In a USA Today interview, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer suggests he hopes his 85 year old uncle will get a Zune soon. Perhaps his uncle has been swayed by the catchy iPod ads?
Ballmer goes on to talk about (bash) the iPhone and how Microsoft is all about software and owning the software market for phones. Ballmer points that the iPhone won’t get any real marketshare, but conceded Apple may make a lot of money.
From the article posted on USA Today’s website:
“There’s no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance. It’s a $500 subsidized item. They may make a lot of money. But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I’d prefer to have our software in 60% or 70% or 80% of them, than I would to have 2% or 3%, which is what Apple might get.”
Ballmer again reiterated, “No Zune Phone,” and credited Apples iPod/iTunes success to being in the music business first. Ha, funny Steve; that is like saying Windows success was based on the flying toasters…
