Google updates Google Docs; refreshes toolbar, adds menu

I don’t use Google Docs often but I know to just how powerful an app they can be, in the sense that sharing docs are much easier: no more attachment, downloading, saving, opening, re-attaching, and then sending back. In short it saves time.

Just recently, Google has updated the Google Docss toolbar and added a menu. No more tabbed interface and no more sighting of the traditional menu either. Instead, the toolbar looks much like those in Microsoft Word 2003, only web-based.

The team of Docs User Research did a study by asking people if they know the icons and labels after they removed all features in the application form in the user-interface. Answers varied. Some even in places you wouldn’t expect. Now with the redesigned toolbar and menus, people hopefully will find it easier to use Google Docs. Only missing from the toolbar are the View, Window, and Help options. On the other hand, Google Docs brought back the Save and Save & close buttons found at the upper right of the Docs viewer.

Right now, only the word application of Google Docs has this new feature. I hope Google updates the Google Spreadsheets soon enough.
