Gadgetell Review: Skullcandy iPhone FMJ headphones

Product: Skullcandy iPhone FMJ headphones Price and Availability: $79.95, Currently available for sale, although they are noted as being out-of stock until March 1-15, 2008. Rating: 10/10 Pros: A comfortable fit, great sounding and a solid, durable feel. Cons: Not sure I can really call it a con, but at first the cable seemed a bit stiff. It did become a little more flexible with a few days of use. Overall: A great choice for iPhone and/or BlackBerry Curve users alike.
Being both an iPhone user and someone who has used (and enjoyed) Skullcandy headphones in the past I was very excited when I saw the new iPhone FMJ’s. They were introduced and shown off at both CES 2008 and Macworld 2008. During CES I was able to get a good look at them, and although I was not able to get a listen they seemed like they were going to prove worthy, and could not wait to get my hands on a set.
Not only have my previous Skullcandy products been very good, but the FMJ’s are made to work with the iPhone (and also the BlackBerry Curve) having the in-line micrphone. Similar to the standard iPhone headphones, the FMJ’s have the in-line mic that works to control both your music and calls. The small button on the mic will allow you to pause the current track with a single-click and skip to the next track with a double-click when listening to music. When a call comes in you can click to answer and then click again to end the call.
The Skullcandy FMJ’s retail for $79.95 and are available in Silver, Chrome and Black. They ship with a nice circular zippered pouch to keep them safe when not in use and also come with three extra sets of ear-gels to allow for a little more custom fit. The headphones feature a “tightly-wrapped, coiled metal cable” which make them seem more than durable.
The geeky specs for the FMJ’s have them featuring an 11mm speaker, a frequency range of 16 Hz 20K Hz, an impedance of 16 ohms, a max input power of 500mW. The cables are made of an aluminum foil and are 1.1 M in length. The plug is 3.5mm and gold plated.
Bottom Line: Overall you are going to get a high quality product at a fair price. I had a pair arrive here just about a week ago and they have been my main set of headphones since. I can honestly say the iPhone FMJ’s have lived up to just what I have come to expect from Skullcandy products and I would not hesitate to recommend these to anyone looking for an upgrade to the standard iPhone headphones.
