The DNA Archive: DNA for a rainy day

by Marjorie Dorfman on Dec 10, 2007 at 10:57 PM

DNA Kit

We’ve all heard about how important it is to save our money for that proverbial rainy day. But who ever would have thought that technology would bring us to the point when we can store our own genetic material? That day has come, even though you may not need that umbrella. Read on, if you dare.

DNA Direct, a San Francisco-based company, will probably foreclose many plots in future CSI television shows because now you can be around to prove or disprove anything even from the comfort of your own grave! If you are a customer of DNA Direct, a swab is used to take a DNA sample. The company then dries the genetic material and adds a synthetic stabilizer.

It’s all part of a kit, which includes three test tubes containing your genetic material. When samples are needed, they go through a simple process of re-hydration. Then they become strong enough to point a guilty or innocent sort-of finger at anyone who dares to get in your genetic way. They can be stored at room temperature and require no special treatment. If preserving DNA for personal and/or family medical history or any other reason is your thing, you can have it $175.00.
