It’s starting to feel a bit like Windows, ain’t it? Only a couple months in and Sony’s announced that there is yet another PS3 firmware update (ver. 1.50, which I believe makes it the third update). The latest firmware adds the option of auto or manual sign-in to the Playstation Network and lets gamers select an image on their hard drive to use as a User Icon on the XrossMediaBar, They also added a Key Tone feature, the ability to delete backup data on the internal hard drive or external devices and the ability to enter Korean text the on-screen keyboard.
To install the update, just like before, you can use the sluggish System Update feature and watch the bar fill for the next hour, wait to get a game that has it installed or download it to your PC and slap it on a USB thumb drive to update through one of the seven USB ports.
Several blog sites have mentioned the “contactless payments” via a USB card reader peripheral will be available in Japan thanks to the latest upgrade but it was not part of the US upgrade list on Sony’s site (of course that doesn’t mean it’s not in there).
