Windows Live Translator: still lost in translation
Windows Live Translator seems to be alive and kicking, well spluttering, across a number of beta sites at the moment:
- translator.live.com
- translate.live.com
- windowslivetranslator.com
- translator.start.com/
There is little information around and nothing official from Microsoft, but it is known that the translation software is from Systran and seems pretty accurate. Not all languages appear to be fully operational yet.
I am actually a fan and user of Systran as I use their widget on my Mac, but I will say that at best it is a good guideline. It takes a very literal translation, so it is pretty good on formal dialog for example, but comes up with some weird and wonderful ‘guesses’ at certain less formal words and phrases.
I have written about Windows Live before and was somewhat underwhelmed by the whole thing, and I have to say this leaves me in the same state of ambivalence. As for Windows Live pushing this as a new service, it just seems that yet again they are so far behind reality it is almost embarrassing.
