Sony’s booth at the Tokyo Game Show was bumpin’ this year with PSP and PS3 products and accessories.  One of the most exciting products at the event was Sony’s new PSP GPS receiver.  The GPS receiver has been talked about for a long time now, but this is the first time Sony has showed it off in public.  According to GameSpot,the add-on looked overall like a good addition to the PSP.

From what we saw, the PSP’s GPS unit seemed fairly portable. The receiver is extremely compact at less than two square inches (45mm x 41mm x 17mm), meaning it’s a little bigger than an average person’s thumb. Plus it supposedly only weighs 16 grams, which is about half an ounce (0.56oz).

Sony is planning on integrating the new GPS receiver’s funcitonality into several of their headline titles including Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Planetarium Creator Ohira Takayuki Kanshuu: Home Star Portable, Minna no Golf-jou, and Navigation Soft.  Home Star Portable sounds like a great idea.  It will let you display the stars that users should see in the sky based on their current location.  The GPS will also allow you to get driving directions via Edia‘s new navigation software, which is available in December (Japan only for the time being).

The Sony PSP GPS Receiver (PSP-290) will be available in Japan on December 7th for 6,000 yen ($51).  A US launch has not yet been announced, so we’re hoping it will make it over here.  The picture above is a mockup combining Sony’s press shot and Edia’s press shot.
