Time for Gadgetell’s “Who’s on Crack”: iPhone 3G edition

by JG Mason on Jul 11, 2008 at 04:33 PM

This is where we call out by names the actions and companies that seem odd, out of touch or just plain straight up smokin crack.  Technology is an odd realm where PR speak doesn’t hold a lot of water if the 1s and 0s don’t line up.  This week sees posturing, positioning and flat out insanity.  Here is what caught my eye this week:

Mr. Jobs “one more thing” this time is finish activation.  That smoke is not from some out of control wildfire in CA, oh no, it is from Cupertino’s servers sizzling like sizzlolean.  Yes, everywhere pandamonium hits from people buying a nice iPaperweight.  Yes, fanboys, raise that non-working iPhone 3G high into the sky with your date later tonight to sync it to iTunes for Mr. Jobs one more thing.

Apple saysiPod touch upgraders can take their $9.99 and move to the back of the bus, rumors indicate a check back time of 3am while we salvage our 3G launch, thank you very much.  Apple thinks that will cure ya, ya crack head.

App Store.  If I am being honest, kind of a let down.  I somehow hoped for more intellectually stimulating applications than what I can get at the AT&T Mall.  I guess that was me being on crack for believing I know nothing and Jobs knows everything and has more fun tricks than the cat in the hat.  However, I have hope (perhaps my own addiction speaking here), I believe the best apps are still to come.

Me.  Yep, my own little theory is something big is coming this September.  I keep hearing we’ll have more in September, all from App store developers.  WTF is happening in September?  iPod refresh no doubt and I’ll bet the Nano will be able to get Apps as well.  Oh yeah, whatever you actually do with crack, smoke/snort/inject - yeah, I am doing it all.

iPhone GPS.  Pogue says Apple says the radio is too weak.  TeleNav says we are bringing GPS navigation to iPhone but defers back to Apple when I asked them to comment on who is mistaken.  Come on?  Either Apple is off, Pogue made it up or TeleNav is just getting some iPhone press.  Crack is involved.  What is the real story?  One developer source says the GPS is plenty strong, so I am still in the dark.

And lastly, Appletell’s Josh Holat for keeping even the frickin shopping bag Apple used for the iPhone.  Flash forward 50 years and Josh is happily living in Florida, blankly staring into his air temp controlled display case as he tells his grandkids, “yep, I was there.”  A tear quietly streams down his face…  Seek some help Josh.

What did you see that makes you suspicious this week?

I am proud to be of this list. You have to admit those bags are pretty cool.
