WinMo6 for Blackjack, coming very soon?

by JG Mason on Aug 9, 2007 at 08:36 PM

blackjack upgradeSome of our European friends with the Samsung I-600 can upgrade their Windows Smartphones to version 6, how far can the US version I-607 be behind them?  In the span of two weeks, five more countries have been added to Samsung’s upgrade page which lacks a US flag (which makes sense as we have the I-607).  How far can we be behind?

The Euro version lacks Office applications and still relies on Picsel, Samsung’s capable view for Word and Excel files.  But it is only a viewer, not an editor.  Booo.  US users should not try to upgrade their Blackjacks to the Euro version as the radios are different, AT&T sagely removed WiFi so we wouldn’t hurt ourselves and we’ve not the front side camera for video conferencing.  Ah, to live in the “home of the free”.

So why upgrade if and when it does come out?  Enhanced graphics, faster loading times and better battery management seem to be the answers.  But without a US version to fully test, who knows?

A pre-release ROM was exposed from AT&T that was taken down in short order.  This ROM seemed awfully close to being ready for prime time lacking only support for alternate characters via extended button pushing.  The ROM could only be used on XP or Windows 2000 machines; not Vista.

Originally word on the street was after June with the word, “imminent” being used regarding the subject.  But like many things in the tech world, imminent means, “we’d like to get it out, but keep running into crap.”

So we wait.
