Wirelessly recharge your phone - sooner than you think

by JG Mason on Jun 12, 2007 at 10:41 PM

light bulbEver get stirred awake at 2am by your phone beeping low battery in the other room?  That is precisely the problem that started MIT scientists down the path to find a way to power things wirelessly.  Imagine, you put your phone down on the counter and it recharges or your iPod recharges on the coffee table.

MIT’s team came up with “Witricity” (wireless electricity) based on magnetic coupled resonance.

The team was able to light a 60 watt bulb from a distance of 2 meters away.  One small step for man… The premise (interpreted for you by a non-scientist) is like ocean waves.  Alone not to big a deal, but you get two with the same frequency and big things can happen.  Again, I am paraphrasing, but head over to Gizmag and read up on it.  Fascinating stuff.

This is how we will recharge our electric cars someday…
