Described by the company as “major technology”, the ZAGG box is the culmination of 6 years and $35 million. At this point, it seems tough to classify exactly what this thing does: it is a media aggregator, will record, store and stream your media in multiple formats so you can watch on TV or on your iPhone (or other mobile device), and don’t forget home automation: it can hook into your HVAC, lighting or even door locks and control them. Good luck figuring out what aisle to put this thing in at Best Buy.

“We are introducing a game-changing technology with the ZAGGbox which will appeal to everyone from geeks to grandmas,” said Brian Packer, VP of Marketing of ZAGG. “It is a very powerful system, and very simple to use.”

The ZAGG dream machine is said to cost “under $999” and should be formally launched in January 2010 shipping late Q1. The unit was announced a finalist in the I-Stage event put on by the CEA, (Producers of Consumer Electronics Show -CES).

Roku has officially added to their lineup of set-top boxes, which means they are now offering the Roku SD, Roku HD and the Roku HD-XR.

To begin with, all three models still stream Netflix like we have to come to expect in the past. Additionally, they all still offer both wired and wireless connectivity.

Basically, the previous model, which also used to be the only model has been given a price cut and is now $79.99. Of course if you are looking for a little more then you can step up to the Roku HD. The additional features on the HD include an optical audio output, an HDMI connector and as you can see from the name—the ability to play HD content. The Roku HD is selling for $99.99.

Moving on, we also have the Roku HD-XR, which similar to the HD model offers the optical audio output, HDMI and ability to play HD content. However the HD-XR also offers a little bump in Wi-Fi connectivity which includes Wireless-N. The other models (the HD and SD) do offer Wi-Fi but not the Wireless-N speed. In terms of price the Roku HD-XR is $129.99.

One other yet unused feature worth mentioning on the Roku HD-XR is the USB port, which is currently located on the back of the box, but simply noted as being “for future use” in the press release.

Finally, Roku has also announced the Roku Channel Store, which will allow customers to pick and enable new content channels on their device. So far the Channel Store is not yet active though, instead it will be available “later this fall.”

Section: Video, Content, DVD/DVR/Blu-ray

It seems that Netflix is determined to be everywhere, we have seen dedicated players such as the Roku set top box, we have seen it integrated into television sets and even Blu-ray players. That said, the Blu-ray players, despite being a nice option have not yet offered the most cost effective route. That is, until now, well in all fairness it may not be the most cost effective yet, but the prices are getting better thanks to the recent deal from Netflix, Insignia and Best Buy.

Anyway, the official announcement has come and Best Buy is adding Netflix streaming to its Insignia line of Blu-ray players. What we have is two available options which include the NS-BRDVD3 for $179.99 and the NS-WBRDVD for $249.99. The main difference between the two players is the addition of Wi-Fi in the model for $249.99.

With that, current or future owners of either player will be able to begin streaming Netflix movies—that is right after they perform the necessary firmware update that offers the ability.

Section: Video, Content, DVD/DVR/Blu-ray, HDTV, Portable Video, Video Providers

What if you could make sure your movie purchases would work tomorrow, on any device, and you could lose worries of scratching a disc? That is the idea behind Disney’s Keychest, a new way to future-proof your media purchases and instantly access your media on any device that is supported. Could the DVD finally go the way of the Dodo?

According to a Wall Street Journal article this morning, media rights could be redefined as no physical possession will be involved. The media would live in the cloud and be available on-demand in a way similar to the way Google Docs are accessed. Users would simply enter their unique key and begin streaming their media.

Disney hopes to charge a little bit more for the convenience and security of keeping your media in the cloud and accessing it in a myriad of places. As DVD sales have fallen, industry players seek new ways to make the register ring. Disney says other players in the market have signed on to their service, but are not naming names.

Sony, as Sony tends to do, is backing a competing plan, the DECE or Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (catchy, right?). Predictably, DECE wants to initiate new formats and new standards while Keychest relies on current formats that are already supported by many devices. With Steve Jobs involvement with both Apple and Disney, we can safely bet the iPhone will be one of these devices.

One cool aspect of Keychest is no matter what service you bought the media from, the information is shared with Keychest members (say the cable company, movie studio, or ISP) so you only purchase it once. No word when either service, DECE or Keychest will be launched.

Are we headed for yet another battle similar to VHS versus Beta or DVD-HD versus Blu-ray? In short, “yup.”

Although so many people get movies streamed right to them a host of different ways, occasionally, some do still venture forth into that old brick and mortar building called a video store. So, there you are, it’s a Friday night and you go to your local Blockbuster, grab a movie, dreams of relaxing with some popcorn and the latest “must see” dancing in your head. Run home, pop it in your laptop to watch, and that’s when all hell breaks loose.

“The Proposal” by Sony starts it all off

Well, at least it did for me this past weekend after renting the new release “The Proposal”, distributed by Buena Vista, a division of Sony. When I first popped the DVD into my drive, it sounded like it was having a bit of a hard time reading the disk. I initially thought that the disk might have been dirty or scratched, but after removing and checking it, I could see it was fine.

After several more attempts to play the DVD, I was about to give up when all of a sudden, I got a pop-up from one of my anti-virus programs (Kaspersky) telling me that the disk was attempting to play as a document file. What the heck? Then, the video did start playing, sort of. I could hear it, although the sound was going in slow motion, and there was no video playing. I once again ejected the DVD, and that’s when I saw we’ve got problems.

The Rootkit begins to do its thing on my system

First, my computer locked up. I did a hard boot, and when it logged back in, I didn’t hear that familiar little “Windows chime.” Uh-oh. I went to my desktop and immediately boxes were popping up like mad telling me all kinds of programs are failing to respond. Everything from Firefox to Yahoo Messenger to explorer.exe. It looked like some kind of “you’re really screwed” video game going off, where you had to figure out in seconds what to do with all the things flying at you before you see what happens next.

The system mess continues

What happened next wasn’t any prettier. I could not access my control panel, my start button, and any of my anti-virus programs on the desktop just wouldn’t launch. The only thing vaguely reassuring at that point, was that somehow, Kaspersky was still running, and I was able to click on it in my toolbar, and have it perform a scan.

Although nothing came up in the system scan, when I had it check for vulnerabilities, it named everything and its brother that is on my system. Then, it showed me where it all began. Which drive, what time. Yep, the Buena Vista movie I attempted to play “The Proposal.” It showed as containing several keyloggers and a rootkit. Just great. Now what?

Now, to add to the fun, my computer would not do anything in regular mode, so I went into safe mode to see what I could do. Pretty much the same nothing. I had never before come across any virus or malware that so thoroughly disabled and messed up my system. Right then, I was good and ticked at both Blockbuster and Sony. Heck, I was even mad at Sandra Bullock for starring in the stupid movie.

Rootkit removal tools

After downloading a number of rootkit removal tools, I tried to access the files on my laptop. Through a weird quirk, I was able to get into Microsoft Word and drag a copy of the removal tools to my desktop. From the desktop, I was able to run the programs. Even after running the rootkit removal tools, my system was still affected. After a system restore and malware scans, it looked like smooth sailing except for the lack of internet connection.

After a while, I realized that somehow, the stupid thing simply managed to turn off the wireless connection on my laptop. This was probably the easiest fix I dealt with through the whole fiasco. I just had to hit the reset button on my laptop for wireless internet connection.

Sidenote for Acer Aspire owners

I just had to hit the reset button on my laptop for wireless internet connection. For anyone who runs into this problem and you don’t know where that is, it is usually a small button on the front of the laptop. In my case, using an Acer Aspire, the reset button for wireless connection is at the top of your keyboard, under the on/off button. You will see a row of keys. The internet connection key is the one on the far left.

The Bottom Line

Be very, very careful what movies you are putting into your computer. If it’s distributed by Sony/Buena Vista, I would strongly urge you to think twice before doing so. Unless you consider hours of trying to bring your computer back to life more fun than the relaxing with a movie you were initially looking forward to that is.

Just announced at a consortium, some of the biggest players in the tech field are coming together to form an alliance to bring Wi-Fi connectivity to the public without all the hassle so often encountered now. Intel, Apple, Cisco Systems and over 300 other tech companies are all joining up to develop and distribute technology that will turn just about any gadget into an access point that can connect with any other Wi-Fi enabled gadget within around 300 feet.

Just think—phones, computers, gaming systems, TVs - all able to communicate together. If you happen to own an existing Wi-Fi enabled device, you will still be able to make use of the new Direct technology by simply downloading some software.

This is what is probably going to make the Bluetooth folks a little nervous. Now they finally have some competition and while Wi-Fi can go through your battery life more quickly than Bluetooth tends to, it has its upside in speed and a richer multimedia content.

Beyond the obvious use on cellphones, TVs implementing it are probably going to become commonplace. Chipmaker Marvell is already in pow-wows with TV makers. Although not many offer this technology currently, several are now thinking about adding the feature so that users can do things like transferring video and photos right onto their TV screens from cameras, camcorders and laptops.

What is also cool when you think about this technology is the fact there are so many ways it is going to be able to be used. We hear that the technology is supposed to be able to connect both one-on-one and in a group and will come with built in WPA2 technology to keep those nasties at bay.

Set to launch sometime mid-2010, this is something I’m definitely looking forward to seeing come to play.

It seems like no set top box is safe from getting Internet video options lately. Amazon, Blockbuster and Netflix have been hard at work to get their respective video stores on as many boxes as possible. We’ve seen a number of companies add the functionality through new hardware and firmware updates, and now we can add Samsung to that list of companies.

Samsung is now rolling out firmware updates to Blu-Ray players and Internet@TV displays that will feature two of the three major video services. Blockbuster On Demand and Amazon will now be available through the updates, allowing users two more ways to get movies and TV shows instantly. However, only Amazon video actually supports HD content, so it will probably be more preferable. To bring Blockbuster back in, however, Samsung Blu-ray players will now be available at Blockbuster stores, which, assuming people still use the store, should hopefully bring in a few sales.

With all these companies adding all these services, eventually it seems we’ll all have a large number of boxes that support Internet video. Not even just the boxes, but also HDTVs. Soon there will be no excuse to not at least know of movie streaming services, if you don’t already use them. Having a wide range of products that have the features is nice, but it can also become confusing and annoying. Different services could have different stream qualities for specific content, and some devices could produce better video or audio assuming the user has no home theater surround sound setup. Surely consumers will be able to figure it out, but for now, do we really need to have Netflix, Blockbuster and Amazon on every box that connects to a TV?

You’d have to be blind not to see Microsoft trying to shove Windows 7 into the living rooms of America through TV commercials. The most recent—the gaggy sweet little girl making rainbow and flower pages though, is in my opinion, not their best effort. But, that effort is now veering in a new direction with their latest venture. Microsoft has just signed a deal with Fox to sponsor a show produced by “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane.

And get this, the show isn’t even going to have any commercials! That’s because it is kind of one big long commercial in itself. It is going to be a plethora of Windows programming throughout the show. The title is “Family Guy Presents: Seth & Alex’s Almost Live Comedy Show,” and will be a mix-up mashup of animated shorts, live-action “Family Guy” musical performances, as well as celebrity guest appearances.

No one would talk about the specifics of how they are gonna slip Windows 7 in throughout the show, but we are told it is going to be well integrated into the content. According to general manager of consumer engagement and advertising at Microsoft, Gayle Troberman, “You’ll see us deeply integrated into the content ... you’ll hear a lot about how Windows 7 can help you simplify your PC—it’s simple, fast and easy to use,” She continued by saying, “Think about metaphors and examples we might use, talking about how simple things are. We’ll be evoking the cast of ‘Family Guy’ in some interesting ways that integrate the product messages.” Hmmm….maybe stressing it is so easy to use, even a bright bulb like the family guy can use it.

Troberman maintains that branded entertainment with content integration and programming offered up “phenomenal results” when they used it for launching the search engine Bing. She says that is why they are going that route for Windows 7 as well. “Consumers exposed to both branded entertainment and advertising have more positive reactions,” she said. But, working in to use an OS isn’t quite as simple as promoting a candy bar, or even a search engine. I’m curious to see just how they manage to do it. The show is scheduled to air on November 8 at 8:30 PM Eastern.

Now, here is what we can expect feature wise:

Plays up content up to 1080p

eSATA, Ethernet, and USB inputs

Composite and HDMI outputs

Bitstream or Dolby Digital and DTS Surround audio

Additionally, it seems to have a wide variety of supported file types including MPEG1/2/4, RM/RMVB, VC-1 and H.264 for video as well as MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG, FLAC and AIFF for audio. The O!Play is also able to stream and view JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF, TIFF image files.

Otherwise, the unit ships with a remote control and a set of composite cables. The one drawback here, aside from not having a HDMI cable included, is that the O!Play does not have built-in Wi-Fi. Of course, getting back to that price, $99, that is not all that surprising. It seems to be a nice option for those looking to not spend a ton of money.

Eventually we want to be on all the game consoles, all the Blu-ray players, all the Internet TVs. So we are working in parallel with all of those efforts. Currently our Xbox deal is exclusive and we haven’t characterized it more than that.

As we all know, exclusivity deals eventually must come to an end. One day the iPhone will be on other carriers and Netflix will hit those other video game consoles. Hastings comments shouldn’t be taken lightly. Netflix has made many moves that a larger company would be afraid to try. Their partnership with Roku initially defined the Roku media player. Its deals with content providers to get streaming content are growing. Expect the Nintendo Wii to land Netflix before Sony as Microsoft sees Sony as its number one competitor.

FLO TV aims to bring television to more places like your phone and your car. Sure, there are ways to get prerecorded programming on a portable device, but this is live television. FLO TV partnered up with Audiovox to bring live TV to the automobile. Gadgetell got to take a look at the FLO TV interface on both a phone and in the car; you can, too, if you watch the video.

The interface was quite snappy and very familiar if you’ve ever used a modern channel guide on cable or satellite. Television programming continues to play in the upper right corner as you call up a channel guide. You also have the option of flipping through channels normally. For the automobile version there are both wired and wireless remotes, although they did not have any of the wireless variety on hand. There was approximately a 1-2 second delay between changing channels, but nothing out of the ordinary when compared to cable television. Playback was smooth and not choppy. FLO TV video is best suited to the small screen as it is relatively low resolution. A representative for FLO TV said that they aim to supplement cable and satellite, not replace them.

Bad news: MPAA wants to break your TV to do it." width="240" height="160" align="right"/>Since June 2008, the Motion Picture Association of America (“MPAA”) has moved forward with a petition to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for the right to use selectable output control (SOC). This practice involves disabling the analog or digital portions of a video stream to the consumer. The MPAA claims using SOC would allow them to offer pre-DVD releases direct to the consumer while still protecting its copyright.

The problem is that the SOC could leave some current home entertainment technology disabled, particularly those that don’t have digital inputs. Estimates of just how many households would be affected range from 11 to 20 million. Right now, the MPAA is taking up the issue of these estimates with the FCC. It argues that there is a lack of a verifiable source for the estimate and that it is overinclusive of households that own both older and newer TV sets.

3D TV is coming. At IFA in Germany, Sony’s Sir Howard Stringer will throw down the gauntlet and announce next year we’ll see 3D TVs from the company. Sony could use a big hit and bringing the hardware is an important step as content and distribution look to figured out.

Sony is expected to make the announcement today, according to Financial Times, who almost never get it wrong. Not only that, the cheeky bunch at FT are quoting the future Stringer, as if they’ve found some time/space portal, sweet. Not only will the Bravia TVs adopt 3D but so will Vaio laptops and PS3. A whole wave of Sony products will feature 3D technology.

But, but, but

Two big obstacles stand in 3Ds way: standards and customers. Are we headed for another battle of format standards? Perhaps, as there is currently no standard for 3D. Hynduai, LG, Samsung, Phillips, Mitsubishi, and Panasonic all have 3D TVs in their sights as well. Sony is using electronic glasses that shutter to create the effect.

As for customers, blind faith that TV makers can force a new technology to make up for flat-lining big screen HDTVs with 3D is hopeful at best. You thought searching for the remote control was frustrating, wait until you have to search for four pairs of glasses, too.

While sports nuts are probably an easy sell, it isn’t clear that 3D in the home is going to be a winner. 24/7 Wall Street says, “Sony may find out the hard way that ‘2D’ video is just fine.” Will the market take to 3D?

Section: Video, Accessories, Content, Gadgets / Other, Household

.

Ever wanted to sidle up alongside Rambo in ‘Nam? Maybe you wanted to be part of the Goonie gang and add your own truffle shuffle? Perhaps your gaming skills could help fight the Kodan Armada? Whatever your cause, the Yoostar can make it happen.

Yoostar is a “studio grade” webcam (their description, not mine - I didn’t even know studios use webcams), portable green screen with a stand, and a remote control. It works like this: Step 1: search for and purchase scenes from the Yoostar website. Scenes cost $2.99 each and users can choose from movies and television shows as well as just backgrounds and commercials. The selection isn’t huge but there are some pretty interesting choices from Eddie Murphy’s “Coming to America” to Charlie Sheen’s “Major League” to Stalone’s “Rocky III.” The company says there are hundreds of choices and does take suggested movies you’d like to see added.

Here’s a scene uploaded to the site:

Yoostar users need to choose a role in the scene they’ve purchased and then it is time to shoot. Once users are finished, they can upload to the Yoostar site where links can be sent via Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.

According to the FAQs, you can’t do a lot with your recorded performance besides upload it to their site. Those hoping to add special effects via other video editing programs are out of luck. People hoping to download the video to other computers or portable video players will be disappointed, because Yoostar does not let you do that either.

Yoostar is $169.99 and is available now and comes stock with 12 scenes.

Section: Video, Content, Portable Video, Video Providers, Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Online Music/Video

Blockbuster and Motorola have recently announced a partnership that will allow users to stream OnDemand movies to their phones. The details are pretty light, however it was noted that the streaming will come in the form of a Blockbuster OnDemand application that will be made available for select Motorola phones.

“Through the agreement select Motorola phones will feature an exclusive BLOCKBUSTER OnDemand application, providing on-the-go download access to Blockbuster’s digital library of thousands of current BLOCKBUSTER OnDemand movies.”

Even with the lack of any real details, this does sound good. It would also appear to be a move that could help place Blockbuster back in the game, that is, at least in terms of competing with Netflix. Of course, the press release announcement did leave out some of the important details such as pricing, and we all know that could make or break a service. Not to mention the press release also gave little indication of which phones will be supported or when the service will go live.

This sounds like a service that could have some real potential, but I will have to reserve judgment until we see more details. If nothing else, it could hopefully spur some competition in the market and force Netflix to consider a similar partnership with a mobile company.

Section: Video, Content, DVD/DVR/Blu-ray, Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Gadgets / Other

i.TV is an app in the App Store that deals with all television media. The app has tons of features as it can tell you which programs are on when, rate programs and obtain reviews. i.TV lets you check out local movies, purchase tickets, has YouTube support and even has the ability manage your Netflix queque. All of these functions right from your iPhone or iPod touch is pretty enticing, especially considering that it is all for free. Today, i.TV is looking to take that one step further with the 2.0 version of the app which features a Remote Control Framework.

Using this framework, i.TV is looking to develop partnerships with various TV and DVR companies in order to create a universal remote control. For example, they have already partnered up with TiVo hoping to allow users to control their TiVo HD or TiVo HD XL via iPhone. Basically, you can change the channel, fast forward the show, record whatever you are watching or what you want to watch, and have the ability to play the content you have stored.

I don’t know about you, but I lose my remote control a lot more than I lose my cell phone, so having the ability to use my cell phone to change the channel and perform all these other functions could definitely be pretty useful. Connectivity between the iPhone and the TiVo is made possible by Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or a dock.

Possibly to appease Apple to approve their 2.0 app, i.TV has added the ability to purchase content from iTunes that is related to the show(s) you want to watch. In addition, using the 3.0 software’s push notifications, the i.TV app can let you know when a new show is about to air even when the app is closed, ensuring you will never miss your favorite show again.

The app is supposed to be approved by Apple sometime this month and then it will become available to download for free. The concept of the iPhone acting as a remote control is definitely an interesting one. Why waste money to buy a universal remote control such as a Logitech Harmony remote control when you can simply download an app on your already-paid-for iPhone? It will be interesting to see in the future if i.TV partners up with any other company to create the necessary codes for compatibility with TVs and DVRs other than TiVo. i.TV has the Remote Control Framework already laid out, they are just looking for additional partners.

First things first though, in order to watch the MLB content, you will need to be subscribed to MLB.TV’s premium package. Otherwise, this is going to be rolled out by way of a software update over the next few days, but just in case you are feeling a little impatient you can always go to Settings > Player Info > Check for Update to get it a little quicker.

In terms of what will be available, subscribers will be able to “watch local market or other nationally televised games approximately 90 minutes after they end.” Just in case you were not able to catch that game right away, you will also be able to view it up to seven days later by way of an on-demand feature.

All things considered, this little $99 set-top box is becoming a pretty good deal. Especially considering its ease of set-up and use thanks in part to having both a wired Ethernet connection as well as a wireless connection available.

Users of TiVo Series 3, TiVo HD, and TiVo HDXL can watch the videos instantly or sign up for a Season Pass just like you would for a television show. You can search for TiVo podcast channels and individual podcast episodes via TiVo Search. If you can’t find the podcast you want to watch, you can enter its URL in TiVo’s “Video on Demand” menu.

TiVo’s move into video podcasts shows that not only is the podcast medium gaining in popularity, bu TiVo’s role in the home entertainment lineup is changing. TiVo has become much more than a DVR - it is starting to behave like the computer it is, all the while easing the average consumer deeper into the world of online video content.

Both YouTube and probably Google Video should receive video upgrades with the help of On2 Technologies. Back in 2007, YouTube attempted to improve video quality by making sure all videos were encoded in H.264, which served two purposes. One to improve video quality and to please the iPhone community, which has native support for H.264. With other video sites proving to be fierce competition such as Hulu, Vimeo, Metacafe, it’s about time YouTube looked to start improving general video quality. If they want to add full length movies and HD videos the overall quality of YouTube has to go up, and Google will probably address this issue shortly.

The union between Google and On2 Technologies is set to be officially approved in the Fall. Hopefully we can expect YouTube and Google Video quality alike to be much improved come the Fall and Winter.

Section: Video, Content, Video Providers

Instant streaming movies really seem to be the way everything is going. Blu-ray isn’t exactly the hottest selling format and an increasing number of players are also including streaming services for those who want to watch something right that moment rather than going to get the disc, or waiting for it to arrive. While many set top boxes currently have Netflix, Amazon is making agreements to expand its Video on Demand service. Netflix isn’t standing still, however, and is making its own agreements to get big name deals.

For Amazon, the announcement has come that it’s Video on Demand service is coming to all VIERA CAST Panasonic Blu-ray players. This not only includes the normal players that you attach to an HDTV, but also Panasonic’s portable player, the B15. The upgrade that includes Amazon Video on Demand is free for all users. Now all they’ll need is an Internet connection to access all of Amazon’s streaming content. VIERA CAST can also access YouTube, Picasa Web Albums, Bloomberg News, and weather, which means the addition of Amazon Video on Demand means more people will actually use it.

Not to be outdone in terms of big name deals, Netflix today announced a deal with ABC. The deal will put many of ABC’s TV shows on Netflix’s Watch Instantly service. The deal includes seasons four and five of “Desperate Housewives,” season five of “Grey’s Anatomy,” and seasons one and two of “Legend of the Seeker.” The biggest part of the deal is it also includes the first five seasons of “Lost.” With three of the most popular shows on TV in recent memory (sorry “Legend of the Seeker”), this is huge for Netflix. Now anyone with the one of the myriad Netflix-enabled devices can actually catch up on Lost if they’ve never watched it, or revisit their favorite episodes.

Blip frontman Mike Hudack, announced on the Blip.tv blog

” We’ve designed something new for this economy of plenty. We’ve designed a next-generation television network.”

What is Blip.tv exactly? The company basically runs a hosting service, workflow automation and an ad match-making service that matches up both large and small producers with advertisers allowing highly targeted advertisements. The company takes a cut in ad revenue. It is just that simple.

The news today is adding partners like TiVo, FIOS, and connected Sony TVs means a larger audience. The company holds soon the TV viewing we consume will be made by those with talent, not those who were able to “get a meeting.” Blip.tv’s plan is any content on any device and it is starting to gather steam. Blip.tv counts as its friends: YouTube, NBC, Sony, Roku, TubeMogul, Vimeo, TiVo, Boxee, AOL, MSN, Facebook, Miro, Apple, Twitter, and Verizon. Good company to keep.

Interestingly, also announced was NBC local service who will be broadcast on Blip.tv to get on boxes like Vimeo and Roku. How is that for some new age thinking? This is one company to check out and watch. No pun intended.

Delete! Delete! Delete! We’ve all wished at one time or another for some magic delete button in our lives. You know, like when you’ve said something incredibly embarrassing out loud that you thought you were just thinking to yourself. (Like, “Dang! Would I love to grab those *bleep*). Or, when you run really quick to the little mini-market down the street in your oldest sweats with the rip in the behind, and of course that hot guy/girl you’ve been mooning over for weeks comes in the door right behind you. Wouldn’t a delete or rewind button come in handy?

On the brand new internet series produced by NBC, the office geek “Stuart” (played by Tony Hale of “Arrested Development” and “Chuck”) finds himself in control of just such an item on his computer. Due to a mishap with Nestea (wonder how much Nestea paid for that?), and its “Liquid Awesomeness,” Stuart realizes that to his amazement his computer now has magical powers. It gives him the power to rewind time, read minds, move things, and become invisible. Man, I think I want to spill some Nestea on my computer if it does all of that to it! (Seriously, I wonder how many goobers are going to actually try just that.)

He uses these nifty new abilities in big part to play revenge games with his smarmy, know it all boss (played by Steve Howey). I’m sure he’ll find lots of use for some of the tricks with his female co-worker (Emy Coligado) that he apparently has a big old crush on as well.

Now, of course, whenever good ole Stu tries to “fix” things with his keyboard, he ends up creating even more problems for himself as a result. Where would the fun be otherwise?

The series, which is based on the Sundance short film “Ctrl Z”, is both written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Rob Kirbyson, produced by SXM, and is sponsored by Coca-Cola. It premieres today on NBC.com, Hulu.com, and USANetwork.com. Being online episodes, they are short, but definitely worth a watch. Heck, I’m kind of disappointed they didn’t make a regular primetime show out of this one.

You can also check out the ctrl site for info on the show, tidbits about the cast and characters, and some behind the scenes interviews.

It was only a matter of time before we saw the Internet infiltrate our television, and it looks like Verizon is ready to launch their new type of Widget/App store for FiOS subscribers. Verizon has been working with Facebook, Twitter, Veoh, Blip.tv, ESPN, and Dailymotion in order to bring the best of the web to the TV. All FiOS users will have access to these great services and Internet video via the new Widget Bazaar.

In terms of the Widget Bazaar, subscribers will have the ability to update Facebook statuses, view friends profiles, as well as pictures. For Twitter users, you have the ability to check out tweets pertaining to the program or movie you are currently watching. It isn’t simply Twitter on the television, Verizon wants to tailor Twitter to what you are currently watching. At this time, it is not possible to tweet from your television, but that should come to fruition in the future.

If you participate in ESPN’s Fantasy Football game, you have the ability to view real time Fantasy Football points and statistics, box scores, rosters, and additional player information. This is free of charge as long as you are a member with ESPN’s Fantasy program.

If you are a Home Media DVR subscriber, then you will be happy to know you have access to Internet video such as Blip.tv, Dailymotion, and Veoh. For those of us who like to amass a large video collection, you have the ability to view videos stored on your PC through your television. Both of these services are free of charge.

For additional app development, Verizon plans to release the SDK in order to allow open development of new widgets for FiOS subscribers. More developers will have the ability to reach a wider audience, not just mobile users, and make a profit. Verizon hopes to add more free and monetary apps to the Widget Bazaar.

Sony hasn’t done anything too earth-shattering on their own in the digital field lately, so this move at least shows they still want to stay in the game, even with rivals. And Netflix is certainly continuing to expand their market, little piece by little piece. No, this isn’t going to knock any major new numbers their way in terms of new subscribers, but when other services are streaming on a box, they want their name there as well. Previous deals for Netflix have included partners like Microsoft, TiVo, Samsung, LG, Vizio, and more.

The Sony Internet Link for their Bravia TVs first showed up as a $300 box. Ouch. Then it began being built into some of the later TVs. So, this fall, if you have a Bravia box, or an Internet-ready Bravia TV, and a Netflix account, you are good to go to stream any movie from the Netflix library. This does include HD movies by the way.

Guess who is missing from this brand spanking new Sony/Netflix partnership? The PS3. The reason being that Microsoft’s XBox 360 is still the exclusive loved-game-system of Netflix, although that romance surely won’t last in it’s monogamy forever. After that, I’d expect some courting to be going on with Sony and Nintendo. Well, we can always hope.

AT&T CruiseCast has a bunch of different channels including AccuWeather, Cartoon Network Mobile, Discovery, Disney, ESPN Mobile, and Lifetime. That is not the complete list, but you can see that CruiseCast has a variety of content partners that ought to keep any backseat passenger entertained for minutes.

ABC’s video player was always distinct from a lot of other network sites as it required you to watch an advertisement then click to continue watching your program. Now that ABC content is on Hulu, you can watch the video like any other Hulu video—passively.

The resolution tops out at 480p on Hulu, whereas higher quality HD video is available at ABC’s network site. If you want higher resolution video, hit the network site. If you want decent video without having to click to continue, Hulu’s now an option.

CEO and President of CEA, Gary Shapiro, had this to say about the remote DVR technology, “The ability to record television programming has become commonplace to millions of Americans which has benefited consumers and allowed the consumer technology and content industries to contribute billions of dollars to our economy and create millions of jobs.”

He goes on further to say that it doesn’t matter how you record shows, whether it be a box, or in an office. Another argument used by Shapiro is the fact that Apple and Google already offer similar services, so it makes sense that remote DVR technology such as this is allowed to prosper.

This always seemed like an odd case. Why would remote DVRs be illegal when regular DVRs were legal? If you had a very long cable between your hard drive and your set top box, that would be illegal? With the Supreme Court denying to review the lower court’s decision, expect more cable providers to start setting up remote DVR functionality. Just imagine never filling up your hard drive space on your DVR. Or just imagine the cable companies telling you that you get 5 hours of DVR space and for a fee you can get more space. Hmm…one of those options seems a lot more realistic than the other.

The full press release is below.

CEA APPLAUDS SUPREME COURT’S DECISION IN REMOTE DVR CASE
Decision is a Triumph for Home Recording and Common Sense
Arlington, Va., June 29, 2009 – The United States Supreme Court today denied the petition for a writ of certiorari upholding the legality of Cablevision’s remote digital video recorder (DVR). The technology is functionally identical to a home DVR, and allows viewers to record programs on a remote system within Cablevision’s offices. The following statement can be attributed to CEA President and CEO, Gary Shapiro.

“We applaud the U.S. Supreme Court today for letting stand a decision that supports the growth of technology and innovation. The ability to record television programming has become commonplace to millions of Americans which has benefited consumers and allowed the consumer technology and content industries to contribute billions of dollars to our economy and create millions of jobs.

“From a common-sense standpoint, the Court’s decision was a slam-dunk. The Court has already ruled that consumers have the right to time-shift television shows. Whether the bits reside in a box under your TV or a box in the cable field office is not relevant.

“CEA has been at the forefront of promoting digital technologies for decades. The ability to shift content among devices and products within the home is paramount in allowing technology to thrive and allowing companies to continue to design and develop new products.

“In addition, remote computing and data storage, like that allowed by the remote DVR, offers extraordinary benefits. Indeed Americans already enjoy this technology through services like Google applications and Mac. An adverse ruling would have hamstrung this exciting new area of innovation.
“We commend the Supreme Court for protecting our ability to innovate and ensure that America remains the world’s technology leader.”

About CEA:
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) is the preeminent trade association promoting growth in the $172 billion U.S. consumer electronics industry. More than 2,000 companies enjoy the benefits of CEA membership, including legislative advocacy, market research, technical training and education, industry promotion and the fostering of business and strategic relationships.
Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum! Ye makers of The Pirate Bay are apparently not planning to go sailing into waters unknown even amidst all the current legal fiascos they are facing. They are launching a new site called The Video Bay to be in competition with YouTube. No one ever said pirates were the meek sort.

Now, this little venture was apparently first started quite some time ago. As in, two years ago, but it seems they have decided to finally forge on. A few days ago, according to Slashdot, Peter Sunde appeared via Skype at the Open Video Conference in NY and said they were gearing up to launch something new. Of course at that point speculation ran rampant. What could it be?

Then, some changes appeared on TVB site. And the the site suddenly stated for a while,

“To stay in the spirit on which TPB was founded and using the Latest Technology, TVB aims to use the new HTML5 features, more specifically the video and audio tags with the ogg/theora video and audio formats. This site will be an experimental playground and as such subjected to both live and drunk (en)coding, so please don’t bug us too much if the site ain’t working properly.”

I went and tried to check out TVB, which is currently in the roughest of beta modes, but couldn’t get anywhere other than seeing that the home page did indeed exist. Apparently, this is a change from fairly recently, when the curious were able to tack random numbers on the end of the page URL to see movies that are on the page for beta-testers. Of course, even that process was pure hit or miss. You would, for example, be typing in a “21” after thevideobay.org/, without having any idea what movie might be showing up for you to view. This little trick is no longer working at time of writing. Now, when you do that, or click on any link, including the one to register, it asks you for your username and password.

So, when is it going to go live for the public? That’s anyone’s guess. Including The Video Bay. They told TorrentFreak that “there is still a lot of work to do behind the scenes. The encoder is not finished yet and the design is also a work in progress.” And, “it will be done when it’s done, in the future.”

One thing that should also be noted, they say they will not be implementing P2P technology to be streaming the videos. The site definitely has potential become a key player in the video streaming area. It’s going to be a site where users can share whatever - no censoring. I can see heads in the movie industry steaming already.

Section: Video, Content

So you have managed to not pay attention to any of the notices that today is the day that the digital transition is in full effect and old analog televisions cannot receive over-the-air signals without a converter box. What can you do if you’ve been affected? Well if you didn’t pay attention to all the news, then clearly you don’t care about television. So how about some suggestions what to do with all your free time?

Forget about new programming.

Just because your television doesn’t get video over-the-air doesn’t mean it can’t receive a signal any more. Attach a video game system, a DVD player, or maybe a Netflix player or something and you’ve still got content. Your television may not be able to get new content, but it doesn’t mean that your television is dead.

Read something.

Maybe you don’t even want to touch that television. Why not read something? If you want to feel high tech while reading, you could pick up an Amazon Kindle (check out our review here). High tech or low tech, you could revive that imagination of yours that has laid dormant since the days that you played with Legos.

Go outside.

A lot of these digital signals will have high definition video. The consumer electronics industry says that the next big thing is 3D. The video game manufacturers like Sony and Microsoft say that you can really enjoy the game if you can interact with them more naturally.

Here’s a crazy idea: Go outside and play a sport. The resolution is better than high definition. It’s already in 3D and you don’t need any special glasses unless you choose to wear them. Instead of calibrating a fancy camera based motion controller, calibrate your legs to kick a ball. No need for some fancy “motion plus whatever” to shoot a basket. Get a basketball.

Embrace change.

Sure these things may be scary and different, but change can be good. If you need that television fix, there’s always online video sites out there.

To heck with the high-tech problems associated with going through all the trouble of installing a card reader and hidden camera over an ATM to steal from Joe Public. These guys took the old-fashioned approach—brute force.

I can just hear it. “Hey Bubba. What say we go down into that big ole city over yonder and break us out some of them there money machines?” (Followed by a large belch and some scratching). It really doesn’t look like a whole lot of brain cells were put into use for this robbery.

First of all, I love how several of the guys didn’t even bother with masks. Next, you can tell they are just pleased as punch with themselves when they knocked down the wall around the second ATM. They stop and do a high-five. You might want to be worrying about hurrying there, guys. Next, talk about no high tech gadgets to assist in this crime. I think the most high tech part was they actually had a vehicle there to assist in the getaway and that had to have some electronics in it somewhere.

Way to go men. Hang that Rebel flag high.

It would seem that the rumors claiming that Hulu will be coming to the Roku set-tip box just will not go away. Personally, I can only hope this means they are true, however time will tell if that is going to happen.

Anyway, in the meantime, the latest chapter in this rumor comes from an unlikely source, a source that many claim to read “just for the articles.” Yup, you may have guess it—Playboy Magazine.

In the most recent issue there was an article titled; “Hack Your Life: Death to Cable” and in there it was mentioned that “Roku promises Hulu support is coming.”

What doe this mean for those waiting? Unfortunately, nothing really, we will still be waiting. Especially considering a PR rep for Roku commented that they are “not sure” where that line in the Playboy article came from. In other words, this is still just a rumor. Of course, that could just be a way to deflect the truth until they can make an official announcement.

Already, the new Microsoft Zune HD is looking pretty good, with its HD playback and all. At the E3 tradeshow today, Microsoft unveiled an announcement, which didn’t really come as a surprise but definitely got people excited for the latest Microsoft device. The Xbox 360 would be able stream movies and television shows using the Zune video service.

Within the new LIVE service, the Xbox 360 has the ability to stream various content in 1080p resolution as well as 5.1 surround sound. Of course, the video service has been revamped with the announcement of the Zune HD. Microsoft looks to utilize these two tools, combined with the vast popularity of the 360 to solidify their rank in MP3 players and gaming consoles. Until now, Xbox Live has only been available in eight countries, but it will be expanded to reach ten additional countries. In total, US, Canada, UK, France, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Spain, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. With the addition of other countries, Microsoft hopes that even more people will be able to use Xbox Live for not only playing multiplayer games, but also watching videos in HD.

Microsoft claims the video service streaming will start nearly instantly as it starts with a low bitrate and fast download speed, then it starts increasing bitrate to reach HD video. At E3 Microsoft announced a few other features such as Project Natal, Movie Party, as well as Facebook support. For all the latest E3 news, be sure to check out our sister site, Gamertell.com.

Section: Video, Content, DVD/DVR/Blu-ray

I wish I could say that this was a brand new offer from Amazon, but either way it was new to me, so it is likely to be new to others as well. In what may be a possible sign of the current economic times, Amazon is currently offering to trade your old DVDs, Blu-ray and HD DVD discs in for gift cards. Basically, all you need to do is choose what items you want to trade-in, then pack them for shipment (which is free) and sit back and wait for your gift card to hit your account.

There are a few rules that go along with the trade-in though. To begin with, the movies must be in what Amazon refers to as “good condition” which really just means that they need to be undamaged and in the original package including the cover art. Additionally, once you decide on the items you are going to trade-in and submit them to Amazon, you then have to have your shipment postmarked within 7 days. Of course, on the flip side, it only takes “2 business days” to have your gift card deposited in your Amazon.com account.

Finally, and I think this should most likely go without saying, but don’t expect to get full retail, or even close to it for your trade-ins. Just take The Ultimate Matrix Collection as an example, on Blu-ray you will get $27.50 and only $7.00 on DVD. Of course, even getting just a few bucks is still better than selling them at a garage sale.

Personally, this sounds great, especially considering I recently moved and discovered I had about a 100 movies that I had forgotten about and since learned that I can live without. Now I just have to pack them up and decide what to do with my new found Amazon gift cards.

Watch comedy on Hulu with no commercials" width="640" height="283" />

Every now and then Hulu goes commercial free. Today, Hulu’s comedy channel will be commercial free thanks to a deal with Toyota. Toyota is promoting its newest Prius. If you are unaware, Hulu has several different ways to watch programs and movies. You can do searches for video or use their channels. These channels make it easier to stumble upon videos based on genre since a search box can only get you so far.

Earlier this month, the entire Hulu site went commercial free with a deal from McDonald’s. I don’t think they have run this kind of promotion before where a particular genre was getting special treatment. Perhaps Hulu is showing off what it can do for potential advertisers by only limiting its services to one genre. Maybe we’ll see other products promoting a particular type of video—maybe some kind of antidepressant promoting dramas?

If you’re interested in that new Toyota Prius, the ad claims 50 miles per gallon. That’s not too shabby, but maybe Toyota could do something with that design so it’s not so ugly. The comedy channel will be commercial free for less than 12 more hours. Go watch some Internet TV.

What Hulu doesn’t get

Section: Video, Content, Web, Online Music/Video, Features, Originals

Hulu is one the best online video sites available in the United States. One of the weirdest things about the folks behind Hulu (NBC and News Corp.) is they seem to act in a way that counters their best interest. Put a show online? Take it down quickly! There’s software that lets people watch Hulu on televisions? We can’t have that!

Now why would Hulu act like this? You would think that more eyeballs watching shows on Hulu would be a good thing. Shouldn’t Hulu be on as many devices as possible? Let’s speculate on Hulu’s issue. Most everything comes down to money. If something is profitable, you can bet that everyone and their mother will try that something.

So where’s the money in Hulu? It has to be the advertising. The same as it is in the television business, the radio business, the magazine business, and so many others.

The people behind Hulu must want you to watch normal television over online television. It’s a pretty safe bet to imagine that they charge much more for television advertising than they do for online advertising.

Here’s the weirdness: if Hulu can show that they have millions and millions of people watching online, then they can raise their ad rates. By encouraging people to watch online, they will make more money.

To a lot of us, the technophiles, Hulu is pretty much television on demand. Having an online source for television means we don’t need to torrent anything or find multiple parts of a show on YouTube. Has anyone found a way to get around Hulu ads (apart from reloading the page until you get that big ad upfront)? I don’t think so. If anything, I think people remember the sponsors more on Hulu than they do on TV.

What will it take for Hulu to figure out the right thing to do? It took the television industry a while to get online, so let’s be patient with them.
