Vonage admits to working on smartphone apps, but only offers little detail
It would seem as if Vonage is preparing to release an app for one or possibly multiple smartphones. However, unfortunately at this time, the details are pretty much non-existent. That said, here is what we know so far. It started with a simple request on Twitter.
“@Vonage_Voice I would LOVE to have a Vonage SIP client for my iPhone.”
As a Vonage user myself, it is something that I had hoped for, but until yesterday I was not even aware that Vonage had an officia’ presence on Twitter. Nonetheless, Vonage_Voice, which is actually Michael from Vonage replied back with the good, but very limited news.
“Hey @thatchman1. We plan to offer mobile applications that will allow customers to use Vonage on their mobile smartphones. Stay tuned.”
Of course, as you would imagine, that response led to a flurry or questions back asking about details and such, but little other details were revealed aside from mentioning that the “first app will allow seamless dialing to international numbers at low rates using either cellular or Wi-Fi networks.”
Now it brings up the question as to which “mobile smartphones” will be included? It sounds logical that we will see one for the iPhone, but hopefully we will also see something for Android, webOS, Windows Mobile and more.

This is a great move from Vonage, others have offered mobile VoIP services since years. Operators like truphone have been first on most handset platforms to offer these services and now the incumbent players are all catching up. It is just a question of time before AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile will move next to offer similar services. Most likely this is the start of a consolidation in the market place. Being on the road with a WiFi enabled handset and checking into hotels with free or even paid for WiFi access (also they often can be used with Boingo) can be a seamless experience. My personal use case has been traveling between the US, Mexico and Canada. Roaming charges can be high and therefore an a app like truphone on my iPhone or Nokia WiFi enabled phone gives me an always reachable number and a high quality voice and instant messaging service. Having tested several service offering including skype I have concluded that truphone offers the best quality of service and pricing so far for calls to a PSTN and from truphone to truphone. While calling to PC’s can be best provided by Skype the offering between mobile is a very compelling use case. Being on the road a lot means usage of your mobile is high, unfortunately you are not always in WiFi. This is where truphone shines again with Call in Technologies allowing you to use a local SIM card to call into the network. None of the competing offerings seems to have adopted to this mode of calling. In my usage cases this is important. I have adopted a local SIM card in both Mexico and Canada but can still benefit calling via truphone using a GSM or 3G connection.
