The idea of netbooks can be pretty exciting; having a small form laptop that can go anywhere with hours of battery life sounds like a great idea. I never thought I would see a day where that becomes boring. With such a small market, it would make sense for companies to innovate something when they come into the netbook arena. Apparently, that is not the case. Toshiba just announced that they, too, will be releasing a netbook.
The specs? You’ve probably seen them before. 8.9” screen, 1.6 Ghz Intel Atom processor, up to 1GB RAM, up to 120GB HDD, webcam, etc. Toshiba wants to sell it for under $500. It will come with your choice of Ubuntu 8.04 or Windows XP. Anything here sound familiar? How about any of the offerings from Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, MSI, and Lenovo? They’ve all released netbooks with fairly similar specs to the new Toshiba and they probably serve as the inspiration for Toshiba’s entry.
There is an upside, though. Maybe if they all have almost the exact same machines the prices will go down a bit. I’ve had my eye on the Asus Eee PC 901 for quite some time, but $500 is a steep price. If enough people enter the market with the same machines but different shells someone has to differentiate themselves. That might come in packing in better components, improving battery life, or perhaps just lowering price. That would certainly make the netbook market more appealing to some.
