Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB portable hard driveAs HD movies become more abundant and files generally increase in size over time it becomes almost necessary to have ways to transport large files.  Portable external hard drives have been limited to 256GB and 500GB in memory size.  However, Western Digital announced the availability of a 750GB My Passport Essential portable hard drive and a 1TB version.

Western Digital highlights the usefulness of such drives as they can store photos, videos, music, documents, and miscellaneous files.  In addition, the drives are USB powered which means no power adapter to lug around.  People tend to use external hard drives as a means to store important data, it is necessary to have security measures and these drives can help with that.  For instance, the 750GB unit and the 1TB unit both feature 128-bit encryption technology, allowing peace of mind in case your hard drive ends up in the hands of others.

In terms of pricing and availability, both models are currently available in the States and from their online store.  The 1TB unit will be available for $299.99, and the 750GB model will sell for $199.99.  Personally, with an external hard drive, I don’t need it to be portable.  I purchased a 1 TB model last winter for only $99, and the prices have fallen since.  However, I’m sure if you travel a lot, a more portable external hard drive with high capacity is essential.
