2010 for $59.95, it will be available on Amazon for pre-order sometime this week as well.

Slacker Radio now available for webOS

Section: Audio, Portable Audio, Communications, Smartphones, Mobile
Slacker had originally announced that a webOS version was in the works, and some had even seen a demo during this past CES. Well, in a little bit of good news for those sporting a webOS handset—that app is now available.
The app, which became available earlier today is currently listed as a beta, and is at version 0.9.4. Users can find and download the Slacker app in the official App Catalog.
As always, there are two listening options available, either listen for free and listen to an ad every so often, or upgrade to the Slacker Plus account which costs $3.99 a month (billed annually).
One drawback is the lack of ability to cache music for offline listening, but aside from the BlackBerry app that is becoming the norm as the iPhone/iPod touch and Android app also lack the ability to cache. Annoying, but certainly not a reason to turn me away from Slacker.

Boingo Unlimited gives you unlimited Wi-Fi access for $9.95 a month

I seem to take free airport Wi-Fi for granted, mainly because I live in the Tampa area and Tampa airport serves the Wi-Fi up for free. I do however understand that many are not quite as lucky and have to pay.
Anyway, Boingo Wireless is currently offering the Boingo Unlimited plan for just $9.95 a month, which according to GottaBeMobile is 50% off their normal price. Sounds like a good deal to me.
As far as what you will get for your 10 bucks a month, well unlimited Wi-Fi of course. But a little more specifically, you will be able to get online at any of the 125,000+ hotspots across the country.

Google Chrome steadily becoming more popular; Windows 7 as well
Posted February 1, 2010 at 07:31 PM by Natesh Sood
Section: Computers, Software / Applications, Web, Downloads, Web Browsers, Google
Good marketing campaigns can do wonders for the product. Case in point with Google Chrome and Microsoft Windows 7, as they both became more popular in the month of January. According to Net Applications, Chrome managed to gain popularity in terms of web browsing by stealing popularity from Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. In January, Google Chrome had a 5.20% usage share, which increased from 4.64% in December. IE had 62.18% in January, decreasing from 62.69% in December, and Firefox had 24.41% in January decreasing from 24.61% in December.
I’m not sure if you noticed or not, but our Editor Robert Nelson certainly has, Google had been pushing an intensive campaign for Google Chrome all through late December and January. Interestingly enough, the most popular browser has become IE 8, which passed IE 6 with percentage usage of 22.31% and 20.07%, respectively.
Windows 7 increased to 7.51% in January from 5.71% in December, and in terms of global usage, it has reached 10%. Mac has only slightly increased from 5.11% in December to 5.13% in January. Linux practically stayed the same at 1.02%. It is worth noting Net Applications probably isn’t the most accurate representation of browser usage because it uses data from 40,000 monitored websites, featuring 160 million unique visitors, and bases it on country population to calculate the appropriate percentages.

Southwest Airlines ready to begin rolling out in-flight Wi-Fi

Section: Communications, Broadband Cards, Computers, Wireless, Gadgets / Other, Transportation
This is certainly not the first we have heard in regards to Southwest Airlines rolling out in-flight Wi-Fi, however it does seem they are past the thinking stage and ready to move forward.
Basically, it looks like Southwest is planning to start by installing the equipment on 15 planes per month and later increase that to 25 per month. In the end though, they are estimating that “by early 2012” they will have Wi-Fi on more than 540 planes.
As far as the service itself, that will be provided by Row44, however pricing is still being worked out. According to Dave Ridley, who is Southwest’s senior vice-president for marketing and revenue management;
“We’ll have a decision on price in the second quarter of 2010, rest assured that, just like our fares, it will be a great value. You can count on it!”
Sounds good, but there are plenty of people that think the fares are high, so we will have to wait and see what the public thinks about the Wi-Fi pricing. And until then, there are other airlines already offering in-flight Wi-Fi.

YouTube experimenting with HTML5-based video player

In an attempt to move away from flash-based video players, YouTube is currently having an opt-in beta for the upcoming HTML5-based video player. You can join the beta by clicking here. Only Google Chrome, Apple Safari (version 4+) and Microsoft Internet Explorer with Chrome Frame installed (Get Chrome Frame) are supported right now.
There are couple of limitations on this early version of the HTML5-based video player, though. Videos with ads embedded in them are not supported, but they will play on the flash-based player. Fullscreen viewing is not supported. Also, if you’ve opted in to other test tube experiments, you may not get the HTML5 player (Feather is supported, though). Here’s a demonstration of the new YouTube HTML5 video player. You can watch it if you don’t mind listening to German.
