Thunderbird 2 RC1; The holy grail of email?

by JG Mason on Apr 11, 2007 at 09:02 PM

Thunderbird LogoMozilla’s Thunderbird 2’s feature list won’t leave you with a “wow” moment, but might give you a reason to get off webmail.  The big improvements are:

  • Message Tags (ala Gmail labels, create all you like, even multiple tags per message)
  • Visual Themes (customization is fun!)
  • Session History Navigation
  • Advanced Folder Views
  • Easy Access to Popular Web Mail Services (read: Gmail users, we want you!)
  • Improved New Mail Notification Alerts

Clearly, Mozilla is eyeing Gmail users as setting up your account is as automated as possible, short of guessing your password.  Not a bad target to aim at.  My friends over at Lifehacker held a survey on what where its readers got their mail: 43% say webmail; 22% desktop and 33% that use both.  By combining things we love about Gmail, Thunderbird 2 could be the answer we all search for.

As a Mozilla Firefox lover, I am tempted to get off Gmail (it is a quirky bugger that I am still getting used to) and try this release.  You can do the same here but remember that it is only a release candidate.
