Warner Bros. ponders Blu-ray exclusivity

Warner Bros Studios is considering supporting Blu-ray exclusively. Currently Warner Bros offers support for both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats, they are the last of the major studios to still offer support for both formats.

That may not be for long, Silverberg said. “One thing that may be changing is our strategy,” he said. “When both formats launched and hardware prices were high, we made a decision to support both formats and let the consumer decide. But now that hardware pricing is affordable for both Blu-ray and HD DVD, it appears consumers no longer want to decide — so the notion of staying in two formats for the duration is something we are re-evaluating now that we are in the fourth quarter.”

So while they have not made this decision official it seems they may soon be dropping the HD DVD support.

“We can definitely talk Blu-ray,” he said. “We are committed to the format.”

With the recent publicity for HD DVD thanks to the sub-$200 Toshiba player I suppose it was just a matter of time before we heard some news from the Blu-ray side. Is anyone else sick of the format war? At this point I just want to know that I will be able to play my movie a year from now.
