We have heard a lot about the XO laptop being sent overseas to children in need, however up until now we have had little to report about the XO being used or given out here in the U.S.
Students at Birmingham, Alabama schools will become the first in the U.S. to receive an XO laptop. Mayor Larry Langford announced on Monday that students from first grade though eighth grade will each get a laptop and they will be given out on April 15, 2008. The students will be allowed to fully use the laptops, meaning they will be able to use them at school and also bring them home, they will however have to be returned at the end of their eight-grade year. The computers will also be controlled by the schools, so just in case one happens to get lost, the school system will be able to disable it.
Mayor Langford has already signed a purchase agreement for 15,000 of the XO laptops and is “proud that Birmingham is on its way to eliminating the so-called `digital divide’ and to ensuring that our children have state-of-the-art tools for education.”
