Section: Computers, Desktops

ViewSonic has recently introduced the VPC101, and it appears to be a nicely priced all-in-one desktop style PC. Of course, that nicely priced statement will most likely depend on your needs, but I am thinking extra house computer—something that will be able to stream some Pandora, play photo slideshows and maybe do some light surfing.

With that, the VPC101 is similar in specs to a netbook. And I say that because it has an all-to-familiar set of specs which include a 1.6GHz Intel Atom 230 processor, integrated GMA 950 graphics, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. And being an all-in-one PC it also has an 18.5-inch display that offers a 1366 x 768 resolution. Additionally, this particular model is running Windows 7 Home Premium and that means it comes with the touchscreen features.

Price wise, the list is $650 and it is expected to be available sometime next month.

Dell finally brings out Mac Mini competitor

Section: Computers, Desktops, Hardware

With the release of Windows 7 and programs such as Boxee, having a computer as part of a home-theater set-up is becoming more and more reasonable. The issue has been that outside of nettops and the Mac mini, there haven’t been many options for what that computer should be. Sure, anything would work, but it’s always much preferred if the device looks nice up there next to an HDTV. Finally Dell has come through with a computer that can fit that need.

The new computer is called the Dell Zino HD. The Zino HD actually looks a bit like a Mac mini, if only a bit bigger, measuring 8 inches on each side, all black aside from the top which comes in Dell’s typical myriad colors. It can come with a variety of AMD Athlon processors (both Dual Core and single core), up to 8 GB of RAM, up to 1 TB of storage, and either a DVD or Blu-ray drive. It runs on Windows Vista, 7 or Ubuntu for those who want the options, and can output to an HDTV via the HDMI port (something the Mac mini is sorely lacking). The Zino HD starts at $229, much lower than the Mac mini’s $599, and tops out at $808, also cheaper than the top Mac mini with an HDD that’s half the size with no HDMI.

The Zino HD looks like it could be the computer of choice for any home theater setup for easy access to all those videos on your computer. Pair it with Boxee, Hulu, Netflix and iTunes, and you have almost everything you could want viewable on your HDTV. Sure, there is the upcoming Boxee box, but that doesn’t mean having an actual PC hooked up to your TV isn’t a good idea. There are other uses, of course, like a cheap, easily portable PC for say a college student who doesn’t do a whole lot of PC gaming. Or, it could be useful for using the Internet on your TV without having to use the clunky Wii or PS3 interfaces.

This week stands out for me and my mobile phone addiction. Big announcements in the tech world get us all excited until we stop to ask some questions. Then we get kind of pissed off and start turning on the hype. Behold the gems I turned up this week:

Sears says deals won’t wait for Black Friday

Microsoft has trust issues

Barnes and Noble doesn’t want to start fist fights

HTC brags about being smart

Sears says screw the calendar

Just the mention of Black Friday and shoppers pupils dilate just a bit, showing their arousal. Sears has decided the calendar is for suckers and has started their sale this weekend. Why not? Our Sue Walsh explains:

Sears has announced it will be kicking off the holiday shopping season this weekend by offering special Black Friday deals. It plans to offer those special “Black Friday Now” deals every Saturday from 7am until Christmas.

The Saturday after Christmas Sears shoppers will be welcomed by 1,000s of Abe Lincoln impersonators as the store kicks off “President’s Day Now” sale. Feel free to move holidays around at home kids, it is the new marketing paradigm. Somewhere, Sears marketing team is giggling at duping the American public.

Microsoft says manufacturers can’t be trusted

Our Heather Wood posted about Microsoft’s Signature PCs: “When you usually buy a PC, you have to spend time removing all of the pre-installed applications on the computer. These can include 30 day music trials, limited anti-virus protection software and photo editing tools you probably will never use. On these signature PCs, no crapware or trials will be included. “

Instead, Microsoft Signature PCs that they are selling direct to consumers will have only the basics installed. The take-away from this is Microsoft is attempting to control the experience consumers have with their products. Clearly, MS feels the crapware festival that greets most new owners is less than stellar.

It is a good move for MS but you’ve got to wonder, if companies pay to get crapware there in the first place, will prices go up? Could this start a price war between MS and manufacturers at other retailers? This could mean the net result of MS adventures in retailing will be to lower prices in an ever-dropping market. Sweet.

Barnes and Nobles averts reader wars

What is likely to happen when folks who love hard covers and the smell of a new book mix with internet-loving einkers? Book fight! Imagine volume upon volume being flung about as screams of “tree killer” and “experience killer” get flung just as hard. It is a nightmarish scene typically reserved for winning an NBA championship.

Our Robert Nelson commented on the plan: “Personally, it seems only logical that Barnes & Noble would have at least some Nooks in stock and ready for those that want instant gratification. But that is not the case, instead it looks like only select locations will have them available to purchase and take home.”

Only a crackhead could come up with a crazy retail plan, right? Do they really fear book fights? Are they worried the Nook would convert masses away from physical books and drive them to their online bookstore? Sounds like some paranoid addict is afraid of losing retail locations over this. That’s embarrassing.

HTC brags

It’s been my experience that folks that are actually smart don’t need to say it, much less make it their new advertising campaign. So it goes with HTC’s new “quietly brilliant” as our Robert Nelson explains:

HTC has just recently begun a new ad campaign which deems them as “Quietly Brilliant” and is simply going by the name of “You.” While some may say that the quietly brilliant part is a bit self centered, the You campaign in general appears to be offering a welcomed push at showing consumers just how nice it can be to have a smartphone.

I am quietly brilliant too. Something along the lines of “keep your mouth shut and let everyone assume your’re an idiot vs. opening your mouth and proving it,” springs to mind. Wait, wasn’t this the plot to “Good Will Hunting”? Will HTC singlehandedly relaunch the career of Ben Affleck, (who was the bomb in Phantoms)? Doubt it.

Robert focuses on the “You” side of the campaign and the “you don’t need to get a phone, you need a phone that gets you” but that troubles me. I don’t get me. How can I expect some engineers in Taiwan to get me? Should I be flattered if they do? Can I get a phone number if they do to talk about being penpals?

Either way, I find the concept disturbing. How about you? Do you think they get you?

Microsoft’s retail and online stores will be selling a line of signature PCs. When you usually buy a PC, you have to spend time removing all of the pre-installed applications on the computer. These can include 30 day music trials, limited anti-virus protection software and photo editing tools you probably will never use. On these signature PCs, no crapware or trials will be included.

With the Microsoft Signature PCs, you will only receive Microsoft brand software. The PCs will include the Microsoft Live mail client, Zune, Silverlight, 3D maps and MS Security Essentials. Internet Explorer will be the default browser and Bing will be the default search engine. Adobe Flash and Acrobat Reader will be included in the Signature PC package as well. It goes without saying that the Windows 7 will be the operating system on these computers.

Microsoft will also be allowing staff members at their retail locations assist users in installing the programs that they want on their computer.

Section: Computers, Desktops, Hardware

With the release of Windows 7 looming, HP is certainly bringing out everything it has both for the new OS update and holiday shopping. First, there was the new Envy laptops, and now HP is bringing out new TouchSmarts. However, these new machines take advantage of much more than just the Windows 7 release.

For those unaware, HP’s TouchSmart line is its collection of multitouch enabled desktops. With the new multitouch-friendly Windows 7, new TouchSmarts were imminent. HP promises the new computers will take full advantage of those capabilities, in addition to its slew of new partnerships. For those who used the TouchSmart line before, the software in HPs TouchSmart experience was a bit lacking, it had media control, but only for the media stored on the computer, or local network.

The new HP TouchSmart 300 and 600 computers will ship with software from HP’s newest partners: Pandora, Rhapsody, WildTangent, Hulu and Netflix. Pandora will provide the music streaming that has grown so popular. Rhapsody will provide its music library to the TouchSmart experience (subscription will still be required). WildTangent will provide games for users. The big announcement here, though is both Hulu and Netflix. Hulu Desktop will ship on HP TouchSmarts (and HP is saying it’s the only place you’ll find it packaged in). Netflix will be available through Netflix on HP, which will provide the streaming, though no mention of whether it will allow for HD or not.

As for the specs of the new machines, there’s the TouchSmart 300 which comes with and AMD Athlon II Processor (clocked at different speeds for the two models), and a 20-inch HD display. The TouchSmart 600 ships with Intel Core 2 Duo Processors (again, different versions and speeds for the two models), with a 23-inch HD display. Both come equipped with Blu-ray burners that can read and burn all three major optical media discs. The computers even come with TV tuners built in and the option to connect video game consoles, so it can act as an HDTV as well as a PC.

HP TouchSmarts have always been a bit drool-worthy and these new updates makes them even more so. There are some problems with constantly using touch on a desktop PC, but for minimal use, it should be fine. Even so, the TouchSmart 300 and 600 look to be great options to get the most out of Windows 7 in a desktop.

Today began the Intel Developer Forum, a chance for Intel and a number of other companies to debut their newest computer technology. It’s the perfect opportunity to see what’s coming up next in terms of computer hardware and will likely see a lot of new Windows 7 machines throughout the conference. Today, as the opening day, saw a lot of announcements during the keynote presentation.

The biggest announcement for Intel looks to be the new Intel Xeon 5500 series of processors. Intel is saying these new chips will power everything from the Internet to research oriented supercomputers. They look to be quite fast and smart enough to clock the multiple cores to handle the task at hand through the new Intel Turbo Boost Technology. Intel is saying the chip series is the most important processor innovation since the Intel Pentium Pro which was released nearly 15 years ago.

For processors, Intel also brought on stage a wafer of its 22nm chips that are due for release in 2011. The technology is said to push Moore’s Law further than some have thought possible with the scaling wall nowhere in sight. The new technology would allow for 2.9 billion transistors in the area of a fingernail and will make for even faster, more efficient computers.

In terms of more pressing consumer matters, Intel has announced the new Intel Atom Developer Program. The program is meant to draw developers into making apps for netbooks and later MIDs and smartphones that use Intel Atom processors. The idea is that the program will create more applications that are designed to fit on netbook-sized screens, and will be cross-platform using platforms like Silverlight and Flash. Some companies like Acer are planning on putting app stores for such apps onto future netbooks. It’s not clear why that is needed, however, as the idea of netbooks always seemed more like a portable web browser and maybe word processor, apps seem like they could be redundant or rarely used.

AMD introduces $99 quad-core CPU

Section: Computers, Desktops, Hardware

<img src="http://www.dabbledoo.com/ee/images/uploads/gadgetell/amd_logo_250x250.jpg" title="" alt="AMD introduces $99 quad-core CPU" width="250" height="250" / align="right" >

With Windows 7 quickly approaching next month, now is the best time for new product announcements to coincide with the OS release. Usually that would mean new desktops, laptops, and this time around, netbooks. AMD is taking a different angle, however, and is going after those who build their own PCs. What better way to do that than to put out a new CPU that’s cheaper than anything Intel is currently offering.

The new CPU, the AMD Athlon II X4, is the first quad-core chip to be introduced at a price of $99. The chip is $50 less than the Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200, which should make it at least a bit more viable. The Athlon II X4 may not be the fastest CPU available, AMD’s previous Phenom II X3 (with 3 cores) will more often be the faster chip, though it does cost $20 more.

It’s interesting that AMD would go after the desktop PC crowd with it’s new chip. Laptops and netbooks seem to be the main segments of the PC market as of late. Though it is true that desktops tend to be cheaper than laptops, and even cheaper when you build them yourself. This market might be a good place to start to gain back some market, or even mind share in the industry. Sure, when building an ultimate gaming machine the AMD Athlon II X4 simply doesn’t stack up to the Core i7, but for those looking to build cheaper desktops to run Windows 7, it’s certainly a good choice. Even if it doesn’t turn out too well for AMD, or you really want Intel chips, it might convince Intel to put out a cheaper quad-core chip, or just go the current Apple route and keep the current models when they debut the next generation, but knock the price down to compete better.

Along with the settlement, Dell is required to disclose detailed information about the level of service their customers will receive and the percentage of customers that qualify for low cost financing.

“Today’s announcement is the final step in ensuring New Yorkers harmed by Dell’s deceptive and illegal business practices are fully compensated,” said Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo said in a statement announcing the settlement.

If you are a New York resident you can go online to the AG’s website and file an application for restitution.

HP’s MediaSmart Server can constantly convert your videos so you can access them in more web-friendly formats. The dual core processor can handle transcoding faster than a single core processor. The video conversion tools are also tweaked giving the user the ability to choose file formats, video and audio bit rates, resolutions, and more.

These machines are also more Mac-friendly since Macs can now access the administration panel. Linux machines are still out of luck when it comes to admin, but any computer with a web browser can access files on the server. You will still need a Windows machine for the initial set up.

The MediaSmart Server line will also see a software store pop up soon that will give access to software for your server and software for client machines.

Dell’s new desktops

To start, the new desktop is the Dell Studio XPS 8000, and even with the standard feature set it is fairly impressive for a gaming, home theater or image/video editing PC. The Dell Studio XPS 8000 starts at $799 with an Intel Core i7, 4 GB of RAM, integrated 7.1 surround sound, and an ATI Radeon HD 4350 512MB, which isn’t bad at all. Upgrades include the aforementioned Core i7, up to a monstrous 16 GB of RAM, and Blu-ray read-only or burnable drive. Looks to be a good deal no matter what the specs.

New Inspirons, too

The two new “ultra-slim” laptops come in the form of the Inspiron 14z and 15z. Both are using Intel’s Utra-Low Voltage (ULV) to provide lots of battery life, to the tune of 4 or 8 hours from 4 and 8 cell batteries, respectively. They each feature Intel Core 2 Solo, Core 2, or Core 2 Duo processors, and, unlike the Inspiron 11z, both the 14z and 15z have a DVD-drive. Aside from the ULV technology and the reduced size (each stand at less than 1 inch thick when closed), they are pretty much the same as the Inspiron 14 and 15, though the added battery life may be worth the extra money.

Hold your horses?

The new computers are definitely nice machines, but it might be worth it to hold off on buying them for at least a month and a half. At this point, with Windows 7 looming at the end of next month, buying a PC right now is probably not worth the hassle of installing the new OS. Unless you really need a new computer of laptop right now, just hold off on these until they have 7 instead of Vista pre-installed. Or, of course, there’s always a Snow Leopard installed Mac.

Video cards are often internal hardware used to extend monitor functions. Tritton introduced two new VGA cards that are external and designed to extent multiple monitor support. The “highly-efficient” VGA video cards See2 UV150 and See2 Xtreme are already on sale at Best Buy starting today.

For $49.99, the See2 UV150 is an affordable way to use another VGA monitor for your PC setup. Forget about installing internal video/graphic cards to support multiple monitor support, with the external See2 UV150 installation should be really simple and easy. Plenty of people think that the more monitors, the better and Tritton hopes to help with the USB compatible See2 UV150. On their website, here are some uses for multiple monitor support depending on what you need:

Office Use:

    * View large spreadsheets across two screens with display continuity
    * Multitask more effectively without overlapping windows
    * Open attachments on one screen while reading the e-mail on the other

Mobile Use:

    * View multiple screen displays and presentations without bringing another computer

Graphic Use:

    * Use second display for pallets/tools

Data Entry Use:

    * Type documents on one screen while viewing reference material on the other

Wall Street:

    * Use a notebook for viewing multiple screens
    * View charts and live data at the same time

Entertainment:

    * View videos/TV on one screen

In case you want to hook up even more monitor support, perhaps the See2 Xtreme USB VGA card is right up your alley. Whether you are running a Mac or PC, the See2 Xtreme has the ability to sync 6 different VGA displays using the external video card. In addition, it has support for extended desktop, mirroring, and primary mode. Users have the ability to switch between any of those modes at ease. For $79.99, it is a bit more expensive than the UV150, but definitely worth it if you work in a big office where you need many monitors hooked up to one system.

The full press release is below:

In order to get that price you need to purchase either an XPS notebook or XPS desktop. The systems you can choose from include the Studio XPS 13 and XPS 16 notebooks as well as the Studio XPS desktop and are priced from $1,037, $1,094 and $854 respectively.

All things considered, this would not convince me to run out and purchase a computer that I was not shopping for. However if I was in the market already, this would certainly be enough to convince me to purchase (or at least consider) a Dell. This offer is available for a limited time and will expire on August 13, 2009.

Gadgetell Review: Pogoplug

Iyaz Akhtar

Section: Computers, Desktops, Gadgets / Other, Reviews

What is it?

The Pogoplug is an easy way to get your files from a USB hard drive on the Internet in under five minutes. More technically, the Pogoplug is an easy to set up home server that uses a web interface to access your files available for $99.00.

The good

The device is incredibly simple in design and setup is a breeze. The Pogoplug people even included an extension cable to power the device if you don’t want a wall wart on your surge protector. All needed items are included in the box (except a hard drive).

There is no user manual. Instead, follow the three step instructions that are printed in the box. Setup is done via web browser. Plug the Pogoplug into your network and it will be automatically detected as you run through the setup. If it is not automatically detected, you can attempt to find the device using a long keycode.

Hooking in a hard drive (or multiple hard drives via a USB hub) lets you have access to the drive’s contents. Downloading an optional piece of free software from Pogoplug.com lets you use the hard drive attached to the Pogoplug as a local hard drive.

Listening to audio or watching video is possible via the web interface thanks to a built-in flash player. Files are also downladable and shareable. If you want, you can set up a folder to have an RSS feed. You share that RSS feed and people can get notified of your latest pictures or files uploaded to that folder.

An iPhone app also gives access to shared files. The app also allows for mobile uploads to your Pogoplug enabled hard drive.

The bad

The built-in flash player does not support every video format. Xvid files did not play as the player supports only FLV and H.264 MPEG-4 files. However, if you know what an Xvid file is, you can probably get around this. Additionally, the RSS feeds are not iTunes friendly, so you can’t use the Pogoplug as a quick and dirty server for a podcast just yet. More functionality is coming to the RSS feed feature in the future.

The crux

If you want a drop-dead easy way to access your files on the Internet, the Pogoplug is hard to beat. The web interface is powerful, yet simple. The Pogoplug is easily worth the $99 price tag.

HP originally promised to phase out these compounds back in 2007, with full compliance due by 2009. HP has since delayed those efforts, expecting full compliance by 2011. Not happy with their commitment, Greenpeace has decided to respond to HP by climbing onto the roof of HP’s global headquarters and writing “Hazardous Products” in bold letters made of non-toxic children’s finger paint. HP employees can also see Greanpeace’s displeasure through the automated phone calls from William Shatner today asking them to phase out dangerous chemicals.

Greenpeace is asking HP to be more like Apple, which has virtually eliminated BFRs and PVC from all of its computers. Even other top manufacturers like Dell, Lenovo, and Acer has reduced the amount of dangerous chemicals in their computers, some of them even as green as Apple’s. There’s really no excuse for HP to not follow through with its promises if all those other companies are doing so. As HP should know with its recycling program, e-waste is very dangerous and accumulates tons of old computers yearly. It would be nice to see the manufacturing giant, whose products most likely amount to a large percentage of e-waste take steps to help out through more means than just recycling programs.

Section: Computers, Desktops

Averatec just introduced a 22-inch all in one computer, the D1005, for only $799. All in one computers are generally good for small spaces like a home office or a college dorm room. The design is appealing with a look that follows the iMac model with large “chin.” The profile is not as hot, but how often do you stare at the side of your computer?

The specs are decent with an 2.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 3GB DDR2 RAM, a 320GB SATA hard drive, and 802.11n for Wi-Fi. If you’re a wired network aficionado, there is a gigabit networking card in the Averatec D1005 While the 22-inch monitor can show full 1080p video, there is no built-in Blu-ray drive.

Even though the combination of specs and price make this look somewhat enticing, the fact that it ships with Windows Vista Home Premium may not help sales. I imagine a lot of us are waiting for Windows 7 before investing in a new PC.

Section: Computers, Desktops

Today, HP announced several new desktops at affordable prices. The new computers include the HP Pavilion Slimline s5000 series, HP Pavilion p6000 series, the HP Pavilion Elite e9000 series, and the Compaq Presario CQ5000.

Moving on, we have the Pavilion Elite e9000 series, which is more advanced than the two previous computer lines. First off, it operates on a 64 bit version of Windows Vista Home Premium. It runs on an AMD Phenom II X2 545 Dual core processor, sports 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB hard drive, 15-in-1 memory card reader, and has a dedicated 512MB NVIDIA GeForce G210 graphics card.

Monitors that don’t consume a whole lot of energy are starting to become more and more popular as the public becomes more energy conscientious. Today, the Japanese Acer released some information on two new monitors they started shipping today. The two new monitors include the Acer V193WBbmd and Acer V223WBbmd, both of which reduce power consumption by 36%.

In terms of specs, both monitors feature 10,000:1 contrast ratio, a 5ms response time, and a brightness level of 300cd/m2 brightness. What separates the two devices apart is the size. The Acer V193WBbmd measures in at 19 inches with a resolution of 1440 x 900. The other monitor, the Acer V223WBbmd, measures in at 22 inches with a resolution of 1680 x 1050. For quick reference, take a look at the model number and then you will be able to figure out the sizes of the monitor.

The 19 inch Acer V223WBbmd will be on sale for $185, while the other monitor sells for $236. Of course, even if the price doesn’t meet your budget, remember that with all the power it could save for you, it may be worth it in the long run. Both these monitors are currently shipping, but expect them to ship in Japan first, before anywhere else.

Section: Audio, Video, Computers, Desktops, Software / Applications, Web, Downloads, Features, Originals

One important piece of software essential to any computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) is a video player. There are many good, free, available programs out there, yet many users shy away from some that they haven’t heard of before. Within this post, I’m going to take a look at five different programs and some key features about each.

Windows Media Player

Developed by Microsoft, Windows Media Player is available on all PCs, pocket PCs, Windows Mobile cell phones, and it was even developed for Mac, but that development has since ended. Windows Media Player has been released in many versions ranging from 6.1 - 11. The player has a lot of strong features, but many of which require plug-ins. For users running Windows Vista or XP, I’d suggest using Windows Media Player as at least a starter. If any other program below looks appealing, then go with that.

VLC

The next media player is the open source VLC Media Player, which is available on all platforms and boasts 100 million downloads of its version 0.8.6. It can handle pretty much any media format you throw at it, and comes many encoding and decoding databases for Windows, which reduces the amount of required plug-ins. For more experienced users with many different file formats, you can’t really go wrong with VLC, as it handles nearly everything.

Miro

Miro is another video software that manages a lot of online videos and incorporates other video software. First off, it is available on all three major platforms - Windows, Mac, and Linux. It uses a RSS Aggregator to collect the latest videos you want, features a BitTorrent client built-in, as well as a media player. For Windows, the media player is VLC. For Mac OS X, it is QuickTime. And if you are running Linux, then it comes with either Xine Media Player or GStreamer. One of the main features of Miro is its use of BitTorrent, which is definitely a plus if you Torrent a lot.

ALShow

The next media player is Windows only. It’s very popular yet but it does have some nifty features. On the homepage, it lists a few features such as:

# Loads Faster & Plays Smoother
# Play FLV Files - Get the codec in the ALShow Codec Center!
# Codecs Included - Never search for codecs again
# Video / Screen / Audio Capture - Save parts as video, pictures, or audio
# Loop Video Segments - Want to watch that again a few times?
# Instantly Hide ALShow - Press the ESC key
# Caption & Subtitle Support

Based on the system requirements, ALShow does not take up a lot of system resources, which is important in a video player. One key advantage to ALShow is that all of the codecs are built-in. After you download ALShow, you would never have to download any additional codecs.

GomPlayer

The last media player I have for today is GomPlayer, a media player designed for Windows, which is especially popular in South Korea. Some core features of the player is that it can play many different types of files without codecs, and can play broken files. The player was developed in South Korea for Gom-TV. If you live in South Korea, you have probably already heard of this player and possibly use it, as it is more popular than Windows Media Player in South Korea. Otherwise, it’s not very popular here in the United States.

Well there you have it. Each media player listed above has its own specialties and unique aspects. However, each player is still a quality, free program that will hopefully be continued in the future.

As soon as the Windows 7 RC 1 was made available just about a week ago, many people took this opportunity to jump on it and see how it compared to Microsoft’s last OS, Vista. If you have been following tech in recent months, then you probably have noticed Microsoft taking a very active anti-Mac campaign, in efforts to deter potential customers from purchasing a more expensive Mac setup.

At the TechEd conference, Microsoft delivered a statement indicating Windows 7 would be ready to roll by the holiday season. Up until now, it was scheduled to be released in 2010, yet other companies, such as Acer, have hinted at an October release, as they were planning to have their new systems run Windows 7. There are a few times in the year when computers and laptops are bought rapidly. One being the back-to-school craze, and the other being the holiday season rush. Since Windows 7 will be running on machines by the holidays, it will be much to late for the back-to-school computer shopping. However, Microsoft should expect many PCs sold running Windows 7 as long as it is available between Black Friday and Christmas.

Now, there could be a couple of reasons why Microsoft has decided to get Windows 7 out and running as soon as possible. Obviously, Vista has been nothing what Microsoft wanted it to be, and so businesses and households are hesitant to use Vista. As a result, people have stuck with XP, or even switched completely to Mac. If Windows 7 can help save Microsoft’s authority in terms of OS, then they will want to have it rolling sooner rather than later.

Section: Computers, Desktops, Software / Applications, Web, Websites, Features, Originals

Even though I’d like to think of myself as an open-minded individual, I have never really experimented with Linux. At school, I take a computer class, and one of our recent projects was installing Xubutu (a form of Linux) on a Windows XP Professional edition computer. For those of you on the fence about installing Linux on your computer, hopefully my experience can make that decision a little easier. You can use my experience as a guide to installing Linux so you can dual boot the OS with Windows.

The Computer Specs

First off, it is important to note what type of a computer I installed Xubuntu on, and one problem that had arisen from it. It has a 20GB hard drive, and I’m not sure on how much RAM it has, but it’s either 256MB or 512MB. The computer is an old one, so our class is allowed to tinker with the older systems. Due to the low specs, installing Xubuntu was pretty much the only option. It is specifically meant for low performing computers as it has a much more efficient desktop environment.

The Installation Process

The purpose of the project was not just to install Xubuntu, but also to keep Windows XP on the hard drive. To do this, the hard drive must be partitioned. In case you are not familiar with hard drive partitioning, it is basically splitting up the hard drive into two separate sections, which is great for running multiple OSes on one hard drive.

Partitioning the Hard Drive

There are numerous amounts of software that can partition a hard drive, but I used PartedMagic 3.0. However, PartedMagic 3.0 did not work because the system did not meet the minimum requirements. Unfortunately, I did not realize that at the time, so after PartedMagic 3.0 didn’t work, I had to search on some support forums and diagnose the problem. It was a stupid, amateur error on my part.

To resolve this, I opted in using a lower version of PartedMagic, PartedMagic 2.0 - which worked like a charm. As I previously mentioned, the hard drive was only 20GB, so I partitioned it to 10GB and 10GB. One of them would solely be for Windows XP, while the other would be for Xubuntu. After this process was complete, I quickly checked the hard drive space on Windows XP to make sure it was, indeed, 10GB. At this time, I also prepared an install CD of Xubuntu.

Installing Xubuntu

Shortly after, the install CD of Xubuntu was created and I was ready to install the OS with the Penguin logo. After I popped in the CD upon booting the computer, I had to select which hard drive to install the OS on. After selecting some install options (such as username, password, and all that fun stuff), I had finally successfully installed Linux on my computer. The computer restarted and I chose boot to Xubuntu and was met with the Xubuntu loading bar.

Post Installation Thoughts

While the installation of Linux at the time seemed pretty easy, it was actually pretty tough. As I write this article, I realize that my instructor had to help me time-to-time on what to do next. Also, a few of my classmates had accidentally deleted the Windows XP install, because when they tried to boot to Windows, they were met with the blue screen of death. In other words, I would not recommend someone setting up a dual boot Linux/Windows machine if they are not good with computers. At the very least, know thy enemy. Google and Wikipedia are your friends. Don’t be afraid to search for Linux installation tips because that will help make your installation much easier.

I haven’t had a whole lot of experience working with Xubuntu yet, so I can’t really say whether it is much better than XP. However, it does come with word processing programs, GIMP (a free alternative to PhotoShop), some simple, yet fun games, and Instant Messaging programs. Since Linux is completely open-source, there are a whole lot of applications available for download, absolutely free.

If you are still not sure whether you want to install Linux on your system, be sure to check our Shawn Ingram’s Top 5 Linux Myths, to clear up anything you have heard about Linux that may be false.

Even though Microsoft outlined an 18 month plan to cut jobs, Parakh predicts the job cuts would be occur sooner, rather than later. In addition, he predicts that Microsoft will be performing even worse than what most major analysts are saying right now. The Wall Street consensus is that Microsoft will be earning around $14.1 million, however due to lack of good sales and profit, Microsoft will most likely not even reach a global revenue of that figure. If this is all true, then it is likely that Microsoft will make more job cuts in efforts to shrink the payroll and increase efficiency.

At this time, Microsoft has not made a comment on this matter, so it will be interesting to see what will happen in the near future.

Now, don’t think they will be continuing to upgrade XP, only security updates will be maintained. The future of Microsoft lies with Windows 7 and Vista, not with the 8 year old XP. Of course, it will still cost you to downgrade to XP from Vista, as Microsoft wants people to give Vista a chance. However, if HP gets the green light to keep installing XP on their computers, I wouldn’t be surprised if other companies were allowed to use XP as well. Windows 7 is still slated for an October release, so it will be interesting to see how Windows 7 fares when XP is still going strong. The people who have tested the beta version of Windows 7 have been pretty pleased with the performance, as Microsoft learns from their Vista mistakes.

While I like XP very much, it’s sad to see Microsoft clinging so tightly to such an old OS. They are spending lots of money on advertising, praising Vista and Windows, and bashing Mac, but they are still sticking to XP. If this rumor proves to be true, one day Microsoft really needs to man up and stop XP and go with their new OSs and show they are making significant progress.

1. Internet/Network video on your TV

If you’ve got a PC that is only a couple of years old, then there’s a good chance you could hook that PC to your television. Grab a copy of Boxee for Linux or Mac OS now or try to get into the Windows alpha.

You’ll have a ten foot interface for Internet video in no time. Also, just because Hulu’s bosses have ripped Hulu away from Boxee, you can always just watch the videos via a regular browser. Hulu has made it difficult to watch content on your TV, but not impossible.

If you’ve already got videos, music, or pictures on your network, XBMC is a nice alternative to Boxee. XBMC Media Center is an application you could pick up for free for any OS.

Links: [Boxee] and [XBMC]

2. In-house Media Server

This might be one of the easiest and most useful thing you can do with an old PC. Odds are you’ve got a couple of DVDs sitting around. Why not create back ups that you can watch and access from any machine on your network? If you’re going to do this, definitely hardwire this computer to your network.

Grab a copy of Handbrake and rip your DVDs. If you’re somewhat impatient, you can just rip the media on your faster machine and then transfer the files over the network to your server. I’m suggesting Handbrake over other DVD-ripping tools because it makes a more portable version of the video file that you can take with you on your laptop or phone.

Link: [Handbrake]

3. Emulator central

The hardware on the original video game consoles pales in comparison to modern computers. You should be able to run lots of systems easily even on older machines. NES, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, and lots of MAME games should work well. Grab a live CD and play some Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!

4. OS surfing

Windows XP is good and pretty stable. Change is good. Why not try some other operating systems? Try out any number of Linux distributions. If your computer was built in the last few years, most Linux distros will be able to handle your hardware with few problems. Maybe if you build that server, you could just use something like FreeNAS and just make that old PC a big network storage device.

5. Take it apart

If you’ve never messed with your computer’s guts, why not try it with a machine you don’t care about? For the most part, these skills transfer to newer computers. Ports may change, but the gist is the same. Take out a hard drive, a PCI card, and maybe some RAM. You’ll find it’s a lot easier to take a part a desktop than you originally thought.

Section: Video, Video Providers, Computers, Desktops, Mobile Computers, Peripherals, Web

And the cards keep tumbling down. It’s not like we didn’t all see this one coming. After all, three other companies have already admitted they were less than legal when it came to fixing prices for LCD panels sold to U.S. companies Today marks Hitachi Displays Ltd. joining the ranks of those companies charged with conspiring to fix prices, making it four companies and seven individuals charged by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Anti-Trust Division.

A plea agreement just waiting for court approval maintains that Hitachi Displays did agree to cooperate with the Justice Department’s continuing antitrust investigation. Good move guys. According to Scott Hammond, Acting Assistant Attorney in charge of the Anti-Trust Division,

“Hitachi joins three other multinational companies who have admitted to their involvement in fixing prices for LCD panels sold to U.S. companies and that have already paid criminal fines totaling more than $585 million. This case should send a strong message to multinational companies operating in the United States that when it comes to enforcing the U.S. antitrust laws we mean business.”

Hitachi’s share of that $585 million is $31 million, not so big considering it is one of only four hit with the rap. They were nabbed for their role in the conspiracy to fix prices in sales of Thin Film Transistor-Liquid Crystal Display panels (TFT-LCD) that were sold to Dell.

They are charged with the following: Carrying out this conspiracy through several means including taking part in bilateral meetings and communications with Japan, Korea and the U.S. to talk about the prices of the TFT-LCDs being sold to Dell; making an agreement of price during those meetings; issuing price quotes based on the agreements met at the meetings; and exchanging information on sales of the product sold to Dell, with the purpose of keeping track of and enforcing the set price they agreed upon. Naughty-naughty boys.

The other companies already on the naughty list? LG pleaded guilty December 15, 2008. They were rocked the hardest of the four fine-wise—a whopping $400 million criminal fine for a worldwide conspiracy charge. This is the second-largest in Anti-Trust Division history. Way to make mom proud guys! Also on the list is Sharp Corp, pleading guilty the day after LG. At least they were only slimy enough to fix prices sold to Dell, Apple, and Motorola…not the whole world. Third up was Chunghwa Picture Tubes, also guilty of the same worldwide conspiracy as LG.

According to the US Dept of Justice website, “Anyone with information concerning illegal conduct in the TFT-LCD industry is urged to call the San Francisco Field Office of the Antitrust Division at 415-436-6660.”

Section: Computers, Desktops

Asus has added another model into their Eee Box lineup, this time its home theater capable B208. Overall, I would not say this is a powerhouse, but due to the small size, both in terms of the keyboard, mouse, and the actual PC, plus the addition of a remote this would make a nice addition to a home theater setup.

As far as the PC, it features a 1.6GHz Intel Atom 330 processor with an ATI Radeon HD 4350 graphics card that has 256MB of memory and an HDMI output. Additionally, the B208 includes 1GB of RAM, either a 160, 250 or 320GB hard drive, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Ethernet, four USB ports and a built-in card reader. The B208 also features a built-in battery that functions as a power supply should you loss power in your home.

The Eee Box B208 will allow for a choice of either Windows Vista Home Basic or Windows Vista Business. Both also have Windows Media Center capability. Sadly the one piece that really would have added some benefit is the inclusion of a built-in TV tuner. Oh well, maybe in a future version they will add one. In the meantime there are always external options available.

Section: Computers, Desktops, Netbooks, Trade Shows, CeBIT

I’m starting to think maybe Gadgetell should get into the netbook business. Why not? It seems everyone else is doing it. Granted, all those companies have experience in manufacturing computers or components prior to getting into the netbook arena, but it can’t be that hard. Just get some Intel Atom chips, some motherboards, a bunch of 1 GB RAM sticks, throw in a small 1.8” HDD or SSD and put it all in a 10” screen-sized shell. Or we could just leave that to OCZ, the memory manufacturer who just announced it’s releasing a netbook with up to 250GB HDD or SSD, which is actually a bit impressive.

The real news with OCZ at CeBIT isn’t its new Ubuntu or XP LED backlit “Neutrino” netbook, it’s actually its 1TB SSD. Before you get too excited, you should know that OCZ isn’t ready to talk anything about release or pricing for the drive yet. But, there’s no reason to drool over the specs of the thing. The SSD is called the Z drive, and connects via PCIe with a hardware based RAID controller and 256 local cache. Oh yeah, it also has a read speed of 600Mbps and a write speed of 500Mbps. So yeah, pretty fast for a 1TB SSD.

The reason why OCZ is just showing it off at the moment is because the company is trying to find a way to cool the drive. I suppose it runs too hot to be used normally, and requires an entirely different way of cooling, or it just needs to be tweaked a bit. Either way, a 1TB SSD? Sign me up for that.

There are very few industries that aren’t being affected by the global recession, one of them being the netbook industry. Since netbooks are thriving in the market and are only going to become more popular, PC sales have begun to drop off and the worst has yet to come predicts Gartner analysts.

Overall, PC sales could potentially fall by 12 percent to 257 million units. In fact, the only other time PC sales were down was in 2001, when shipments only decreased by 3.2 percent. Seven years later, here we are amidst a terrible recession where PC sales have declined four times as much as the last drop-off. People have begun to take better care of their PCs, hoping that they can stretch the lifetime of their machines without having to spend a lot of money each year for a new system. In addition, Gartner predicts desktop sales will decline by nearly 32% in 2010. However, they are somewhat optimistic as they expect laptop sales to rise by 9%.

Recently, HP announced a 19% loss in terms of PC sales, Dell reported an astounding 27% decline in desktop sales and a 17% drop in laptop shipments. Other companies such as Intel, Western Digital, and Nvidia have also reported losses.

Now, the reason laptops are still doing well is due to the emergence of the netbook. People like compact systems with simplistic designs, that doesn’t sacrifice quality - something the netbook offers. As netbooks become more popular, laptops remain popular as well. Gartner goes on to say that netbook sales should double from 11.7 million shipped last year to 21 million shipped this year.

Personally, I enjoy using a desktop over a laptop, just because I don’t like how laptops/netbooks are all cramped up. That being said, if the economy was in better shape, I might consider investing in a netbook because of their portability. Only time will tell if Gartner’s predictions are correct. For the sake of companies who specializes in PCs and desktops, I hope Gartner is wrong.
