Verizon beginning to send over-the-air firmware updates

Verizon has just begun offering over-the-air updates to phones. The service will alert customers when a firmware update is available allowing them to download it directly to their phone. On-screen prompts will walk the customer through the update process. The over-the-air service will be available on select models this year with more phones in 2008. Verizon is hoping this over-the-air service will help to cut down on service requests from customers that visit a retail store to have firmware updates performed.

While this seems very nice, it does make me wonder just how much the average cell phone user will care about or be able to perform the update without additional questions, giving that family geek one more tech item to repair, update or fix at family gatherings.
