Described by the company as “major technology”, the ZAGG box is the culmination of 6 years and $35 million. At this point, it seems tough to classify exactly what this thing does: it is a media aggregator, will record, store and stream your media in multiple formats so you can watch on TV or on your iPhone (or other mobile device), and don’t forget home automation: it can hook into your HVAC, lighting or even door locks and control them. Good luck figuring out what aisle to put this thing in at Best Buy.

“We are introducing a game-changing technology with the ZAGGbox which will appeal to everyone from geeks to grandmas,” said Brian Packer, VP of Marketing of ZAGG. “It is a very powerful system, and very simple to use.”

The ZAGG dream machine is said to cost “under $999” and should be formally launched in January 2010 shipping late Q1. The unit was announced a finalist in the I-Stage event put on by the CEA, (Producers of Consumer Electronics Show -CES).

With the new demand for 3D movies, RealD has decided to offer a line of premium of 3D glasses for retail sale. Instead of using the goofy version offered by a movie theater, you can use a pair of your own that reflects your personal style. The glasses are available as part of a licensing agreement between RealD and Look3D.

The glasses will be fitted as well as styled in a design that you like. The eyewear collection will be completely RealD compatible and be available for men, women and children. Look3D glasses feature interchangeable lenses to work with all 3D formats. The glasses will also be available in movie themes in expectation of some major 3D movie releases, such as Avatar, Toy Story 3 and A Christmas Carol. The glasses will be available for sale at movie theaters as well as online stores.

Retail pricing has yet to be released on the glasses and they are expected to be ready for purchase in December.

I see stuff in the tech world that drives me crazy. From products that should never have left the bar napkin to marketing schemes that should have stayed in the men’s room, here is what caught my eye this week:

Video Eyewear- more than just a geek look

Roku leaves off special sauce again

Publishers hate ebooks; stunt growth?

What the heck is Apple so nervous about?

Video eyewear to bring 3D to our homes

This is the response I got when I told my Editor, Iyaz, about my 3D revelation: “Oh, so you’re on crack this week. Good.” I don’t deny this thinking is pretty far out there.

Look at it this way: if we are no closer today to generating 3D image without glasses then we’ll have to accept glasses in the house. If we are committing to wearing ridiculous glasses in the house, then why not put high quality screens in them and forget about viewing angle and the like. The two concepts just seem to mesh together. Yes, you’ll have to buy glasses for everyone but how much different in cost will that be vs. a $3,000 LCD TV plus 3D player?

Roku to get upgrade but no Hulu?

Question: how do you make Roku box the hottest little black box again? Answer: Make it do Hulu. Done and done.

However, as Robert Nelson relates, Roku isn’t doing that. “Feature wise the Roku XR will see some improvements though, according to the rumors it will see the addition of a USB port as well as Wi-Fi 802.11n. Additionally, the power input was also upped from 1.5A to 2.5A.” No Flash?

With all the talk about Hulu going the paid route, this would is the missing link. Hulu needs to buy Roku or get them to build a Hulu player, which probably has enough of a brand name now to sell them. The missing link would bring Hulu paid subscriptions not just OK, but would sell like gangbusters enabling customers to ditch cable and satellite service and watch what they want, when they want without time shifting (TiVo) technology.

Ebooks everywhere; publishers -“we hate ebooks”

Seems almost everyday we are teased with another ebook reader, this week saw the Barnes and Noble Nook which manages to bring some sexy to readers int he form of a second color screen. Awesome right? Well not so fast because it the content you really want, not the gadget and publishers are totally messing with ebook versions.

It is like getting your iPod only to find out you’ve got to wait 2 months before you can get the latest Kate Perry album (OMG!!!). The Independent reported Steven King’s latest book would be release over a month after release in hardcover. A big “up yours” to ebook readers hoping to get a fair shake by publishers.

This leaves us consumers two choices: buy the hardcover or buy an ereader and wait. Gadget lovers hate waiting. This is a huge snub aimed to make bookstores money that might end up lowering book sales as publishers will have a more difficult time getting excitement up for the ebook release after the big hardcover release. It would be like advertising a movie but stopping one month before it opens. We just don’t have the attention span.

Apple acting all paranoid again

So this week, big MS finally got around to launching Windows 7, their biggest product in a decade. Yeah for them! Apple was all over them like ice cream stains on a hot, sweaty summer day

The Windows 7 threat was deemed large enough that Apple used the good ol’ three pronged response:
1. Release financials a day earlier than normal and brags about it’s most profitable quarter ever and a gajillion iPhone sales kicking everyone’s butts. Recession? What recession?
2. Release a shiny new Mac line the day before. These quite possibly could be the shiniest computers ever built.
3. Release a slew of witty, pithy “I am a Mac” ads that really make us giggle about John Hodgeman’s Miami Vice look.

Does Apple feel bad about Ballmer’s whole “we are on 9 out of 10 PCs” or is Apple telling us that Windows 7 is that good as the blogosphere seems to agree with? I am not sure what it is but I suspect if you got on the PA system at Apple and shouted, “cops” the building would be empty in 15 seconds flat. Just saying.

Section: Video, Accessories, HDTV, Portable Video, Gadgets / Other, Lifestyle, Gaming, Accessories

Another day, another video eyewear announcement, right? Wrong. Down at the very bottom of the release announcing the shipping of the Vuzix Wrap 310 is something about 3D compatibility; this gadget is compatible with the major 3D formats. That got me thinking: with all the push from studios and home entertainment to 3D, maybe this revolution will skip the TV.

My biggest problem with 3D is getting around the glasses: to get 3D today, you’ve got to wear glasses. So, why not have glasses with screens inside them; turn a requirement into something better by adding super big, super clear images (Vuzix says their Wrap 310 has the equivalent of a 55 inch screen at 10 feet)? If the wave of the future is 3D, then Vuzix might just have their timing down.

The Vuzix Wrap is available starting today for $245.95 and they do look very similar to a pair of sunglasses (scoring much lower on the dork factor, thankfully). These shades offer regular video viewing like other video eyewear. Besides being upgradeable, input accessories are coming:

“The Wrap 310 also brings advanced features to the video eyewear category that no product has. With capabilities to add tracking and cameras that enable augmented reality and incredible gaming experiences; there is nothing like it on the market” added Vuzix CEO, Paul Travers.

So now we are talking about augmented reality and potentially live video input along with 3D capabilities. So many issues just became solved that video eyewear could become the LCD Flat panel of the next decade. Imagine sharing #D-immersive content with family, each in their own video eyewear in what used to be called your TV room.

This is going to be a pair of video eyewear to watch and the pair to grab if you are in the market.

Now, here is what we can expect feature wise:

Plays up content up to 1080p

eSATA, Ethernet, and USB inputs

Composite and HDMI outputs

Bitstream or Dolby Digital and DTS Surround audio

Additionally, it seems to have a wide variety of supported file types including MPEG1/2/4, RM/RMVB, VC-1 and H.264 for video as well as MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG, FLAC and AIFF for audio. The O!Play is also able to stream and view JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF, TIFF image files.

Otherwise, the unit ships with a remote control and a set of composite cables. The one drawback here, aside from not having a HDMI cable included, is that the O!Play does not have built-in Wi-Fi. Of course, getting back to that price, $99, that is not all that surprising. It seems to be a nice option for those looking to not spend a ton of money.

A lot of people use ZAGG’s invisibleShield product to protect their electronics since they add little bulk but protect screens and other parts of your device from scratches. Now, ZAGG has picked up the rights to the “Golden Shellback” technology that is now going by the name of “HzO.” HzO is a technology that coats gadgets to make them waterproof. All of the components are covered in a transparent coating—videos show devices like a BlackBerry or iPod touch continuing to function under water. Take a look at the video below to see this technology in action. Expect to see ZAGG offer some kind of HzO service or to start selling their own coated goods like ColorWare PC does. As a spaz, it’s only a matter of time before my computer winds up in some water or coffee. I look forward to seeing ZAGG use this tech.

Amazon is getting in on the cable business. The AmazonBasics line of cables is Amazon’s audio/video and computer cables that come in Amazon’s Frustration Free Packaging (meaning no blister-packs). Assuming AmazonBasics are decent quality cables, this is an interesting development. Finding a particular cable on Amazon.com can be somewhat troublesome with so many different vendors selling various brands of cables. The AmazonBasics line ought to streamline picking up odds and ends for your computer or home theater.

I would imagine that certain companies will not like the idea of Amazon pushing its own branded goods over their own. Would you pick up a $99 Monster HDMI cable or an AmazonBasics HDMI cable for $8.94?

Right now, the AmazonBasics line includes USB cables, FireWire cables, CD-Rs, DVR+R, DVD-Rs, networking cables, and various home theater cables. Prices seem quite reasonable when compared to some other brands. I wouldn’t expect to see televisions or portable electronics under the AmazonBasics brand, but Amazon could always come up with some other clever name for that - maybe AmazonElectronics?

At Intel’s Developer Forum, companies Point Grey and Fresco Logic are showing off the world’s first USB 3.0 streaming HD video camera. The unit streams 1920 x 1080 video at 60 frames per second and streams uncompressed from the Point Grey camera to the Fresco Logic controller. Clearly, USB 3.0 is fast.

“We are very excited to partner with Fresco Logic and be able to visually demonstrate the bandwidth offered by USB 3.0,” says Vlad Tucakov, Director of Sales and Marketing at Point Grey. “One of the potential benefits of the increased bandwidth of USB 3.0 is that it allows the main processor to handle compression. This means that different types of compression can be used for different applications and that some applications, like face recognition, can work on uncompressed video data for increased performance. We certainly see USB 3.0 as a key interface technology for machine and computer vision, and one we plan to integrate into future Point Grey imaging products.”

Allowing applications to pick and choose what definition video is required for processing is a big step forward and would open up things like power saving, faster performance, and better processing. Video is one category that is sure to benefit from the autobahn-like speeds of USB 3.0, but not the only.

Any portable storage device that connects via USB can take advantage of the higher speeds. Even things like iPhones could see a huge boost in sync times (you know, if Apple figures out the quirks behind iPod back up and the other hiccups in syncing). The act of connecting a device and walking away while it syncs could soon be a thing of the past.

Vuzix just recently introduced its Wrap line of wearable displays. The Wrap 310 is supposed to float a 16:9 55-inch screen in front of your eyes at a resolution of 428 x 240. The biggest difference between the Wrap and other models from Vuzix is the styling. These glasses look more like sunglasses than a futuristic visor. The Wrap can accept any regular headphones and also has a cable that leads to a remote control. That remote control has an input for video adapters for things like the iPod. Expect a Zune adapter if there’s a demand. There is also a VGA adapter so you can hook up the Vuzix to your laptop and veg out. The device runs on 2 AA batteries and the claimed battery life is 6-7 hours. It ships out in October and will cost $249.95.

I got to test out the Vuzix Wrap 310 for a little while. The styling is an improvement and I could see how people would like this better than the visor. The Vuzix was getting video from an iPod touch (first generation). The glasses slipped over my prescription glasses easily. The display was bright and large. It’s definitely a watchable image if you can get past the screen door effect. Since the remote accepts adapters for video inputs, it ought to be relatively future proof. Perhaps we’ll see a component video version soon.

If you put your home theater components very far away from your actual screen, Gefen also introduced the Gefen Wireless RS-232 Extender. It has the same set up as before with a sender and receiver unit. You can control your devices from 1000 feet away and since this extender uses RF, there’s no line of sight necessary.

Hooking up your devices to your display can be troublesome if you run out of inputs. Gefen also introduced the TV Multi-Format Switcher. It can support up to 10 different sources. Here’s the break down:

The TV Multi-Format Switcher connects two s-video, two composite, two component, one VGA and three HDMI inputs to one HDMI display. All analog video formats are accompanied by two-channel L/R analog audio, while the three HDMI inputs come with supplemental digital (TOSlink; S/PDIF) audio.

Lastly, is the GefenTV Wireless for HDMI 60Ghz Extender. The maximum range of this wireless HDMI technology is 30 feet and Gefen recommends line of sight between the transmitter and receiver units. You’ll get 1080p HD with 5.1 audio wirelessly.

What’s this miracle of modern technology cost? $29.95? Nope, that price isn’t even close. Try approximately $850. The maximum distance between the receiver and transmitter is 25 meters. No word on when the Wireless HDMI Link will be available in the United States.

Yoostar users need to choose a role in the scene they’ve purchased and then it is time to shoot. Once users are finished, they can upload to the Yoostar site where links can be sent via Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.

According to the FAQs, you can’t do a lot with your recorded performance besides upload it to their site. Those hoping to add special effects via other video editing programs are out of luck. People hoping to download the video to other computers or portable video players will be disappointed, because Yoostar does not let you do that either.

Yoostar is $169.99 and is available now and comes stock with 12 scenes.

It’s an easy situation to imagine. You’re traveling somewhere with just a netbook, but you want to show something to more people than can fit around that tiny screen. An external monitor of some sort would be nice, but what about a projector? Usually that would would mean lugging around a huge machine that would need to plug into a wall and just generally be a hassle to set up. With 3M’s new projector that issue is gone.

The new projector from 3M is small enough to fit in your pocket, laptop bag, purse, or whatever you use. It doesn’t even need to to be plugged in, lasting for 2-4 hours on a single battery charge. The tiny projector, the MPro120 produces a VGA picture (640x480), at anywhere between 8 and 50 inches large. It also projects at up to 10 lumens so brightness shouldn’t be too much of an issue. The MPro120 even packs in two half-watt speakers so no longer will you have to worry about having video with no sound on your projector.

The MPro120 looks to be a neat device, though it might be worth waiting for the next generation. While it is an industry standard for projectors, VGA can be very limiting to what you want to show. It’ll be nice when projectors finally get to resolutions that equal or surpass netbooks. Though, if VGA doesn’t bother you, the MPro120 definitely has it’s uses that would make it a good choice for anyone who needs a tiny projector to use anywhere that the have a wall. The MPro120 costs £299.00.

S1Digital introduced what it calls the “Digital Entertainment Platform.” This system uses three parts: “an Entertainment Server, Media Center clients and a control solution.” You load all your content on the Entertainment Server which can support up to 32TB of hard drive space. The server also has a Blu-ray player that can also play CDs and DVDs and supports CableCards. Next up a Media Center client can play content from the server. Their third part of their solution is a touch screen controller. If you’re up for their system, you can buy only one version of the clients yourself for $1799. For the rest, you’ll need to contact a dealer that does home theater installations. Judging the price based on that media center client, you can expect to pay quite the hefty amount to get this system in your home. If you are a geek, you could probably build yourself a pretty great solution using a Drobo, a server, some wired Ethernet, and small PCs hooked up to your televisions for less.

With the allure of Internet music services like Pandora and Rhapsody setting up a home theater system that incorporate them can be a bit difficult without having to put a whole computer in the system. Sure, having a computer in the setup would be cool, but when’s the last time you wanted to browse the Internet on your TV? A simple solution that allows you to have access to some of those Internet media services is really all you need. That’s what Onkyo is trying to deliver.

The new Onkyo TX-NR807 is home theater receiver that in addition to having an enormous number of ports for audio and video has an added ethernet port. It can connect to your home network and Internet for some nifty features. The TX-NR807 uses the Internet connection and an on-screen UI to connect Pandora, Rhapsody, Sirius Internet Radio, and vTuner for easy music/radio playback. The receiver also supports DLNA so you can stream nearly any audio file from any computer or storage also connected to your home network, though strangely there is no word on streaming video.

The Onkyo TX-NR807 also makes it easy to program the remote to connect to the receiver, TV and any other supported device. Through the on-screen UI, all you have to do is select the correct device, and the receiver transmits the code to the remote, which can support up to four macros. It will take a lot of the guess work out of programming the home theater to work without have to use five different remotes for the five different boxes or devices. It will be useful as the TX-NR807 can use connect to any device you could possibly think of in any nearly any possible way, which is to say more ways than most people are even aware of.

Atlona Technologies has recently come out with a pretty interesting, although I am not sure how practical it is. Atlona Technologies is known for their products pertaining to audio and video, and the AT-HD530 is no different.

Basically, it receives the HDMI signal or DVI signal from computers, GPS, Apple TV, etc., and will then down-convert the quality to fit analog S-Video or composite video to display down-converted video on TVs or computer monitors that do not support HD video. NTSC or PAL formatted video can be converted to the other format instantly. It sounds like an interesting concept due to the fact not every computer monitor and TV can support HD. And since HD videos are gradually gaining popularity, it could be of use. Atlona Technologies cites that their product would be of use for broadcasters, video production engineers, and end users.

The AT-HD530 is set to be available in August for $299. A copy of the press release is below.

Atlona Technologies soon to Release their new HDMI/DVI to Composite and S-Video Down-Converter, the AT-HD530

Atlona Technologies, solutions based manufacturer of Audio Video connectivity accessories, is soon to releases new HDMI/DVI to Composite and S-Video Down-Converter, the AT-HD530

Atlona Technologies, leading manufacturer of Audio Video Connectivity accessories, has announced its plan to release a new down-converter, the AT-HD530. This unit is designed to send HDMI or DVI digital signal from desired sources such as PCs, Macs, GPS Systems, Apple TVs, Camcorder or Video Game, and down-convert the signal to Analog S-Video or Composite Video with Audio. This device will covert high-definition television video signals to standard-definition video that can be viewed on conventional television receivers or computer monitors for all users.

Along with a featured HDMI/DVI loop-out, this converter has the ability to support resolutions of up to 1080p for HDTVs and up to UXGA (1600x1200@60Hz) with PC or Mac Computers. In addition, this unit is able to automatically detect and down convert resolutions to those of to PAL or NTSC formats. Atlona’s new down-converter will be perfect for nearly all computer applications, as well as those used by Broadcasters, Video Production Engineers, and end users alike.

Atlona’s AT-HD530 Down-Converter will be in stock late August with an MSRP of $299.00.

It was only a matter of time before we saw the Internet infiltrate our television, and it looks like Verizon is ready to launch their new type of Widget/App store for FiOS subscribers. Verizon has been working with Facebook, Twitter, Veoh, Blip.tv, ESPN, and Dailymotion in order to bring the best of the web to the TV. All FiOS users will have access to these great services and Internet video via the new Widget Bazaar.

In terms of the Widget Bazaar, subscribers will have the ability to update Facebook statuses, view friends profiles, as well as pictures. For Twitter users, you have the ability to check out tweets pertaining to the program or movie you are currently watching. It isn’t simply Twitter on the television, Verizon wants to tailor Twitter to what you are currently watching. At this time, it is not possible to tweet from your television, but that should come to fruition in the future.

If you participate in ESPN’s Fantasy Football game, you have the ability to view real time Fantasy Football points and statistics, box scores, rosters, and additional player information. This is free of charge as long as you are a member with ESPN’s Fantasy program.

If you are a Home Media DVR subscriber, then you will be happy to know you have access to Internet video such as Blip.tv, Dailymotion, and Veoh. For those of us who like to amass a large video collection, you have the ability to view videos stored on your PC through your television. Both of these services are free of charge.

For additional app development, Verizon plans to release the SDK in order to allow open development of new widgets for FiOS subscribers. More developers will have the ability to reach a wider audience, not just mobile users, and make a profit. Verizon hopes to add more free and monetary apps to the Widget Bazaar.

Already, the new Microsoft Zune HD is looking pretty good, with its HD playback and all. At the E3 tradeshow today, Microsoft unveiled an announcement, which didn’t really come as a surprise but definitely got people excited for the latest Microsoft device. The Xbox 360 would be able stream movies and television shows using the Zune video service.

Within the new LIVE service, the Xbox 360 has the ability to stream various content in 1080p resolution as well as 5.1 surround sound. Of course, the video service has been revamped with the announcement of the Zune HD. Microsoft looks to utilize these two tools, combined with the vast popularity of the 360 to solidify their rank in MP3 players and gaming consoles. Until now, Xbox Live has only been available in eight countries, but it will be expanded to reach ten additional countries. In total, US, Canada, UK, France, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Spain, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. With the addition of other countries, Microsoft hopes that even more people will be able to use Xbox Live for not only playing multiplayer games, but also watching videos in HD.

Microsoft claims the video service streaming will start nearly instantly as it starts with a low bitrate and fast download speed, then it starts increasing bitrate to reach HD video. At E3 Microsoft announced a few other features such as Project Natal, Movie Party, as well as Facebook support. For all the latest E3 news, be sure to check out our sister site, Gamertell.com.

A lot of people are putting more money into their living room because they are spending more time at home. So what do you need to put together the best experience in your living room? There’s the obvious stuff like a large screen television and that surround sound system. Then there’s the non-obvious stuff.

Get a good universal remote

Face the reality of how you use your equipment. You could use all of the remotes that came with your components like a DVD player, the TV, and the receiver, but that’s just not worth the effort. A universal remote is a hugely important part of any real home theater setup. Bite the bullet, pay the $100 for a Logitech Harmony Remote. The macros are definitely worth it.

Trust in wires

Many home theater components need an Internet connection these days. While you could try to have an all wireless setup, a wired network is more reliable. Depending on your home’s layout, getting a wired connection to your home theater may not be easy. Getting ready made cables for long runs can also get pricey. If you’re inclined, make your own Ethernet cables and save yourself some money.

Get an Ethernet switch

Once you get an Ethernet connection to your home theater, put in a network switch so you can connect your various components. If you’re still squeamish about making your own cables, get a powerline adapter. You probably won’t have the same speeds as Ethernet, but it’s better than nothing and may be faster than your Wi-Fi network.

Get a HDMI switch

You can find older models of HDTVs for low prices. Perhaps you even picked one up during the last holiday season. One of the major drawbacks of older HDTVs is a lack of HDMI ports.

You can get a receiver that supports multiple HDMI inputs and it will act like a switcher for your PS3, XBox 360, TiVO, or whatever. If you pick up a budget receiver, it may have limited HDMI options. No problem. Grab a HDMI switch. It adds another component to your setup, but it expands your options when you want to purchase a HDTV or receiver.

Protect your components

Invest in a hefty surge protector. Don’t go into the bargain bin of your hardware store for one of these. This device could protect every single component in case of a power surge. You spent a lot of money on your devices, don’t protect it with a glorified extension cord.

In no way is this an exhaustive list of everything you need, but these are things that are easily overlooked. Hopefully you can use this advice to make your home theater experience fantastic.

Gadgetell Review: The Seagate Showcase DVR Expander

There are some reviews that are a bit difficult to compose. Sometimes the products are so intricate that it takes a whole lot of work to boil them down to a brief review. Other times the products are just so simple that there isn’t much to say about them beside “it works” and “it is great.” Thankfully, this review is the latter.

I am not sure about you but I am regularly running out of space on my living room DVR (from Time Warner Cable) and am forced to delete movies and/or TV shows that I haven’t have time to watch. I could opt to record in SD instead of HD (which requires significantly less space), but that is just too big of a sacrifice. With the Seagate Extender these problems dissolve away.

What is it?

The Seagate Showcase DVR Storage Expander allows you to expand your hard drive space on your DVR. It is available in 500GB or 1TB versions. Each version comes in USB 2.0 or eSATA variations. Prices range from $119.99 to $164.99 depending on configuration.

The Good

The Showcase is a plug and play DVR expander via USB 2.0 or an eSATA connection. It adds up to 200 additional hours of HD shows or 1000 hours in standard definition. To get it going you turn off your DVR and then plug the large power block into the wall and the Showcase. Finally, do the same for the USB or eSATA cable (now between your DVR and the Showcase). Once this is complete (a.k.a. 30 seconds later) turn your DVR back on, at which time you should see a prompt asking if you want to “reformat your external drive.”

Upon saying yes, you are done—your DVR will do the rest. It will fill up your external drive as the internal drive reaches capacity and play off of either drive, based on where the program is recorded.

The Bad

The only downfall is that if/when you disconnect the Showcase and move it to another DVR (even if from the same provider and same model DVR), the device forces you to reformat your drive and lose those saved shows.

The Crux

If you’re looking for a way to expand your DVR without hacking, the Seagate Showcase DVR Storage Expander is a very good option.

Ok, ok…so you can’t go to Newegg and buy it just yet. But GE announced just today that they’ve made some huge steps forward in the whole process, and now just have to figure out how to make their lab success work in affordable mass-produced products.

Talk about the the ultimate in space saving! I think they will get to take over that slogan from the Tupperware people (or whoever has it right now). Richard Doherty, an analyst at the technology research firm Envisioneering says that “This could be the next generation of low-cost storage.”

This “low-cost storage” is built on holographic technology. More and more on things like credit cards, you are seeing those 3D images on the card being used for security reasons. With holography, it can store the 1’s and 0’s of digital data also. The stored data is encoded in light patterns in light sensitive material. Then, to read the recorded data, the holograms act like a mirror letting you see the refracted light patterns. When a laser is shined on them, voila! Magic. The data “appears” and can be pulled and deciphered.

Although the potential of holographic technology has been known for quite some time, since the early 1960s as a matter of fact, it hasn’t become the road most traveled mainly due to cost factors. But with this latest development by GE, many analysts believe that could be changing. This is due in large part to GE researchers taking the path less traveled in their approach. They use what is called microholographic storage. This storage depends on less complex, tinier holograms than previously concentrated on.

The biggest challenge for the research team was to find a way to allow these smaller holograms to reflect enough light. Their GE lab in NY made the breakthrough—use a 200-fold increase in the reflective power. This increase puts them at the lower range of light reflections that are readable by current Blu-ray players. “We’re in the ballpark,” said Brian Lawrence, the scientist who leads GE’s holographic storage program. “We’ve crossed the threshold so we’re readable.”

With this approach, the holograms are scattered over the disc kind of like they are on CDs, DVDs and Blu-Ray discs. So, the same player could read them all. The big difference here is storage. While a standard DVD holds 5-9 gigabytes of data, and a Blu-ray comes in 25 or 50-gigabytes flavors, a microholographic disc could hold a whopping 500 gigabytes.

But of course, the bottom line to many is “how much is this gonna cost?” When Blu-ray first came out in 2006, it cost about $1 a gigabyte for a 25-gigabyte disc. It’s about half that now. GE predicts that when their product is introduced (and they are thinking about 2011 or 2012), that holographic discs are going to cost way less than that…more like 10 cents per gigabyte..and keep falling.

They plan to market and sell to places like TV networks, medical researchers and movie studios before heading on to the corporate and consumer market. But they believe the time is near. And I think Bert Hesselink, a Stanford professor and expert in the field summed it up well. ““If this can really be done, then GE’s work promises to be a huge advantage in commercializing holographic storage technology.”

Get those TiVos ready! Because we told you it was coming, and now it is here. Today is the first day that TiVo HD, TiVo HD XL, or Series 3 subscribers can download high definition TV shows and movies right off of the amazon.com website.

Amazon takes on iTunes

As I predicted after poking around Amazon’s site a while ago (when I found pages that weren’t really supposed to be found), the cost for a current season download is $2.99, and their new releases for movies are going for $3.99 to $4.99. So the price is still in direct competition with iTunes. It should be interesting to see how it plays out now that they are obviously going to try to give iTunes a run for their money.

How it works

When users run a search on TiVo, they will get Amazon’s HD selection included with all the broadcast and cable options. Tara Maitra, General Manager and VP of Content Services and Advertising Sales at TiVo Inc. says “Our customers now have access to a new world of ultra high quality HD television and movie choices, many of which are available when the DVDs are released, something no other DVR, cable, or satellite company can match.”

All you have to do to get started with activating your TiVo DVR is log into Amazon at this page. You complete a one-time registration, which allows you to use the remote to search and browse the Amazon selections and download your choices right onto your TiVo DVR.

Will it take off?

Bill Carr, Amazon VP Music and Video is excited about the partnership. “TiVo is enabling customers to access our unparalleled library of hit movies and TV shows, bringing them directly into the home where friends and family can watch from the comfort of the couch. Together with TiVo, Amazon Video On Demand is excited to offer HD and increase the selection, quality, and convenience for the TiVo community.”

Whether or not it will have the video quality people will demand remains to be seen, as well as the selection. If VoD is done the right way…it could obviously take off in a major way, even more so than it has yet to do yet. But, you have to convince people that the service you’re selling is the best one. Is it Amazon’s? Guess we’ll have to wait and see how they stack up.

For more information, check out Amazon’s TiVo page.

In their concise listing, Microsoft talks about needing help to shape the future of entertainment and to do so, they need an experienced software designer “to help deliver great digital entertainment features into the living room, including on demand music and video.” In addition, the listing goes on to say, “Experience with online services API development is a must, product will provide a rich online media experience delivering music and video from the cloud. A passion for UX and digital media is a must.” The rest of the listing is about necessary qualifications.

On the Zune team, part of them are responsible for working out actual hardware, while the other half of the team works on designing specialized software. Obviously, the person who gets this job would be working with the software part of the Zune team to create a device or software for HDTV.

Microsoft has a few choices in how they want to go about this, they can either add a feature to the Xbox 360, add something to the Zune, or create a totally new device compatible with both devices. If the Apple TV comes to mind, I wouldn’t be surprised because that sounds like what they want to create.

Hey, if you are a software designer looking for some new work, hit up Microsoft and see if you can the job.

World’s Largest Working Cell Phone

You think getting a small cell phone is a good idea? Maybe you think a Palm Pre or an iPhone is the way to go. You crazy fool. Don’t you know that you should want the world’s largest working cell phone? Samsung put together a 15 foot wide Samsung Messager and put it on display in Chicago. No more complaining about a tiny keyboard or screen.

This huge phone holds a new world’s record according to Guinness, so remember that for your next bar bet. If you are really bored, you can actually use the phone to make phone calls and send text messages for free until March 15th at which time it will be returned to Paul Bunyan.

World’s First VHS-Blu-ray Player

Panasonic has just introduced the world’s first Blu-ray-VHS dual player. Panasonic’s DMP-BD70V lets the user play (I’m sure you’ll never guess) VHS tapes, Blu-ray discs, as well as DVDs and CDs. All this for $399.95.

Who on earth is this for? This is for the grandson who wants to sneak in a BD player in his grandparents home. Maybe grandma won’t notice that there’s an extra tray in that VHS player.

Or maybe one day you will get a message from someone that uses VHS tapes to communicate (like on “30 Rock”) and you’ll need to have a tape player. This might be the answer.

Section: Video, Accessories, Imaging, Accessories, Digital Cameras

NVIDIA, one of the two largest companies in the field of graphics chips is looking to get into the CPU market. It won’t necessarily be showing up in your desktop computer anytime soon, but the idea is still there. Actually, the chips will most likely find their way into notebooks and netbooks which need to conserve as much space as possible to make smaller machines or make room for gigantic batteries.

The chips will most likely be based on the x86 architecture that Intel uses for all of its chips, meaning it will most likely be very easy to implement into existing OSes. The chips would work great for machines that need to have integrated graphics, or chips that can d everything from simple processes to graphics. Its strange to think of doing that right now, but if the chips work out well, they could easily replace the Atom as the netbook chip of choice, assuming we’re still using netbooks in 2-3 years.

There is the potential for some issues to arise from NVIDIA’s plan. Intel might not be very happy in having more competition in the netbook space, especially if it uses the same technology. It could only mean good things for consumers, though. If the new chips cause competition to heat up between Intel and NVIDIA (not to mention Via and ARM) there just might be some excitement in the netbook space come a few years,

Although Vuzix has had their “iWear” around for a bit now, this is the first set that offers the 16:9 ratio. The AV310 uses two high resolution LCDs and dual stereo headphones. The viewer, which was developed from U.S. military technology, generates 24-bit true color (that means 16 million colors), and a 28’ field of view. The LCDs offer 428 x 240 resolution, and can be focused individually from +2 down to -5 diopters, and tilted up to 15 degrees for a custom fit. The nose piece is hypoallergenic and adjustable, and the headphones (with replaceable earbuds) produce great, crisp sound quality. There is also an optional head strap. Also included is one lithium AA battery which will provide up to 8 hours of continuous operation, iPod cable, A/V cable, and carrying case.

Hey, maybe you could buy a set of these and watch some of those movies you recorded with that video camera you bought her! wink wink.

TiVo’s comeback can be tied to two events, the replacement of founder Mike Ramsay with Tom Rogers as CEO, and winning $104.6 million in damages from a patent suit against EchoStar Communications, parent company of Dish Network. The money cleared up the last of TiVo’s debt, and allows them to continue their new direction: adding services to make the TiVo unit more useful and finding new cable companies to distribute the TiVo box.

TiVo has added support for Rhapsody, Amazon’s Video on Demand, YouTube, Nickelodeon, and Netflix. They have also contracted with cable giants Comcast and Cox Communications to distribute TiVo services on their set top boxes. But with bad news everywhere, it’s nice to have a ray of sunshine, no matter how short.

According to a new study by ABI Research, the wave of the future for remote controls is RF. Expect a lot of RF remotes by 2014. The great majority of remotes still use infrared (IR) so you need a line of sight between your remote and your device. How often have you had to crook your arm just to make sure your TiVo got the signal?

The study says RF is the future since it can be used to convey data back from the device you are controlling and doesn’t need line of sight to operate. ABI Research also says that companies like Sony will start shipping RF remotes soon with its Bravia line.

With TVs getting flatter and flatter, there is little room to place your devices under your television. There are tons of boxes that connect to your TV; a component closet is probably in many of our futures. IR just doesn’t work well with that kind of system. Let’s see how long it takes for you to break the habit of pointing the remote at your TV once everything moves to RF.

Monster is closing in on the Holy Grail of HDTV, wireless distribution. And while their new distribution product isn’t wireless, it does allow you to stream HD throughout the house without running new wires, assuming your home is already wired for cable TV. The Wireless Digital Express HD from Monster, introduced at CES, consists of a transmitter and receiver that connect and transfer 1080p signals across the existing coax cable in the wall.

Based on the idea of powerline distribution of data, the transmissions can travel 330 ft from any HD source. Inputs consist of two HDMI ports, two component, one composite video/S-video with audio, optical digital and coax digital. Outputs are coax digital, optical digital F-connector for coax, and three IR emitters. There is even a wireless solution for that wall mounted HDTV. The RX-1 receiver integrates into any Monster wall mount, continuing their theme of “no new wires.” No word yet on a release date, but look for it in the next few months. The price? $999 for the whole set.

When people think of an antenna, they usually picture the old-fashioned “rabbit ears” that used to adorn the top of television sets. However, the new antennas that are being released by Audiovox have a completely different look and capabilities. These new antennas, released through the RCA and TERK divisions will have a flat appearance, measuring 10” square and less than 1” thick. Getting an antenna is a great way to pick up HD television free.

The new line of antennas will be a mix of both indoor and outdoor devices. Models expected to be released this year, include the RCA ANT800, TERK FDTVO, RCA ANT1600 and TERK FDTV1A. The new outdoor antennas, the RCA ANT800 and the TERK FDTVO will have a water-resistant and UV shell to ensure protection against the elements. The 360 degree design will also ensure that you receive digital TV signals from all directions.

The indoor antennas, including the RCA ANT1600 will also possess the omnidirectional feature in order to receive good reception on digital television channels. An amplified version of this same antenna, the RCA ANH1650B will permit reception of both high definition and UHF/VHF signals. Most of the models are expected to arrive in stores by the spring and will all retail for less than $100.

Back in March of 2008, we reported that Myka created a BitTorrent box that was capable of directly receiving your Torrent downloads and replaying them on a TV. It’s a competitor to Apple TV, and people who torrent a lot would definitely like the Myka box. When the product was announced back in March, it was set to start shipping in the summer, but nearly half a year later, it looks like that time has come.

Myka was having trouble meeting financial deadlines, so the had to put the Myka operation to a halt until recently. They got their factory based in China running again and users who ordered a Myka should expect their unit within 4-6 weeks. The Myka receives direct torrent downloads using LAN, or Wi-Fi, and it’s preloaded BitTorrent software, and it can connect to your TV using Composite, S-Video, or SPDIF. The product sells in various models including an 80GB, 160GB, or 500GB model. If you want to buy a Myka now, they cost $299, $349 or $459, respectively.

HD video through your house’s electrical

Section: Video, Accessories, HDTV

As more and more people get HDTVs, the TVs themselves get thinner and thinner, making them easier to hang on walls. However, hanging an LCD or plasma HDTV on the wall can be quite annoying when trying to connect any sort of media player to it. It requires an extra stand, or a shelf, or something near the TV to connect them. It can be a bit of a pain and can be annoying to look at with all those wires running to the TV.

Audiovox showed off its solution to the eyesore of all those cables with the Acoustic Research HDP100 HD Powerlink System at CES 2009. The system allows you to send audio and video from your device to your TV. Normally, you’d expect this to do it wirelessly, but the HDP100 actually works by transmitting the signals through the electrical wiring in your house. As long as both the transmitting and receiver devices are plugged directly into the wall, the signal can be used, preferably with both devices in the same room.

The technology seems like a cool idea, sending signal through electrical wiring sounds a bit strange, though. Presumably the devices can’t be too far apart, but even just a few feet away should put the media devices far enough away from the TV so they can by out of the way. The receiver can even be wall mounted near the TV if that’s what you’re looking for. However, at $400 it might not be worth it to some people who don’t find running wires too much of a bad thing. If you shop around, you may be able to get it cheaper.

Connected devices are everywhere. Compositor wants to put together a solution for the tech savvy so you can have a connected living room using their Meeseries of devices.

Gadgetell saw their devices at CES and some of us were thoroughly unimpressed. The MeeBox and MeeCeiver system allows you to watch your digital content on your television. If I remember right, the MeeCeiver attaches to your television while the MeeBox sends your images, audio, and video to the MeeCeiver. Checking Compositor’s website, there really is no information to tell you what exactly the devices do.

Their system included connected digital picture frames. All these devices connect to surveillance cameras if you should choose to use them that way.

Now what made my cohorts walk away from a demo? Well, the device doesn’t really offer anything new. The interface was very clunky. When I asked, “Is this interface the final one or are you working on it?” The response was that the clunky interface was actually the final version. Then I was alone talking to the Compositor guys.

There are plenty of devices that bring your digital content to your television right now. Compositor did nothing to really differentiate itself from the others (other than a very clunky interface). That is not a distinguishing feature any company wants. Perhaps if they work on that interface, they will have a chance. Personally, I think that their products are a couple of revisions away from being something worth buying.

New inventions have allowed entertainment lovers to enjoy and control the way that they watch programs in ways never before imagined. SmartLabs has now introduced the IRLinc Transmitter, an INSTEON to IR converter, a device with an easy plug in design that allows you to remotely control your home theater.

One of the major complaints of electronics owners is that their home theater requires numerous remotes in order to operate. The IRLinc Transmitter eliminates extra accessories by controlling multiple IR and INSTEON devices at once.

Using a controller such as KeypadLinc or RemoteLinc, you can set up buttons, including play, stop and volume functions, to control your home music or theater system. The way that it works is that the user will have to teach the device the codes that are utilized by their other remote controls. Once setup is done, you can control various IR products as a part of a home automation system. The product will work to control sound systems, home theaters and even electronic drapes.

The IRLinc Transmitter has a planned release date of March 16, 2009 and online stores like Smarthome.com are already accepting pre-orders. The current retail price is $90.

“We offer something for everyone—from multifunction universal remotes that sell for less than $30 and replacement handsets for satellite and cable boxes to high-performance models for consumers who want a high degree of control over their home theater systems without trading away operational simplicity,” said David Geise, president of Audiovox Accessories Corporation.. “The AR XsightTM line and other models we’re introducing at CES put Audiovox in an excellent position to further increase share in a market that the Consumer Electronics Association expects to grow 2 to 4 percent a year through 2012. In terms of dollars, much of that growth will come from high-end remote controls like the Acoustic Research XsightTM models.”

The Acoustic Research ARR103G is designed to control home theater systems with iPod docking stations or an Apple TV media center. It offers a media mode for controlling docking stations and a master power feature that allows up to 3 A/V devices to be powered on with a single button press. It’s suggested retail price is $29.99

Finally, Audiovox is offering two new remotes aimed specifically at young kids. The blue OARK02BA and red OARK02R are made of a special antimicrobial plastic. They offer parental controls and 8 keys preprogrammed to access kid friendly channels on DIRECTV. The blue model will be available for $22.99 and the red for $19.99.
