The design is simple and elegant with touchscreen controls. The speakers are only 2W, so don’t expect to be blasting music in large spaces. They even threw in a built in mic so you can pair it to your Bluetooth enabled phone and use it as a speaker phone. Also, the unit can be used as a pair of wired speakers using an included cable. The Solar Sound is available today for $99.99.

If you enjoy going on long bike rides, then you probably bring your iPod or MP3 player along for the ride. The problem with that is the headphones could get tangled up and that could become dangerous. Until now, I can’t really think of any MP3 players specifically designed for bicyclists, except for the new Podio.

The Podio has two main features that makes it stand out, one being it can attach to any sized handlebars, and the other being a built-in speaker on the device itself. I’m not sure if it has a normal headphone jack, but I’m sure it would. In addition, it comes with a 20 hour battery life, so the Podio won’t die on any bike ride, and it comes with 2GB of storage space. 2GB isn’t a whole lot of space, but it’s decent enough. I wouldn’t purchase this MP3 player to become your main portable music device, but I would purchase it if I biked for long periods of time by myself.

Unfortunately, no word on pricing or availability at this time.

Jabra unleashes new BT stereo headset. Thinking iPhone 3.0?

Section: Audio, Headphones, Speakers, Communications, Accessories, Mobile, Trade Shows, CTIA

Today at CTIA in Las Vegas, Jabra is announcing two new products: the Halo Bluetooth stereo headset and the SP200 speaker phone. The headset is due out in May ‘09 and the speaker phone this month.

The Halo

The Halo headset features Jabra’s Noise Blackout technology and claims to work with any Bluetooth phone or mp3 player. According to Jabra, if connected to a mobile phone and listening to music, the headset music will fade out so you can take the call; no word if it has an integrated microphone to actually take the call. On the whole, it looks very sleek.

With iPhone 3.0 software being opened up to Bluetooth stereo accessories, Jabra’s Halo could be a big winner for all of us that hate cords. Of course, Jabra built in wire compatibility if your devices doesn’t have Bluetooth, which is pretty clever. At $129 MSRP, I could see this getting on many peoples short list.

Bluetooth Speakerphone

The SP200 speaker phone looks to be the little brother to the SP700 I reviewed and loved a while back. This one is less expensive and not quite as good looking but does offer some refinement: namely in the volume control wheel, and dedicated on/off switch. The attached clips hooks easily to a cars visor where in many states hands free phone is the law, or you can use the speaker phone in an office or kitchen for handy conversations without dropping your phone in the pasta sauce (yes, it happens, long, sad story).

The SP 200 looks to be a nice update to their line. MSRP: $59.99 and is due out this month.

Gadgets Go Green: Surge strips and outlets that cut down electricity consumption

In a world where the environment quality and economy are rapidly declining, it is important to know what you, as an individual, can do to help the environment and stay afloat in a recession. Every week, I hope to find some cool Green products to talk about and see whether they are worth the money. Today, I have found a few products from Monster, as well as a special outlet from Kill A Watt.

If a product is turned off, why would I care about a special surge strip?

A common misconception that I would like to address first is something commonly referred to “Vampire Loads.” Essentially, this is a term used to describe electronics that still draw power even if they are turned off. When electronics, such as HDTVs are turned off, they actually enter stand-by mode. During stand-by mode, electricity is still being used, albeit not as much when it’s actually running. However, everything adds up, so with all your equipment, 20% of your bill is due to vampire loads as cited by the U.S. Department of Energy. For example, if you leave your cell phone charger plugged longer than the necessary time, it will still draw power and run up your bill. Don’t worry this happens to be best of us, even I am guilty of this. However, I do try to make a conscious effort to unplug the charger as soon as it finishes charging. A product that can really turn off and stop drawing power are becoming more and more common.

Monster’s HDP 850G, HDP 900G, HDP 1400 and HDP 1850

At CES 2009, Monster had on display these GreenPower PowerCenters, which are special surge strips meant for home theater set ups. These surge strips have the ability to turn off all equipment when not being used, as well as analyzing how much power your HDTV is really using. The more advanced models, such as the HDP 1400 and HDP 1850 contain technology such as Clean Power HD Filtering, which actually makes your picture on the screen look better and more clear. In addition, they are IR compatible meaning they can be powered on/off with any remote control. On the surge strip itself, there are specially marked outlets where you plug in your peripherals for your home theater. Whenever the main device is powered on, such as the HDTV, all the other peripherals are powered on and vice versa.

The HDP 850G costs $99.95, the HDP 900G costs $129.95, the HDP 1400 costs $249.95, and the HDP 1850 costs $349.95.

The Kill A Watt P4400

Moving on, we have another similar yet different device, which is meant to find out which electronic uses the most energy, so you would “Kill that Watt”. Basically, you plug in whatever you want to test out into this device and it will tell you the efficiency by displaying Kilowatt per hour, and how much that would total. By using this product, you will be able to found what is more efficient than something else, which would come in handy when buying electronics. In addition, the retailer claims you can “calculate electrical expenses by the hour, day, week, month, even year. With an accuracy within 0.2%, you can safely know what to expect your expenses to be.” Knowledge is power and I’m sure many people would love to know their bills before they come. Being able to analyze exactly what is running up your bill will help you in the future so can unplug equipment or purchase a special power strip. This product only costs $25.

Is it worth it?

If the U.S. Department of Energy is correct in that 20% of your electric bill is due to stand-by power consumption, then investing some money in one of these would definitely pay off. Not only would you be saving money, which is always nice, but you would be doing your part to help the environment. After all, any electricity being used is harmful to the environment. If you are having a hard time making ends meet, should you invest in something like this? Probably not, getting food on the table comes first. But, if you can afford one of these, then it will definitely pay off in the long run.

With computer hard drives becoming bigger and bigger, it is easy to amass a big music collection, and never have to worry about deleting any music. The problem is that there are so many songs you like, you often forget which are good, and which are bad. If only there was some technology that is more advanced than shuffle in the sense that it plays very related music. Enter Bang & Olufsen’s BeoSound 5 with MOTS technology.

MOTS in a nutshell

Other than a word that sounds like the popular applesauce company (Mott’s); it is actually a special piece of technology that allows the BeoSound 5 to play music that is really similar in several components to the last played song. More of the Same, or MOTS, basically scans every song in your music library and finds similar songs based on sound, dynamics, and rhythmic aspects. Essentially, it does a lot more than just group songs based on genre. In fact, Bang & Olufsen wanted MOTS to be as advanced as it can, so they teamed up with the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence, or OFAI. Their line of work specializes in Artificial Intelligence that isn’t limited to bio-informatics or robotics, so it can be applied to music classification.

Now, to get started you just have to select a song and then MOTS will do the rest in terms of creating a playlist that revolves around that one song. Bang & Olufsen claims that MOTS will help you find long and forgotten music that you once enjoyed. If MOTS works well, it could definitely be the deciding factor in purchasing this product, because I, personally, would love to have a software that could find similar music to what I am playing right now, because I definitely forgot a lot of music that I like. Also, in case you want to compile your own playlist, you can and then after that, MOTS will take over and add more, related songs.

Bang & Olufsen tested their MOTS algorithm first with a computer, and after they were pleased with the results, they moved on to a certified panel of judges to make sure they got exactly what they envisioned from the MOTS technology.

BeoSound 5

Moving on from the MOTS aspect of the digital music player, let’s see what special features it comes with and whether it is worth the hefty price tag it carries. The BeoSound 5 isn’t exactly portable, so Bang & Olufsen could add a nice sized screen, without having to worry too much about portability. The BeoSound 5 boasts a sexy 10.4 inch LCD display, with an intuitive aluminum wheel and a few buttons located on the side of the device.

It also comes with something called the BeoMaster 5, which is essentially a tiny black box that is located near the device, but placed out of sight, which contains all of the necessary hardware components such as hard drive and Internet connections. The BeoMaster 5 contains a 500GB hard drive, which can hold 20,000 songs in lossless WMA format. The BeoMaster 5 has Internet connections as it comes with ethernet cables, however, it is not networkable. The ethernet capable is mainly used to receive Bang & Olufsen updates as well as getting music from Internet radio sites. At this time, Bang & Olufsen do not have a partnership with prominent sites such as Pandora. It can be hooked up via USB port, but this would only be used to transfer songs onto the device.

Pricing

With all nice pieces of technology, the thing that everyone hates reading about is the price tag. The BeoSound 5 is set to be shown off in all of their stores by February 2009, and is also going to be available for purchase around that time. For a 3 year service plan, the MSRP is $5900. This includes the BeoSound 5 and the BeoMaster 5. Now, if you want to purchase a floor stand, table stand, and wall bracket, that will cost you $500, $250, and $100, respectively.

I’m not sure how realistic it is to purchase one of these for your homes just yet. I do imagine, however, something like this becoming popular in doctor’s offices, dentist offices, etc., because those are places where customers have to wait a long time and it would be nice to have this type of a jukebox.

We were able to get some hands-on time with the device, as well as several pictures. Check out the gallery and video below.

The only problem with Klipsch’s plan is that, of the three home audio systems it announced today, only one is south of the $500 mark. It is also interesting to note, that while Klipsch is seeking the the DTV set, they only expect their more modestly priced audio systems, the HD Theater 500 for $599.99 and the HD Theater 300 for $399.99, to be available for sale in March for the former and April for the latter.

Klipsch recommends that consumers spend approximately the same amount of money on their surround sound system as they would on the TV itself. They base this wisdom on experience they have gathered as the leading audio supplier of 50% of new theaters in North and South America. This rule, combined with rapidly falling HTDV prices, may lead to trouble for Klipsch in pushing their HD Theater 1000 which will retail for $899.99. Whether Klipsch will be able to capitalize on the DTV upgrade rush with only its most costly unit available in retailers remains to be seen.

Novelty speakers are a dime a dozen these days, but this pair in particular is pretty amazing. The “Speak-er” is for the most part your average run of the mill speaker, except it looks like a speech bubble.

The bubble measures in at 4 x 6 x 2, so it’s not terribly large, and is made of white ABS with a matte black steel grille on the front. The speakers are expected to be released later this year for $120 for a pair. There currently isn’t any information available about the interior specs of the speakers, but really, when you look like a speech bubble does it really matter?

The speakers actually started off as just a concept design and have gone on to become a reality. What concepts have you seen that you’d like to see put into production?

Do you have a friend that wants a portable speaker and is afraid of clowns? Then don’t buy them this speaker. For all your friends not suffering from coulrophobia, Geek Stuff 4 U has a news portable speaker that looks like a big, colorful ball—the Music Balloon. Why is it named the Music Balloon? Did you even look at the picture?

The speaker plugs into any standard 1/8 inch (3.55 mm) headphone jack. The unit charges via USB, and you should get about two hours of play from a full charge. It comes in five colors—pink, yellow, red, blue, and black—and should entertain visually as well as musically. As of press time, the Geek Stuff 4 U website was down from a DoS attack but should be up soon.

The “Tune In Tune Out” headphones run about $50, which isn’t bad given the face you’re getting a pair of headphones and a pair of speakers for that price. It’s amazing no one has thought of this idea (or put this idea into action) sooner. Having a pair of speakers on your headphones could be great for times when you want to share a track with several friends at once or even for times when you want to take your headphones off for a second, but still be able to listen to your music.

The application allows you to connect to another computer on your network and use that computer’s speakers as your own. The application doesn’t allow you to just take over someone else’s speakers. The host system must accept a request to play audio. The app costs $19.95 and runs on Windows XP and higher.

The home theater in a box market continues to grow. Their low entry price makes them even more attractive in the current economic climate. So it comes at as no surprise that Samsung introduced new Blu-ray HTIB offerings at CES. Each offers 1080p playback with the Blu-ray player, and virtual or real 5.1 audio.

The HT-BD8200 is the first home theater sound bar equipped with a Blu-ray player and wireless subwoofer. At 2.6 inches deep, the BD8200 is designed for wall mounting, but still provides virtual 5.1 surround. Users can stream multimedia from the integrated Blu-ray player, USB port, a Bluetooth enabled media device, or through the included iPod dock. It networks via 802.11 b/g/n or USB dongle to stream Netflix or Pandora and is BD-Live (Profile 2.0) compatible.

The HT-BD7200 is a 2.1 system with virtual 5.1 surround sound. The size of the system and its relatively small power rating (400W) make it ideal for an introductory system or for a smaller room. The speaker is constructed from kelp, as in seaweed, which Samsung says provides greater clarity than traditional paper cones. The BD7200 also connects to a b/g/n network, but with an optional USB dongle.

Finally, the HT-BD1250 is the full 5.1 speaker array, offering Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio at an ear shattering 1000W. Like the BD7200, the speakers are made from kelp. The BD1250 (and BD7200) also features an improved amplifier engine that is supposed to reduce amp and power supply noise. It is fully b/g/n WiFi ready with an integrated transceiver. Pricing is not yet available for any of these systems, and Samsung will only say “the first half of 2009” when it comes to availability.

The company behind the high-end iPod dock - the Zepplin - has introduced their latest contribution to home audio. Like many other soundbars out there, the the Panorama soundbar offers a simple and elegant all-in-one home theater solution. If you’ve check out the Zepplin since it’s launch a year ago, the sound quality is amazing—so I’m sure the Panorama follows it up quite well.

The Panorama has 9 drive units enclosed in an aluminum casing: two bass woofers, two midrange drivers, an aluminum dome tweeter, along with four others that complete the package. Mount the unit below your flat-panel LCD or Plasma, and you’ve got yourself a complete package. Pick one up for $2,200 this spring. More shots of the Panorma below.

Headphones are very important nowadays especially with the emergence of PMPs and MP3 players being so popular. There are many headphone manufacturers out there, and so knowing all the facts and perhaps even testing out headphones before purchasing them is always the safe way to go. Let’s take a closer look at Monster’s newest headphones, the Turbine.

Speakers always sound better than normal headphones because the device is a lot bigger and can provide deep, rich sounds. Monster decided to call the Turbine In-Ear speakers because they believe the quality of their headphones are nearly speaker-like. The Turbine was designed by Noel Lee, head of of Monster. In fact, he spent three years conducting research, playing with prototypes, and perfecting the design for their launch. He wants these to be the headphones that all people wanted.

The Turbine headphones boast 8mm drivers that were created to deliver high quality sound, detail, bass, and clarity normally found in speakers. Again, one of Monster’s main goals was to make these headphones exactly like a good speaker system. Monster also created several eartips in order to ensure good sounds, keep out unwanted noise, and have a comfortable fit.

Noel Lee, Head of Monster, had this to say about the headphones he designed:

“Life is too short to listen to bad headphones. Unfortunately, ordinary headphones simply can’t reproduce the deep bass and rich highs of full-size speaker systems. Monster is on a mission to make headphones sound better, and our new Turbine In-Ear Speakers allow people to hear truly remarkable sound from in-ear headphones. Hearing is believing. After all, the human ear can discern much more than any technical measuring device, and the performance of Monster Turbines needs to be heard to be believed.”

No word on when these are set to retail, but the MSRP is $149.95.

Spracht showed off two new products at CES, the Aura BluNote Bluetooth speaker and the Aura SoHo speakerphone. Both items add new features and benefits to the Aura line.

The BluNote is a portable speaker that connects to any music playing device wirelessly via Bluetooth or a 3.5mm wire. The coolest part might be if your music player is also a phone. The BluNote can be used as a speakerphone for hands free operation. With space for eight different Bluetooth profiles, the BluNote really is a universal speaker. This product is available now for $129 from the Spracht website.

The Aura SoHo is a fully duplex speakerphone/conference phone. The SoHo is designed using echo and noise cancellation technology to create full duplex which allows for natural conversations. It comes in analog, but modules can be added for digital PBX systems, pairing with Bluetooth devices, and wireless connections. Sensitive enough to cover a 400 square foot room, the SoHo is available now at $229.

Touch Digital Photo Frames

One of the electronics Genius will have on display will be the DPF-T805 and the DPF-T1000, both of which are touch digital photo frames. Both of these allow you to upload pictures, music, videos and play them on the photo frame with only a few touches. In addition, both of them have the capacity to play four different pictures at a time, stores up to 700 pictures, and have automatic scheduling so you can conveniently set them to play whenever you want. Lastly, the T805 comes with an 8.4 inch touch screen and 800x600 resolution. Meanwhile, the T1000 comes with a 10.2 inch touchscreen and the same resolution. No word on pricing at this time, but expect it to be pretty expensive with the touch technology and big screen sizes.

Touch Speaker System

One of the touch speaker systems Genius will have on display is the SP-T1200. The speaker system itself comes with a touch panel screen that allows you to control the volume, bass, and treble with ease. The system even lights up when you make sound change. The speakers are said to be small and compact with a 30-watt sound, so it doesn’t compromise size for quality. Now, I’m fine with changing the volume of my speakers by turning the knob, even thought it would probably be much cooler to slide my finger across a screen when I want to make it louder. That being said, the speakers have to be relatively inexpensive, otherwise I would have to pass until it fits my budget.

Infrared Security System

Lastly, we have the IP Cam 350TR, which is an advanced security system using infrared lighting when used in the dark. At night, the IP Cam 350TR automatically senses the lack of light and turns on six infrared LED lights that can pan 135 degrees and tilt 350 degrees - providing the maximum security possible. These would probably work best at home or at a work place to provide good security and let you sleep well at night knowing you are fully protected.

Overall, Genius has some good products in the wings for us and it will be interesting to see what people think at CES.

Section: Audio, Speakers, Gadgets / Other, Lifestyle

This is one of those concepts/ideas/products that would work great in the perfect world and if people used it right, would be really cool. However this is the real world, and despite the undoubted merit in the idea behind this concept, I’m not sure it would work in the “real” world. Nevertheless I may be wrong and we may soon see these adorning streets everywhere: I am willing to be proven wrong. But what is it? This is the Boombench and it is pretty much what it sounds like.

Pretend for a second that you haven’t just looked at the picture, and imaging a modern, sleek minimalistic bench combined with a 80s/90s. Now open your eyes and see the epitome of minimalistic-cum-retro design: the aforementioned Boombench.

The idea is that you will link up to the bench, which will be just on the street, through Bluetooth on your phone and play your music through the substantial speakers. They are twin 60-watt co-axial speakers with two subwoofers built into the seat which makes it vibrate while it’s playing—all of which was demonstrated at the Urban Play event in Amsterdam. I think this is a great idea and concept, allowing people to share music, liven up areas, create a community space, increase musical diversity and awareness and togetherness.

Despite how good this idea is in principle, it won’t work and I think an analogy is needed. I think it will just end up being like a dictatorship: it will work as long as you’re in charge. The problem is people don’t like the same music, so conflicts will arise over what is played. Also, it will be dominated by the younger generation for two reasons: firstly, more of them have phones and also they are more likely to “claim” the bench and not let anyone else use it. This will result in a larger and noisier version of kids on street corners with loud music on phones. I can also imagine many people having complaints about noise pollution, and realistically how long will they be there before someone steals them? Not long.

Unfortunately, I think this is something that will only work in principle, but nonetheless it is a good idea. It can go down along with millions of other things that are designed to improve a society, but will only work if society is already perfect. However, there is still hope for the Boombench as I can see this being made into a viable commercial product.

Section: Audio, Home Audio, Speakers

The crushing economic pressure here in the USA is feeling its weight around the world and is going to impact us all. Tech companies often feel their products are luxuries and could be the first thing consumers avoid, potentially making their big time of year, the holidays, a bust. So what is a tech gadget maker to do?

The traditional choices are lower your prices or get really creative. We, at Gadgetell, are starting to see both. Yesterday, I was contacted about a new promotion from iLuv that is actually one of the most creative efforts I’ve seen since, well, TV voting shows.

Vote for me

Normally, vote-by-texting is reserved for casting your vote for the latest American Idol or some other show. But not now. Now you can enter to win via text. That is right, you can text iLuv for a chance to win this snazzy iPod alarm clock.

The prize is a the iLuv iMM173, a dual iPod dock/alarm combo. While I hold the world is full of iPod docks, this one looks to be a thought out product. Just the 10 levels of brightness for the LCD screen says someone cares whether or not you like a beacon in your room, keeping you up like a fully excited lighthouse. Surround sound, 5W speakers and even remote control round out the highlights.

Wanna win?

How do you enter? Simply text “iLuv” to 95495. The contest will run from October 6 - November 6, 2008.

I believe we’ll see both creative ideas like this to capture eyes as well as significant price drops to pay for all those gadgets that left Asia before the economy showed signs of struggling. There is a lot of product on the water right now that is destined to be marked down and that means real deals for us gadget geeks. Not that price ever stops us, but what you get from family and friends might actually be a bit of good kit.

Altec Lansing has unveiled its latest PC Audio speaker system - the BASS Expressionist 2.2 PC speakers. First thing you’d noticed upon seeing these speakers is its odd coned-shaped form factor. But according to Altec Lansing, that odd-shape was not made without a purpose. Apparently, it was meant to add acoustic value to the audio output of the speaker system. It’s rounded body decreases harsh edge diffractions which will result in an efficient frequency response sans audio distortions for that cleaner and natural sound quality.

But the most important feature of the BASS Expressionist is the built-in subwoofer that comes with each of the speaker units practically eliminates the need for amplifiers to enhance the speakers audio quality. In addition, the speaker system also features an auxiliary input that allows users to connect it to an MP3, CD or DVD easily.

The Altec Lansing Expressionist BASS will be available sometime in October and retail for $129.95.

Philips showcased their new home theatre device recently at IFA 2008. Granted, it kind of looks like a cross between a pet’s feeding dish, a humidifier, and a soccer ball…and one might think “what can this really do?”...but it’s getting some decent feedback.

The CinemaOne is one of the smallest home theatre devices out there. It contains a DVD player, a CD player, an iPod dock, a five channel amplifier, four speakers (featuring the same soundbar technology found in their Ambisound line) and a subwoofer which is built into the base. It can output in just about any kind of format, including DivX and WMV, and you can control the iPod with the included remote. There is also a USB 2.0 port. The DVD player comes with 1080p scaling and Dolby Digital and DTS support as well. Not bad.

No confirmed release dates seem to be out at this point. I’ve seen rumors of September through January. Keep an eye out for updates of confirmation and pricing.

Well the time has come, as much as I hated to have to give these away, they are one review item that I would have loved to keep, but the readers are more important and I am proud to announce the winner.

Drumroll please…and the winner of those Axiom AudioByte computer speakers are none other than lucky reader…Nicholas Wright

Now we just need “Nicholas Wright from Norman, OK” to send me an email at robert (at) gadgetell (dot) com to claim the prize. Please use Axiom winner as the subject line and include a street address where we can ship those to you. Keep in mind, due to the fact they come in two large boxes and they are not all that inexpensive I plan to ship with a signature required. That may be a pain for some, but I just to make sure they arrive safely, and without being left (possibly in the rain) on a door step.

So…what are you waiting for, send that email and I will get them out shortly, I am sad to see them go, but am happy to reclaim the space in my office. And finally, I can only hope you enjoy them even half as much as I did.

Aside from giving us sleek-looking portable data storage devices, LaCie and tech gadget designer Neil Poulton have also given as the FireWire speakers during the early part of the year. The two are following this up with yet another speaker product which we would simply call as the LaCie USB Speakers.

This Poulton-designed USB speakers offers a frequency response rate of 90Hx-20kHz and supports 16-bit/48KHz signal. It derives power from its USB connection and can output a minimum of 1W per channel. The previous FireWire speakers are capable of giving out 4W per channel and supports a signal of up to 24-bit/96kHz. This explains why the new USB Speaker costs only $60, while the FireWire speakers will set you back $100.

In addition, this speaker doesn’t require any driver to make it work, and you can even attach an MP3 player onto it using an optional power adapter. Its cables can be discreetly and conveniently tucked under the speakers for that neat and clean look.

This next product is one of those that is very innovative, but might not be worth your money. Normally I don’t give a price until the end of a post, but I think I’ll just get the price out of the way and say that it costs $21,000.

Okay, if you’re still reading, I realize that you might not know what over twenty thousand dollars will cost you. The Freewheeler is a very cool speaker that is about the size and shape of a small tire, but twice as thick.

It can sync wirelessly with an audio system for a range of about 656 feet, and can operate without a cord. Apparently, its power comes from a rechargeable battery pack that can charge with an included base station.

I wish I had some specs on the quality of the sound, but I can predict what these speakers will be used for. Perhaps rock concerts of the future will charge up these things, and then roll them out to really rock the house. Let’s hope the future will make similar speakers for a cheaper price.

To complement the three new Walkman phones that Sony Ericsson introduced a couple of days ago, Sony Ericsson has also unveiled three new mobile speakers. These are the wireless portable speaker MBS-200, the wireless stereo speaker MBS-400 and the portable speakers MPS-100. Here’s a quick rundown of what each of these speakers are capable of.

First, the MBS-200 which is a wireless portable speaker that can give out up to 50 hours of standby time and 5 hours of talk time. It works on Bluetooth and is compatible with all phones that has the A2DP and AVRCP profile. The MBS-200 will be available in dark grey or white and weigh only 249 grams.

Next we have the wireless stereo speaker bearing the name MBS-400. It’s got more powerful sound than the MBS-200, thanks to its dual speaker system. Other features of this speaker are similar to what the MBS-200.

Finally, we also have the affordable and portable MPS-100 speakers. This speaker takes off from where Sony Ericsson’s best-selling MPS-60 portable speakers has left. It gives out impressive sound for 5 hours and will be available in aluminum silver and black design.

All three are slated for a release date in Q4 2008.

This is by far the most long-term review that I have done to date, and that just goes to show the quality of the speakers. I also have to admit that towards the end of the review I was no longer reviewing these speakers but merely enjoying them and prolonging having to part with them.

As for some of the specs, the Audiobyte speakers are available in a variety of finishes, everything from a simple black, white or charcoal, to high gloss cherry and high gloss burled walnut to the little more unique gloss blue or gloss orange. The speakers measure in at 6.5 x 5.5 x 4-inches and each feature a 3-inch aluminum cone woofer with a 1-inch titanium dome tweeter. The included amp measures in at 5 x 5 x 12 3/8-inches and offers a nice 55 watts per channel. Finally the subwoofer features dual 6.5-inch woofers, with a setting for flat, half boost and boost. The subwoofer, a little on the large side, measures in at 12.4 x 7.875 x 14.5-inches.

As for my thoughts on the speakers, I can say that I was more than pleased with the sound these speakers offered and was actually quite surprised. As someone who is always listening to music while in front of the computer, I was more than happy with a simple $100 set of speakers with a subwoofer, figuring that an expensive set would not make that much of a difference because they would be limited by the computer. I can now say that my 24-inch iMac (and even my cheap Compaq desktop PC) was able to offer a much cleaner sound with these speakers attached. Although the speakers sounded great, the one downfall was that the subwoofer did not seem to offer as much as a thump as I had expected and had been used to as compared to some lower cost computer speakers.

While reviewing these I tried to listen to a variety of sources, everything from audio podcasts, to rock, metal, and even some pop and classical music with a little bit of movie watching and WoW playing as well. As a whole it did not seem to matter what was being played, the sound was great and whether the music was loud or soft it seemed to not matter at all. The only issue that I had was with some of the lesser quality podcasts, but that was not any reflection of the speakers, they just seemed to be able to make some of the production issues a little more obvious.

Bottom Line: If it were not for the price I would be grabbing a set of these for myself. However I do feel the price is justified by the sound quality, I just cannot justify that price tag for my use.

Gear4 has introduced its BlackBox micro, a portable USB-powered speaker system which is touted as the company’s smallest speaker system to date. The Blackbox micro utilizes SFX technology in delivering high quality sound which you wouldn’t expect a speaker of such size would be capable of giving out. Thanks to its two drivers that work together to product optimal audio output, the Blackbox micro is a must-have speaker system for laptops or music players.

The Blackbox micro can connect to any source devices through its 3.5mm audio cable jack and is powered by a USB cable, so users must make sure to connect the speakers on a computer for continuous power supply. The Blackbox micro is compatible with most iPod models.

This small speaker system will be available in the UK sometime in August and will retail for $40. It will ship with a 3.5mm audio cable, some manuals and two Mini USB to USB cables.

By “Eee”, we don’t mean that this new Asus SP-BT23 Bluetooth speaker was made for the Eee PC. Of course it wouldn’t work with the Eee PC, be it the 701 or 901 models, simply because this is a wireless Bluetooth speaker. But if you are one of those tech geeks who managed to install a Bluetooth receiver in their Eee PC or if you are waiting for the Eee PC 1000 which fully supports Bluetooth connectivity, then this speaker would work with those Eee PCs.

So, why are we calling this baby the Eee speaker by the way? Because talking about its design, the SP-BT23 is stylishly designed in white and compact size which makes it, easy to carry, easy to share and has an excellent audio quality. OK, we would have to admit that the last E didn’t come out to well. But hey, this speaker should be capable of giving out excellent sound even while on the go thanks to its 2W power and a frequency response of 150Hz ~ 20KHz. In addition, the SP-BT23 speaker measures only 6.69 x 4.86 x 2.13-inches and weighs just 14.11-ounces. So, that takes care of the portability concerns.

As the SP-BT23 was just launched during Computex, Asus has not released pricing information or release date yet.

Product: Kicker iK500 iPod Speaker System
Price and Availability: Currently available and retailing for $299.99
Rating: 9/10
Pros: Simple, easy to set up and use
Cons: Docked iPod sits a little “off”
Overall: Solid sound with a great overall look

While we were able to review the iK500, which is made for the iPod, Kicker also offers the ZK500 for the Microsoft Zune, which also retails for $299.99.

The iK500, after first getting it out of the box has a nice look to it.

The iK500 ships with a remote control that offers a full range of options along with eight dock inserts that should allow for just about any iPod to sit snugly in place. It has two 5-inch woofers, two 3/4-inch tweeters, one 6-inch square reflex subwoofer that are powered by a 40-watt stereo amplifier. In addition it has a 1/8-inch stereo aux-in jack and stereo RCA out. The speaker system measure in at 8.5 x 19.2 x 8.4-inches and weigh 9.2-pounds, which basically means that the system itself is a little on the larger side, so this may affect where you choose to keep it. The unit we had was moved from room to room, as we needed or wanted it as opposed to having a home spot to call its own.

The controls are about as simple as they come, the dial next to the display offers the ability to adjust the volume, bass, treble and aux-in settings as well as turn the unit off and on. The remote is equally as easy and yet still offers a great deal of control, with the ability to not only to skip songs and adjust the volume but also control the playlists.

Like we first mentioned the iK500 has a really nice look to it, which makes it even nicer once turned on, because it has a sound to match. With a wide range of music selection, everything from grungy live rock to nicely produced audio to home crafted podcasts we had a similar enjoyment while listening. The iK500 worked and sounded well in the kitchen, bedroom, living room and even while forced out in the (2 car) garage to do some spring cleaning.

I was able to test this using a 2nd generation iPod nano, iPhone (even though there is not a dock connector that fits) and even a 1st and 2nd generation Shuffle via the aux-in jack and was equally happy with the sound. The only real con we had was that the iPod sits straight up and down and it was at times hard to read the display, but overall that is a small issue, after all this is a music player and not a video player.

Bottom Line: Kicker has made great products and has been a great brand for a while. After all they have been the envy of my eyes from years back when I was more into having the loudest car in the neighborhood, and after playing around with the iK500 I can say that I am still just as happy with the quality of their product. Having recently also purchased a Zune, we may have to grab the ZK500 for that also.

With the growing popularity of mobile phones as music devices, it is but logical that mobile phone accessory manufactures would think of coming out with speakers that could deliver high-quality sound from mobile phones to external speakers. Logitech is one of these manufacturers with its new speaker system that works with mobile phones. To make it even more interesting, Logitech made its mobile speaker system, called the Pure-Fi, work wirelessly.

The Logitech Pure-Fi Mobile speaker system works with mobile phones that are Bluetooth enabled. Using the Advanced Audio Distribution (A2DP) profile, music stored in the users phone can be streamed directly to the Pure-Fi Mobile speaker system, and it will work up to about 32 feet. The Pure-Fi speakers also promise to give articulate bass and smooth treble sounds with its 2-inch high-excursion drivers and dual 2-inch pressure drivers.

In addition to being a high quality mobile speakers, the Pure-Fi can also be used as a wireless speakerphone, thanks to its two built-in mics which pick up vocal nuances and monitor and block unwanted background noise. Users can also call-answer and call-end easily with the use of controls located on the top of the speakers.

The Logitech Pure-Fi speaker system comes with a protective case which also fits charging cables. For music on PCs, iPod and other MP3 player, Pure-Fi can either be paired to an audio source via Bluetooth or through a built-in 3.5mm audio jack.

And now for the pricing, the Logitech Pure-Fi Mobile speaker system retails for $149.99 and will hit US and European stores sometime in June.

Britain’s lollypop ladies, the equivalent of our school crossing guards here in the US, have just been issued cameras and portable DVRs to record incidents of “lollipop rage” or school zone road rage. The cameras record traffic from both sides and feed their footage to an Archos portable DVR. The system was developed by a British firm known as Routesafe, and several local authorities have already implemented it in their communities.

“It’s unbelievable that we have to take this action,” says the chairman of the Local Government Association’s transport board, “but the lives of children are at risk from increasing numbers of drivers who are so selfish that they are willing to put lives at risk by refusing to stop for 30 seconds at a school crossing.”

Road rage is becoming an increasing problem in the UK. Anyone caught by this new system will be fined £1,000, which equals roughly $2000 US, and also have 3 points placed on their driver’s license.

While we are taking some time getting our full thoughts down, we wanted to show off the pics of the latest gadget to make its way into the Gadgetell headquarters. Its the Kicker iK500 iPod speaker system. While we have the iK500 which is made exclusively for the iPod, Kicker also has the zKick ZK500 for the Microsoft Zune.

Aside from the obvious difference that one is made for the Zune and the other for the iPod, they both offer the same features. The systems both ship with a remote control that offers a full range of options, and have two 5-inch woofers, two 3/4-inch tweeters, one 6-inch square reflex subwoofer that are powered by a 40-watt stereo amplifier. In addition they both have a 1/8-inch stereo aux-in jack and stereo RCA out. They both measure in at 8.5 x 19.2 x 8.4-inches and weigh 9.2-pounds.

The iK500 includes eight dock inserts that will allow for just about any iPod to fit snugly in place, and the ZK500 comes with three inserts to fit the various available Zune players. The iK500 and ZK500 both retail for $299.99 and are currently available. During our (so far brief) testing the system sounded great and worked well with a variety of iPods, to include the nano, Shuffle and even the iPhone, while in airplane mode. Be sure to check back for our full review and in the mean time enjoy the pics…

Only days after the announcement of the NFC-enabled Nokia 6212 Classic, there is already an NFC-compatible accessory that goes with it. The Parrot PARTY Black Edition, according to its makers, is the first in the world to commercialize Near Field Communications Technology or NFC. What this means is that not only is it small and portable, but it will be very easy to pair up with compatible devices and pump up the volume. It’s not just easy, it’s ridiculously easy. Think knocking the two devices against each other and you get the picture. Other than being NFC-enabled, this baby also comes with a built-in Class-D amplifier, two drivers that collectively pump out 6 watts of power, Stereo Widening, and a so-called Virtual SuperBass technology. It’s portable and will have a rechargeable battery, so you can take it anywhere you go with your NFC-enabled device. The cost? A mere UK£ 79.00 or about $160 US. Pirate crew not included.

Section: Audio, Speakers

Genius has just released their new 3D surround sound quality headphones, the GHP-05 Live. The GHP-05 Live features enhanced true bass levels that contribute to producing that 3D surround sound quality. The GHP-05 headphones also offer a wide acoustic range which should offer good quality with a variety of audio from classical to vocal music.

Genius has built the GHP-05 Live’s true 3D sound quality using precise echo phase control that creates clear and natural sound. This is the same technology that enables engineers to power amplifiers and speakers to make the sound moves around in a super low-bass, upper high-treble and pure vocals. Giving credit to the headphone’s soft velvet padded ear they should offer comfort for extended wear.

With a price tag of $59, the GHP-05 Live headphones come with an extension cable, a 3.5mm-RCA converter and a 6.3mm gold plated adapter that can be connected to any audio devices. The GHP-05 Live looks cool and sporty although some may get turned off by its bulky design, especially now that there are smaller and slimmer headphones available in the market today. But for loyal users of Genius products, the GHP-05 Live would be a good addition to other their other Genius speakers.

The point of anything that doesn’t work as advertised always evades me, and the case of this USB mouse speaker is no exception. Worth $14 and an ounce of your patience, Brando’s USB mouse speaker will play music from any iPod, PC, laptop, CD player, mobile phone or any other compatible sound source via a standard 3.5mm plug. It has a handy switch for turning it On/Off, as well as for adjusting the volume. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery powers it, and a complimentary neck strap is even included in the box for added “convenience” and “portability”. It’s got the basic features of your average portable speaker covered so far, but one thing it doesn’t do it act as a real computer mouse. I guess the exterior was done all in the name of style, then. If you can call its violet “headlights” stylish.

Meet the Micropod SE from Scandyna, a Danish speaker company (the country, not the pastry). Scandyna has been at making speakers for 40 years and does so with a certain flair. These kind of makes me want to crawl inside one of these and make some honey.

The full feature list is copied below but highlights include: a Kevlar bass/midrange unit, a soft dome tweeter and an
extra durable finish. Hot. At $199 a pair, performance and style don’t come cheap.

The maker has some much larger versions that look quite Dr. Seuss-ish, which in my book, is what every designer should aspire too.
